- Daniel ZRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Disclaimer: I am a Pride and Prejudice fan, having read the book, watched the movie and TV series and have some familiarity with the occasional variant, most relevantly the Pride and Prejudice and Zombies mashup (book and movie).
The Story: This is a Pride and Prejudice mashup, combining the canonical story with superpowers intrigue and action. The original story provides a broad canvas but the story is now developing and is entertaining on its own terms. One thing that makes the original story brilliant is superlative Jane Austen dry humour - this tends to get diluted and mostly lost in this mashup in a way that it is not in the Zombies mashup (if in a dark kind of way).
The Characters: The key characters are the same - and if you know the book you kind of know largely what to expect - but the author is happy to make 'variants' (both in the sets of characters and in the way they interact with each other) in ways that I cannot go into without spoilers.
The Style: 3rd person with different POVs is the choice adopted. One problem with the range of POVs chosen is that it largely removes the aspects of mystery that otherwise the story would have even if one knows the original story; and I am not sure that the choice of POV is always optimal in terms of the narrative.
The Grammar: Occasional infelicities but entirely serviceable and professional generallly.
Overall: So far this makes a reasonably entertaining read (if not quite at the level of the Zombies mashup), and is supported by frequent updates. And I suspect that, if you are not familiar with Pride and Prejudice and you do not mind a romance element somewhere in the story, you may enjoy it perhaps more. - tikiiriaRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I went into this with a layer of expectation of dry humor. It was unfortunately lacking compared to Pride and Prejudice or pride, Prejudice Zombies. Deviation of characters and behavior were expected but Mr. Darcy was a bit more emotionally vocal at times outside of romance than I expected. The POV narrative was done okay but I think it would have benefited a narrator not a POV perspective.
But Mr Darcy and is night vision is an issue for me. Yes it is fantasy but be consistent. Everyone else follows a string for their gift. Body manipulation to healing/harm/modification etc works. Strength to speed/decrease damage taken/self heal works. But vision from gravity is harder for me to accept. Night vision is from the spectral length and density not the redirected path cause by a gravity manipulation. And either he would be modifying the gravity of all space around him to a cosmic body level of gravity to change the light path or doing the same amount of modification to his eyes.
