Description

Jonathan was living the life of a normal human male in modern-day society, until he was rudely awakened one night by a summoning circle that ripped him out of his reality and dumped him into a new world filled with magic, demons, and…mouthy young orphan girls?!

Now Jonathan must navigate the trials of playing guardian to a preteen, learning to unlock his inner demon, and somehow managing to find a dang pair of pants!

Welcome! I'm E.O. Tenkey; thank you for considering Living as a Demon, my third released work here on Royal Road (followingNot a MangaandMr. Familiar)! Let's set some expectations, shall we?

•Not much hard profanity(chapter 1 is the exception!)•Human MC!Our protagonist is a bona fide homo sapiens. Which is not to say there won't be demons, demonic powers, and what-have-you, but this isn't some grimdark exploration of the life and times of a nihilistic, amoral killing machine.•Slice of life.My previous works always ended up there, so might as well get ahead of the curve!•Weekly updates, and a completed story:I will post a single chapter per week on Wednesdays until the story is complete (extra chapters are rare, but do happen).

Rather great, love the the dynamic between Jonathan and Abigail. Also, I love the mystery aspect to Jonathan's condition love a magical mystery. the dialogue is decent and the atmosphere evocative of Victorian England. The author seems to have put a lot of thought not only into the magic system put olo into the politics and economics of the world. I am enjoying it.

First of all I want to say that the 1 and .5 star ratings didnt give this story enough of a chance at all. The story does get off to a bit of a slow start, but it more than makes up for it later.
Characters- good characters overall and it specifically addresses one of my pet peeves of isekai'd characters that are fine one chapter later. Takes a bit, but we do get to see that the characters definitely aren't one dimensional and have hidden layers.
Grammar- I'm not the best judge, but i haven't noticed anything wrong with it so 5 stars there.
Story- As previously it's a bit of a slow start, with just some small slice of life problems, but it develops good arcs a bit further in with both a minor antagonist for now and a larger threat further in the horizon for likely future arcs.
Style- Good overall, I personally like a couple more viewpoint changes thrown in, but it does a good job of conveying what's happening through the MC's eyes as well as what he's thinking.
Overall a bit of a slow start, but definitely worth a read. Criminally underrated so far. Keep up the good work author :)

Overall very nice story, only thing that bothered me slightly was that the MC never really exxplored his seemingly limitless possibilities, even when they were considered before and were obvious improvements to his chosen alternatives.
Prime example would be not experimenting with telepotation of people, which would have been the obvious solution to extracting his children from danger several times.
Other than that, the story is pretty straightforward with no real plot twists, some of the author notes unfortunately spoil the coming chapters, which is a bit of a shame.
Grammar was just about perfect, apart from some minor typos i barely noticed.
There was a lot of characters, each noticably different from another and fairly three-dimnensional, with a focus on the fact that most are children and how children would behave. But the level of childlike behaviour was not very constant, either because they are children from the streets that are very mature or because it was just not expressed very well at times (or because i am just wrong how children would behave, who knows?), but it felt weird having 6-9 years old children act rationally under pressure. Another thing i found weird was that a gang of street children just trusted a demonic stranger over the span of a single day and just became docile children overnight, with absolutely no problem accepting authority or any kind of wariness one would expect from a gang of street children.
But overall, i liked the story building an actual in-depth, failry unique magic system with more than just arbitrary numbers and stats, and focuses in detail on the living situation of the characters instead of some epic exploitation of magic to become *random position of power and prestige*.

A nice fuzzy slice of life story telling a tale of our demonically summoned MC, and his pint size summoner. Very low stakes at first, but by chap 15 there is some mild peril forcing the story to a bit more world building.
If the worldbuilding continues it could be a very good slice of life story, but as is the story is decent.

The only thing I know, is that those who put a low review were either not willing to give this a chance, read the early chapters with out the following chapters, or were perhaps not happy with the pace.
MY GOD GIVE THIS A CHANCE!!!
I really enjoy the MC and how his situation really plays out.  Way far away from his home, we find our MC whisked away to a complete unknown world, where culture shock is the least of his problems.  Stuck with an unknown everything trying to make heads or tails of where he is.
Its just your average Joe, in a different world, turned child caretaker.  There is alot of potential for something great, something Grand.
Just give it a chance. Abby is much more than what she seems. That darn Demon Book from chapter 1 is the same and it is the biggest mystery of this story so far.  Where did it come from? What was it doing in childerns ophanage? And the biggest mystery of them all... How was your regular Joe / Johnathan Brought to this world?  And why the God or overlord whatever of demon kind bind a forgotten (by human standards) Demon to the victum of world transfor.

I liked it. Plot progresses at a good pace, good use of exposition and descriptions without getting bogged down.
Noticed some editing errors, though only a few. The only one I can remember off the top of my head was during the part where Chris was returning from scouting the city after the Petty Baron had his meeting with Ebola. Leading sentence on one of the paragraphs was a bit jumbled up.

Took a bit to get going but once it did I really liked it. All the characters are distinct and decently well written. I like the bits of world building and the magic system is pretty unique and interesting. I want to see how he developes his magic, like combining his moden knowledge to conjure technology.

First and foremost: adding the "slice of life" tag IMO is more than warranted, it's necessary (UPDATE: it's there, last one). In over 50 chapters we had two conflicts. Yes, the slice of life is stated by the author in the expectations, and I quote: "My previous works always ended up there, so might as well get ahead of the curve!", but honestly, this is slice-of-life from the get-go: explore the orphanage while looking for pants, try conjuring oatmeal for breakfast, look into water plumbing... that, my friends, was three chapters already (IMO, more like scenes, but here they are chapters). And while they do convey extra information, neatly weaving in tidbits like how magic works in plumbing, that the new world knows lead poisoning, or that summoning things is possible, etc. It's neat, it doesn't mess anything... but
    1) the cynical part of me says it doesn't mess anything, cause there's nothing TO mess.
    2) it's simply uninteresting!
I know too little about the world to even begin with.
Magic system is fun but quickly takes a back seat to orphanage stuff. While Jonathan's magic is revealed to be interesting and dangerous people will want it, it's just a far-away ahead looming shadow of Damocles' sword, somewhere beyond the horizon. I'd probably have to wait for 100 chapters more before this rears its head. And that also this, for plot reasons, takes a back seat to slice of life, because
MC pays with his life for doing magic. So MC must find other "contractors", hence more children in the orphanage.
The characters are a 9-year-old and the MC. Who very belatedly realizes the trick with demon names - I kinda wondered if that was plot reasons too. I mean, come on,
I get Anthrax, but Typhoid and Ebola should be a solid hint, warranting a question to anybody local in this new world.
The best character is a neighbour, who - unfortunately - does his damned best to NOT be involved. Let's be clear about the characters: they aren't bad, I usually know who is speaking. They - unf

For those of you who hate idiot mcs, don't read this. The MC, in the first couple chapters can't even negotiate with a 6 year old to get a good deal and he is willfully ignorant of his situation. The story tries to be funny but is mostly just illogical due to the 'humor' not really making sense in a real world. I think the author would benefit from thinking of what he would really do if he was in the mc's situation and not just try to make the situation itself funny. I know I would be trying to get the best deal possible from the girl.
There are some pretty big plotholes too. Why didn't the Mc just say he would tell the truth in the contract if he was so adamant about convincing her he wasn't a demon. Since they both know if he lies then he could just explain his situation. I don't believe that a grown man couldn't take advantage of the 6 year old. Especially the way she is portrayed. She literally breaks the summoning circle herself to get a sandwich because she was hungry. If he was a demon she could have died.
Tldr: unrealistic characters and actions. The Mc is stupid in order for certain situations to happen. 1 star. Grammar is the saving grace.

I tend to find this happening sometimes in stories. Such as giving a story a title of dwarf's story yet have none of the focus on dwarves in general or a title about lust yet not much about it as story.
Or for this case for demons and yet there's no demons. People who Obviously come to read the story expecting demons or the like would be sorely disappointed. Even the story's summary literally mentioned that there's no demons in it. I usually attribute these authors as someone who wants to have their cake of something but none of the things truly related to it and eat it.
A basic understanding in naming a title or brand in general is that it's to be used to attract the right crowd instead of giving false promises, which is pretty common enough across various mediums.
Even after ignoring all that to read the story itself. It was still pretty subpar. A short summary of the chapters I've read so far is mostly about a lot of Teehee "funny" moments with a lot of mentions of getting a pair of pants and sandwich.
Not much about it except denying that demons are not the mc and whatnot. Even till chapter 5, all this are still happening without much progression, it's not a slow burn but deliberate hindrance to the story. A general hollow and shallow story.
