Making of a Genius [A Progression LitRPG]
Community Rating
Description
Note: Currently on hiatus because of university - will hopefully start writing after exams are over.
What does it take to climb to the top of the academic ladder?
Lexus came face to face with his mediocrity the moment he arrived at Cambridge University to study computer science. There was a ceiling that he could not overcome, an intellectual world that was unreachable.
But if you give a chicken an eagle's wings, it will fly higher than you could ever imagine.
And that was exactly what happened to Lexus: with the help of a system, he could make it big.
Schedule:1 chapter per week (every Friday evening at 5:30pm GMT). The weekly schedule is to allow time for research and factual accuracy where required.
Author's Note:
The story is about a computer science student at university, gradually improving and embarking on the path to become a world-renowned genius-level expert with the help of a system. There'll be a lot of studying and academics, but imagine being the best in your year. Easily. At that point, academics stops being stressful and starts being fun, doesn't it?
The initial chapters are heavy on mathematical detail, but I don't expect anyone to actually read through them thoroughly. It's fine to skim them or even skip them, but I hope you try to get a sense of the progress being made, and feel happy for Lexus when something 'clicks' inside his brain :)
As the story progresses, later chapters will go into less depth into individual questions, though I aim to remain consistent in terms of scientific accuracy/feasibility.
Welcome, and I hope you enjoy the story!

- SpelingErorRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really like the fact that the author includes actually equations instead of just skipping to the moment when the protagonist figures it out. I don't understand half of what is being said but I feel like the author guides me through it. I wish my math teacher was like this...
The system and levelling are solid and I can understand the differences between the levels. The book gives ample references for you to look at when you are confused. The system also doesn't seem like some kind of all-powerful being that gives the protagonist rewards. It feels like the protagonist works for what he gets and that the system is only something that guides him.
The grammar doesn't have any errors as far as I can tell. Writing is smooth and flows well.
The style is pretty good but equations take up much of the chapter and I find myself skipping over them.
Overall this novel is solid and I recommend it to anyone that actually understands math. - A V DalcourtRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Definitely a story I’m passing off to my spouse, who would certainly get a kick out the math and sciency stuffs.
Story: The story follows Lexi who is a computer science undergrad. He has a paper to hand in, and he’s stressing out, when BAM! A system perks up in his head transforming his educational journey into a series of quests to grind for XP. I kind of wish my college experience was like that…
Style: Written largely in third person with blocks of exp gain, new abilities unlocks, and loads of equations (at least initially) that’s sure to fry your poor brain – unless you know what they are. It was an quick an easy read, and very easy to follow.
Characters: Lexi is clearly a grinder when it comes to gaming – because I’d be completely disheartened with 1XP here and there, and at 10xp per book read. Oh geee… I’d just cry. At first he comes across as a lazy student, he’s late on some of his papers, and is generally unmotivated. But as soon as the system comes into play, he starts his grind and begins to connect seeming abstract concepts.
In the latest chapter he starts to questions the motives of the system that has invaded his consciousness.
I’m just loving the way this story is developing. - DeclanBoonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0As a former computer science student myself, I found this story nostalgic. I have to admit, my brain glazed over the solutions to the mathematics problems just as it did back then, but I think the author might have stumbled upon a novel way to teach university mathematics! At any rate, it has been an interesting and competently written start and I'm interested to see where it all leads.
Style
I must confess, I don't read many litrpgs but this story drew me in. It is well laid out and easy to read and follow, however as I said above, my brain just glazes over the mathematics problems and solutions.
Grammar
Seems well written, but I’m not an English teacher.
Story
Seems interesting so far but it could use more hints towards an overarching plot or an indication to what the MC gets when he "beats the game", as it were. I won’t mark this down because we are still early in the story.
Characters
I can definitely relate to Lexus as a university student who feels out of his depth when it comes to his studies. I think he and his friends are portrayed well and I'm interested to see how their relationships develop. - HellmanderRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Reminds me a lot of "scholar's advanced technological system" but less chinese tropes (which is a good thing)
I'm very curious about how this one's gonna go! I will wait for a good chunk of chapters to pile up before I dive back in as this is definitely binge-worthy.
Good vibes - NectariosBWRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'm really enjoying reading this. It's not only a compelling story, but it gives me a lot to think about. What is it about games that motivates us so much? Would people be more willing to dedicate large amounts of time to improving skills if life was gameified in this way? I'd love to see how the story explores these questions.
I know next to nothing about math, and I just skimmed over the problems that didn't seem straightforward to me (so, almost all of them lol) but this didn't negatively effect my experience at all. It definitely adds weight to Lexus' progression, and makes his advancement through the levels more tangible. Many LitRPGs seem to progress way too fast, and the protagonist flies through the levels, becoming a deity by the tenth chapter. This isn't the case in this story. There is definitely room for the MC to become incredibly powerful, but it will definitely feel earned.
One thing I would like is to learn more about Lexus himself. What drives him? Is he selfless or selfish? How might he use this newfound power? Stuff like that. However, I would expect this kind of thing to become more clear a bit later in the story, so this isn't a negative for me.
Overall, the story is great so far, and I'm excited to see where it goes! - AlixRocheRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall: I got hooked on the concept and it did not disappoint! The progression is smooth, the problems make sense and the author's passion for academia is apparent. I think the title can be more descriptive of the contents, but as far as the story inside - I have nothing to complain about.
Story: the introduction of the system and the quest log is handled really well. And while this story is indeed heavy with sequences of problem-solving, they aren't boring and make sense (at least to me). I love that the system is its own presence and interacts both directly and indirectly with Lexus.
Characters: Lexus feels more like a reader insert than a character of his own in these first few chapters, at least to me. There are certain character traits, like his motivation and his reactions to his XP gains, that show off parts of his personality. I don't think that is a bad thing though, as long as the author improves this gradually, I think it can have a great effect on readers realting to Lexus more.
Then we have the system, which I classify as a character, personally. I love the interactions between Lexus and it. It is a breath of fresh air after finishing a book or a problem.
Style: 3rd person perspective. I never thought thinking through and solving problems could have a similar feel to a monster encounter, but here it is. As Lexus solves problems, the way it is structured follows a familiar combat structure. I don't mean that Lexus is actually fighting a problem, just that it follows the same pacing as a battle. Progression feels meaningful but not rushed.
Grammar: None of the chapters were difficult to understand because of the writing (just the math was). - PeregrinateRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Preface: I used to be a computer science student, back when Java was just growing out of the coffee stage and students still thought C was the pinnacle of OO programming. Perhaps that is why I took such an immediate liking to the story?
Or perhaps it is simply because it's a cracking good story!
Style
Honestly, this is not everyones cup of java. It's heavy on the nerd, and even to us nerds it goes deep into compsci theory. The mathematical / logical proofs are not just mentioned, but included and described in full detail. You would probably get experience points in maths just from reading this story!
On the surface, it follows the LitRPG story template. Young man finds a system that can grant him powers. Very quickly, however, the story takes it into its own realm - powers are not granted just because - but the MC has to really work on it. The progression feels natural, and is congreous with the story.
Docked a half star on style, due to the heavy reliance on maths and theory. On the other hand, it shows courage on the part of the author to include it - perhaps it should instead result in a half star extra?
Grammar
Impeccable.
Anything else?
No really. This author commands the language.
Story
Apart from what I've already written - the story leverages the classic Progression MC goes to school trope, but sets it in one of the elite Universities worldwide.
So far, there's little hint of any underlying story archetype or template, except for the university progression plit, and I'm truly curious to see what the author intends to do with this story. I've favourited the story and will keep reading, but I hope we get taken on an adventure soon!
Character(s)
The MC and his friend Arthur are poth portrayed well, and both their friendship as well as their personality and quirks shine through without needless exposition. I took an instant like to Lexi when he picked the foundational mathematics text to get started, as it shows foresight and a will to build a proper foundation - RoenzRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style
The writing style is very good. (Especially in the first chapter when the math equation hasn't been present yet. Haha.) I love how the story progresses. It feels like a flow and the pace is also right. Not too fast and not too slow. The detailed math problems is definitely not my cup, but I think it's not a bad thing. It gave the story the real feeling of a student studying.
Story
This is not typical litRPG when you go on an adventure to slay monsters and gain experiences. This is just like real life when you gain experience through study. A unique approach for a story, but for me, it's not so exciting. I prefer swinging a sword while having a life and death experience.
Grammar
Since I'm not a native, I think grammar is not for me to give any comments. I even need to open google translate just to understand some words. Haha.
Character
The characters are basic, but for this kind of story, it just feels right. The story goes around the MC who is an ordinary student. And we all can relate to a student without any further explanation. To make the story more colorful, maybe it’s a good idea to add a female character as a love interest as well as an obstacle for the MC to keep studying. - gushyRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Preface: This is apart of a review swap.
---
Grammar: Minor grammatical error (like having the comma taking place after the dialogue); otherwise, it's perfectly fine and I have no complaints.
Style: So I don't know anything about mathematics (college-level that is) but the explanations given seems reasonable. I may not understand it but I trust the author enough where I hope they aren't giving me the wrong information. I can only imagine the complexitiy beyond when the MC reaches higher levels.
Story: The story is simple. It doesn't try to do anything fancy. It's just a student trying to do math and all these other mumbo jumbo as best and effectively as possible. I have no complaints here, but it really is a niche story. You need a love of math to appreciate the level of sophsication this fic presents.
Character: I suspect that the characters here won't have the most thrilling personalities and developments; for this type of story, that's alright. The MC is plain and basic, and if you can stomach/ignore that, you can focus on the progression itself.
All in all, very maths. But read this only if you have a deep interest and knowledge, then you can appreciate this fic more than I ever can - OmniextRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Good stuff here. The system feels like it's merely gradually changing the mindset of Lexus so that he learns better- which is probably what the author was going for. The system doesn't help as much as most do, and that's nice to see for once.
It's a bit too early for me to comment on characters, but I like them so far.
Do keep in mind that it might be too heavy on the math and computer science for some. Like, the first few chapters had a bunch of discrete math, and the next few dip into data structures and algorithms.
