Description
In a world where a person's Class dictates their future, Dwayne “Otter” Bennett is an anomaly. Born with painfully average stats, except a staggering Luck of 18, he was never offered a Class. Now, he faces a life of mediocrity—until a letter from his missing father hints at secrets hidden within the prestigious Adventurers' Academy.
When an unexpected opportunity lands in his lap, Otter seizes his last chance to prove himself, securing a spot in the Academy. But it is a ruthless place, and surviving the trials means facing skilled rivals, dangerous secrets, and a System designed to leave people like him behind.
As Otter pushes forward, his Luck begins manifesting in strange ways, leading him to rumors of hidden Classes and a relic that responds to his presence in bizarre ways. During a simulation test in the ruins beneath the Academy, a real Kaosborn manifests, turning a controlled exam into a deadly fight for survival. In the aftermath, Otter learns that he, and his extraordinary Luck, may be the key to restructuring the System. For better...or worse.

- Mr wongRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a great story - worth the read!! Character development great! Plot great! The Mc has a high luck stat but the world’s system just won’t give him a class. But he’s caught the notice of an academy professor… maybe he will get to stay with his best friend even though many others look down on him because of his lack of a class…
- AcaiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is a fantastic blend of intelligence, balance, and world-building. The main character stands out not because of his power but because of his strategic thinking and adaptability. I really appreciate a story where the MC isn’t overpowered and has to use creativity to navigate through challenges.
The world itself is richly developed, filled with fascinating lore, and a class and ability system that draws clever parallels to Dungeons & Dragons while remaining unique. Every character feels distinct, with personalities that add depth to the story rather than just filling roles.
Whether you’re a fan of deep strategy, immersive storytelling, or well-structured progression, this is a must-read. - Baron FulmenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I'd already given this story five stars, but I just noticed the two-star review entitled "Chapter 19" and decided to give an actual review just to say that I have no idea what that person is talking about and completely disagree with them. While the main character not having a class does come up a lot in earlier chapters, it's not done in an annoying or unrealistic way nor does it make the MC come off as whiny. Anyway, I'm about seventy-five chapters in and enjoying it a lot, so come on and give it a shot.
- marthyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I very much enjoyed this book.
Otter is a regular guy with a bit of extra good luck.
He is not some flashy genius superhero, who will concur the universe with unrealistic super powers. He accidentally wins the sparring match by slipping on a pebble. He surrounds himself with good friends, prepares for the possibilities and takes advantage the opportunities granted by the system.
Luck is just when preparation meets opportunity. Or so we will see as the series continues. - FooBarTrixieBellRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Not too heavy on the system stats, very heavy on the prose, which is good.
The author builds a compelling world with well filled out characters and an interesting story line.
It is well written, I caught very few mistakes and the writing was eloquent and well paced.
I like that the story is structured into clear delineated (and I am assuming pre-planned) book story arcs with a beginning middle and end, all too often royal road authors write a million words and then try to split them up.
I am looking forward to reading book 2! - Mungo73Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0The protagonist is invited to join the academy despite having no "class" based on his "potential" - a super high luck stat.
He meets friends, antagonists and people in between. Being tasked to support the library for the semester, he starts to get glimpses of a wider mystery. Excelling at map making and navigation, he really would love to get a related class.
Overall I like the "academy" feeling coupled with "mystery" and "adventure". Each chapter progresses the story in a meaningful way without giving a feeling of being rushed. The power level is quite low, i.e., no ridiculous feats of slaying dragons and gods at level 1, which helps the immersiveness as well as identifying with the characters. I also like that the author deliberately introduces topics like injustice to create an emotional reaction with the audience, showing how the story is not just about "telling something" but rather consciously crafted.
The characters are not stereotype, at least not the main ones. E.g., the girl friend does not follow the hero on his quest, some characters behave badly but their motivations seem to be more complicated than just "greed" or "being the bad guy". The main character is smart without being smartass and recognizes changes in people as well as strengths and weaknesses of others. While being outclassed, he is not a victim but
In terms of style, the author switches in relatively short paragraphs / sentences between action, description and emotion - making it easy to picture the scenes and follow the story. - GlacialUmbraRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I thoroughly enjoyed this story, the characters were written well enough to feel like someone you might actually meet. Every major event that happend made me want to read more. I am a audio book listener mostly so I'm not the best judge of grammer but, it was written in a way that even with the bland ai voice every character felt like they had there own personality so I never really wondered who was talking. My only complaint is that in some points it kinda feels like time gets skipped too much to be a slice of life, there's definitely chapters that make it feel more like a slice of life but good portion of those are just to make another story reveal
- RaccoonukiRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0It has some decent content. It's well written, despite feeling very predictable. There's nothing earth shatteringly unique about it, but it has a great flow and is a very compelling story despite my criticism. If you're new to this type of content it's gonna feel fresh and exciting. If you're an old hand who is a bit meh on the genre as a whole will still be a good read for you.
- BlackBaronRedRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0The tale is interesting and well told. That said, I find the digital watches difficult to reconcile with the rest of the late medieval world. They are used by the author as an alternative to the blue status screen in other stories and if you accept them as that, then you can enjoy this tale.
- AbandonRoyal Road★★ 2.0Its a ok book but the main character is a very annoying whiny boy allways going on only if i had a class over and over.Supposedly he is trying to find out about his father but its only a side issue.Mostly its about if he only has a class,At the beginning he is smart inovative and interesting but that changed.
