- Ink & TomeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Disclaimer: this review is based only off of what I've read so far, up through the end of Chapter 5. Do with that information as you will.
To start with, I just want to say that I'm a sucker for "celestial fantasy" involving angelic beings and all that sort of story might entail. I just find it to be super fascinating. So, to say I'm happy with what I've found while reading Light Eaters, even just the first five chapters, is an incredible understatement.
Let's get into the details, shall we?
Style: When it comes to the author's writing style, it really felt like a perfect fit for the type of story they're trying to tell here. The prose was beautiful and easy to follow, and paragraphs were well sized with great pacing throughout. I didn't feel overwhelmed with information at any point as I read, which can be difficult when you're having to describe an entirely made-up world to an audience stepping into said world for the first time. This was some seriously good writing.
Story: I don't know how, but somehow I missed the info in the description for the story (minor spoilers for those who missed the same thing I did) that we weren't following our central protagonist during the first four chapters. I'm not sure how or why that happened, but what I CAN say was that it made for an extremely pleasant shock when suddenly Julius turned on Lazar and the following chapter we were suddenly following HIM.
I have to say, I was definitely interested to see where things were going prior to that but this was the moment where said interest got dialed up to eleven. Suddenly, I had to know what was going to happened next. It was at that moment that Light Eaters shot to the top of my To Be Read list and I knew this could really be something special!
Grammar: There's not a lot to say here, I didn't really notice more than maybe one or two issues as I read and they were super minor. Full marks here, thank you for a very visually clean reading experience!
Character: While I haven't REALLY h - LifeWisherRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Immeasurable potential.
It feels like I am reviewing one of the future big ones.
Light Eaters is a bold story that does what it does in a great way. I don’t think I want to break down this review into different parts, but I will still try to the best of my ability while avoiding spoilers.
First of all, I need to give the author my sincere admiration for the way the introduction into the story was done, and how well it twisted things around for the readers. It is something that has been tried before I am sure, as I have seen it done, but I have not seen such great execution. Well done!
The prose is very good, both vivid where it needs to be and easy to follow.
The world is slowly built into our minds one piece at a time, without overwhelming us with its complexities and details. I enjoyed the large amount of information we were given, but some might find it a bit too much, I guess.
I say the story so far has been very balanced and offers something for all readers – be it action, worldbuilding, or a more intimate look into the character’s psyche.
I found no issues with the grammar at all, but I was so engrossed in the story I wouldn’t have noticed even if there were some.
The characters are fleshed out and well-rounded and leave a lot of questions that we, as readers, want answered.
I recommend this highly and think it has the potential to be a very popular story if the quality remains the same. - SunnyBreadRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Loved the writing - while it seems like a standard progression fantasy, what makes this story shine is the relationship between the characters.
The first four chapters do a good job of setting up Julius and Lazar's relationship - and the remaining chapters focus on how that relationship changers. Even the minor characters have their own history - I loved the poignancy of Cassius talking about his son and their history. This keeps you invested.
There is plenty of action too. And I liked the world building - and this story feels like it's setting Lazar up to start thinking of the world he lives in. - Wolfgang HuxRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I don't think I've ever read a story in this exact niche on RR... and I love it! The sky is the limit for this story (get it? because of... nevermind). But truly, I see a lot of potential here. Its a rich world with deep characters and a lot of stuff to explore. Let's dive into the review a bit here.
STYLE: The author has a unique style that is very powerful when it needs to be. I think the worldbuilding and strong characterization are big here. Sometimes action takes a bit longer to get to, but the author makes it worth your wait. So just be patient! Trust me! Things get very interesting as you get deeper into this world.
STORY: I'm truly, truly curious as I read this. And I think that's a huge reason why I kept turning the pages and reading more. There is so much lore here to absorb and learn and a lot of conflict both external and internal to the characters.
CHARACTER: Oh yeah, did I mention characters? Lazar and Julius are fantastic characters with their own strengths and weaknesses that really keep you invested. I think this absolutely a high point of the story.
GRAMMAR: I saw no issues at all here.
CONCLUSION: Read this. It gets the Hux stamp of approval :) - juhgRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I clicked on this title after expecting an exciting and unique story based off the title and thumbnail, and this delivers so far. While celestial fantasy has been attempted more times than can be counted, Light Eaters does a good job humanizing characters from just the first chapter!
Although this story only contains two chapters thus far, I can definitely say that the story introduces itself with tantalizing mystery and gets packed with action. Tropes remain as they always are: overused, but nobody needs to reinvent the wheel in every book.
Hopefully, this book will not fall into any traps such as boring OP MCs and maintain tension throughout. Overall, I just want someone to hook me up with some more chapters!
Edit at Chapter 5:
A delectable twist turned these first five chapters into of the best intro sequences I have ever had the pleasure to read. If the author keeps up this tension and mystery throughout the book, it will surely culminate as a great book!
