In 1668 Leeds, Lucian Daiwik—the youngest son of a respected wool merchant—and his twin, Leon, ought to be worrying over Latin lessons or how to slip pastries from the kitchen unnoticed—not visions of hounds made of shadows, bone-and-blood curses, and shapeshifting boggarts that claw at the windows in the dead of night.
But when the King’s Clerk of Signet arrives at the Daiwik estate, Lucian learns the truth: his so-called tricks are not mischief but magic—wild, uncontrolled, and far more dangerous than he ever feared.
Now, the twin brothers are forced to leave their home behind and train as novice magi in Grovewell, a hidden city deep within the woods of Temple Newsam. There, within the Primordium, Lucian discovers that his magic is not only rare—it is dangerous. It reaches toward ancient myths, linking him to corrupt magic, to bone-and-blood curses, and to a secret older than the world itself.
As witchcraft accusations close in on the mundane world and power-hungry magi stir within the hidden one, a corrupt magus stalks Lucian’s family from the shadows—drawn to the very power Lucian struggles to contain.
Now, Lucian must choose: get rid of his magic and live a safe life, or embrace it—and risk becoming the very thing both townsfolk and magi already fear him to be.
Lucian Daiwik’s Secrecy: The Awakening of Untamed Magic is the first book in a seven-part historical fantasy saga, blending 17th-century English life with hidden magical cities, dark mystery, and a coming-of-age tale where power comes at a cost.
So tell me—does magiccraft come from God… or from beings far more sinister?

- A. LeechRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really have enjoyed the first chapter and absolutely will keep reading!!
All the characters have something to add to the story, they’re queer and unique enough.
The timeline is very obvious, you have got that across perfectly! I wasn't sure as to why the clerk is coming to assess them. Is it to informally interview them? Have they already sat an intelligence test and passed it?
Initially I thought he would have to hide his gifts from the King's clerk, (due to accusations of witchcraft!), then thought he was being sought out because of them, so I was definitely unsure.
This is where I foolishly got mixed up! I thought he was holding off using his talents until he went to his new school. I misread it as he is trying to delay her until he's left home and she won't be a problem any longer! It is my fault, not yours!
"He knew she would. Better to string her along, keep her sweet, and wait until they were off to Temple Newsam."
My confusion is totally down to my misunderstanding, I wasn't initially sure whether you should add further clarification. However, I suppose others could make the same mistake, so it might he wise to make this crystal clear? What do you think?
I know I ask a ton of questions, please don't feel obliged to answer every one, I will feel bad! I ask questions and comment naturally, (and on purpose really), to give you, the author, an idea of what the reader is thinking as they read! It's my feedback style and I wouldn't want to take up your time, if you felt as if you had to reply to all of them! :) - FelixTheGreatRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Dude, as someone who’s devoured every fantasy series from Sanderson's Cosmere to the Witcher games and Elder Scrolls lore, this plot really grabbed me. Lucian's main story is the classic "reluctant mage awakening" story, but with a gritty twist set in England during the witch hunt of 1668 that feels new and scary. A kid trying to hide the magic that makes frogs grow by accident while his family's wool business is about to go under? Then he gets pulled into the secret city of Grovewell? That's a lot of gold. It has the same "ordinary world to magical academy" structure as Harry Potter, but it's much darker. It's like Dragon Age's blood magic corruption mixed with the paranoia of Outlast or Amnesia. The "untamed" magic being linked to forbidden bones and rituals right away makes me think of high stakes.
The coming-of-age angle with real historical weight gives it the same emotional punch that games like The Witcher 3 do so well. I'm already picturing Lucian slowly realising that his power could make him the monster everyone is afraid of. I can't wait to see how the "monster" choice affects the rest of the series. This has a lot of potential. Sign me up for the whole story! - L. ThomasRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I found out about Lucian on a TikTok post, and I just had to check it out. And I'm glad I did.
So far, I've really liked the story and plot. The mood is dark and creepy in a subtle, action- and tension-filled, historical way that makes magic seem dangerous instead of flashy.
I loved how the world and the magic are revealed slowly, piece by piece, instead of being dumped all at once, and I liked learning things with Lucian instead of having everything explained to me at once.
As the main character, Lucian seems very real. He is afraid of what his power might mean, which makes him feel like a real twelve-year-old who is in something much bigger than he understands. That weakness makes the story much better.
The mood was what stood out to me the most. The tension comes from feeling uneasy, suspicious, and like something could go wrong at any moment, not from constant action. There are times when the pacing is slow and there is a lot of thinking, but that actually fits the story's dark, creeping tone.
This feels like a strong, atmospheric start that carefully sets up what's to come. This is definitely worth sticking with if you like fantasy that focuses on characters and builds up a sense of dread over time.
