- Altair PolarisRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am not generally into Dungeon litrpg (or really dungeon anything to be fair), but this one is entertaining. There was a nice slight of hand in the first chapter. If you are a fan of Terry Pratchett's Mort (I am), you will probably enjoy the humor here as well. I gave it a follow.
- Evelyn AdelbergRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This was such a fun read, and I can't wait for more chapters to be out!
We follow Rob, a truck driver turned zombie who inadvertently partners up with a sentient artefact. Said artefact allows him to build and control his very own dungeon. The catch? It's a "till death do them apart" arrangement.
This story goes deep down the hard-core dungeon building route. If you love building games ans classic turn-based RPGs, then you'll feel right at home. The unlock mechanic for rooms, minions, construction materials, etc makes a lot of sense, in a way that's deeply rooted in in-universe realism (in other words, Rob doesn't instantly unlock 'demon room lv.999' after defeating one goblin, but rather has to use resources on hand, and his own ingenuity, to optimise his dungeon). There's some architectural min-maxing going on, and I'm all here for it!
The pacing and progression in this story are both very smooth, and there isn't any filler/dull moments.
The style is what you'd expect from the Writathon. There are no major issues, but some sentences are lenghy or redundant. It's nothing distracting, and certainly nothing a second post-Writathon pass won't fix.
As for characters, unfortunately I just couldn't get to like Lilith. Although I understand where she is coming from, I found her abrasive personality a bit too much.
Being attached to Rob's head, she is on page quite a lot. But there's a lot of room for character growth, so perhaps a few arcs down the line she'll become more endearing.
She's not one dimensional for sure, as chapter 4 has shown us.
TLDR: a must read for those after realistic dungeon-building stories. - Stepan ChizhovRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0You know how it happens, you have some review swaps, shoutouts, and whatever. But you still want to read all the stories of all these good people. That was my mood when I started reading Master Dungeon.
But my attitude towards the book shifted really fast. The story is so engaging and entertaining that I definitely place it among my top favorite new books on RR, and I can't wait until I see new chapters!
The balance between descriptiveness, action, and humor is really good. I'd say it's almost perfect, but it would probably make this review look inflated.
What the hell, it is almost perfect. I want to see this project turned into an audiobook as soon as possible! ASAP!
The only rating that I placed lower than five is style. And there is a reason for that. Sometimes, there is some repetitiveness in the text. Both within the same paragraphs or in a wider context of a single chapter. But then, it's nothing that can't be fixed with just minor editing, and it doesn't really degrade the reading experience.
Thanks a lot for sharing this story with us, Ethan! I hope it rises high in the RR charts!
PS Ah, shifting POVs every third chapter may throw you off a bit. But I don't think it damages the narrative in any way. Just try to live with that :) - Mr_vissionlessRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Rob is one of these characters that has a feat no man could imagine. Riding truck-kun!!! But in all seriousness I do recommend this book since I like the dungeon creation aspect of the story. The grim reaper is the best character to me, same goes to Rob who makes this story funny to read.
- AinoumRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is a solid entry in the dungeon-core genre I thought it brought together unexpected moments, strong worldbuilding, and a plot that respects genre expectations while adding its own twists. Fans of strategic storytelling and dungeon progression will probably find much to enjoy!
With a few tweaks in side character development and a bit more sentence variety, this story could reach even greater heights. Highly recommended for fans of dungeon stories that push the genre in refreshing directions. I'd also encourage more description usage especially in instances where it matters, like the first chapter's 'Key scene' to be as broad as possible, as it would enhance the experience for sure.
To hit more specifique corners;
Characters:
So far, some the characters introduced definitely stand out. I enjoyed the dynamic between Liran and Rob, it made for a base of characters to build on-hopefully. Speaking of the main character, he was well-rounded, between ambition and stategy and vulnerability. I'm curious where his character goes next as the story progresses.
There’s a sense of real growth, too, especially after a certain alliance takes a dark turn. This story is just beginning, but I have a sense it'll only get better from here on out.
Style:
I need to point out the backdrop of this kind of dry humour that's spread throughout. It was maybe the element that stood out to me the most. Stories that can balance seriousness and humor are the best, and this one might just fall into that with a little more development.
I also found the dialogue to be realistic and fairly well done. It flows smoothly and despite the lack of proper punctuation, it manages to being the interactions to life in a fun-to-follow way.
Grammar:
I was surprised to find that the grammar was generally polished and quite readable. Sure, it's not innocent of a few minor issues here and there, but they don't tend to distract from the story's flow and overall quality. Cotton's writing style is clear, with mostly - Bloody_PotatoRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I had such a blast reading Master Dungeon! Rob, an introverted truck driver turned zombie, teams up with a snarky artifact to build his own dungeon in a hilarious and creative isekai twist. The dungeon mechanics are grounded and rewarding, with Rob relying on strategy and resources instead of instant overpowered upgrades.
The humor is great, especially with the Grim Reaper’s sarcastic remarks, and the pacing kept me hooked. The mix of lighthearted moments and serious themes is spot on. If you love dungeon-building stories with clever mechanics and fun characters, this one’s for you. Can’t wait for more! - Cynthia DawnRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is a fun story with some great humor. First, our main character dies from hitting himself with a truck door, and then he unwittingly becomes the Dungeon Master in his new after life. What’s more, he quite literally stumbles across a sentient crown that has a lot of sass and a major grudge against goblins. And naturally, our main character stumbles into a goblin straight away.
Rob is an interesting enough character, but it’s the Crown that shines. This inanimate object has its own personality full to the brim of wit, snarkiness, and some serious anger issues.
The story is engaging as it follows Rob into his new unlife. His first major task is to figure out how to be a dungeon master and what to do with the leftovers of a goblin tribe. It will be interesting to see how Rob grows in his role leading with his new goblin minions.
As for grammar, I didn’t find too many mistakes, but many sentences were missing ending punctuation. And a few sentences could have used some commas inserted.
There is much to love and get excited for in this zombie dungeon story, which is extra fun because instead of horror this is more a comedy. I look forward to reading more. - littleruuRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The first chapter brilliantly captured the protagonist's difficult/boring job and introverted nature. The characters remained consistent, and it was easy to connect with their personalities. I liked the protagonist's thoughts, and oh, the Grim Reaper—he was fun, I instantly liked him.
Your plot is quite unique, raising questions. Why does crashing into a truck send you to another dimension? Even if it was just a slight bump? Even the Grim Reaper himself was confused by this "isekai rule," which I found amusing. The setting was fascinating and made me want to read more and more, eager to learn everything about this world and its rules.
The story is a mix of humor, interesting twists, and action. The tone shifts between light-hearted humor and more serious themes, which I like. You've found a great balance between dialogue and description and it made the flow of the text smooth and enjoyable.
You explained the mechanics of dungeons fairly well, but further clarification would have been helpful for people who aren’t familiar with the set up, or just to show how your world works with more detail, even if your protagonist himself doesn’t know what’s happening.
Overall, I really enjoyed the story and would be happy to read more. Great work! - thedyingauthorRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Book Review: Master Dungeon (cause I take things like this SERIOUS, really SERIOUS! xD)
Every now and then, a book comes along that reminds you why you should probably never, NEVER, volunteer for mysterious, magical contracts—especially if they involve trolls. Master Dungeon is one of those books. It’s a chaotic, laugh-out-loud adventure packed with regenerating monstrosities, a snarky goblin sidekick, and a protagonist who has absolutely no idea what he’s doing (but really, who does?)... I MEAN WHEN DO THEY KNOW WHAT TO DO? xD
The Plot: A Rollercoaster of Chaos
From the first page, the story flings you into a dungeon that’s less of a creepy lair and more of a comedy-of-errors waiting to happen. Rob, our accidental dungeon master, learns that running a dungeon is less about treasure and glory and more about damage control—especially when zombie trolls get involved. There’s a lot to love here, from the hilarity of characters arguing about dungeon policies while chaos reigns, to moments that tug at your heartstrings when you least expect it.
That said, the pacing isn’t perfect (but what is perfect in any book in this world? :D). The story’s energy falters during the more technical explanations of how dungeons work. It’s like sitting through a tutorial while you’re itching to get back to the action. Still, once the trolls (and emotions) start flying, you’re hooked.
Characters: Heart and Humor
The real MVP of this story? Gale the goblin. She’s the plucky, practical, and utterly fearless sidekick we all wish we had (but sometimes we get a Donald who can't heal, still traumatized by Kingdom Hearts.. sorry xD). She’s glue holding the ragtag team together, though her sarcastic barbs occasionally steal the spotlight.
Tessa and Terry, the massive regenerating trolls, bring unexpected warmth to the tale. Their dynamic—a mix of terrifying power and genuine care for each other—adds surprising depth. You’ll find yourself rooting for them (and occasionally laughing at their bizarr - luda305Royal Road★★★★ 4.0Good start on page 1. Hopefully more to come! Alas, it shall not be.
