I highly recommend this story. I have seen reviews that talk about how much they dislike the MC. He does start off as the weakest, but that gives him plenty of room for growth. Give this story a shot and you will see that growth.
What I like most about this story is the interactions between the main character and his group of friends. I have loved seeing how their friendship has evolved throughout the story and how much the characters have grown.
The cultivation system is pretty typical for a xianxia story, but is done well. What sets this apart from other stories is that the MC doesn't have a heaven-defying cheat. He is talented and has fortuitous encounters, but his progress comes down to hard work. I like that his friends work hard with him and hope that they don't get left behind like is common in this genre.
The author tends to focus on insights when it comes to cultivation which works well for the story. I do find myself wishing the actual cultivation process had more detail, but I realize that might be tedious and take away from the story.

Going ahead and giving 5 stars for now. There's not a lot of chapters out yet, but what is out I'm enjoying.
The MC is why I'm giving this 5 stars. So far, I like him. Humble beginnings but doesn't seem to have a massive chip on his shoulder. No being crippled or broken somehow that turns out to be OP. No OP start. Just a normal commoner who gets a realistic opportunity to better himself and is taking advantage of it. He does need to find something to motivate him soon though, or a specific goal he wants to reach, rather than just a vague desire to get stronger.
Side characters are still rather flat but I'm hoping that improves as more chapters release. They haven't been around for more than a few chapters at this point, so it's not a criticism yet.
Only thing I would criticise is that his current rival seems to be taking things extremely personally, but I cannot figure out why. MC has done literally nothing, not even a typical accidentally offended the Young Master event. She just kinda...hates him for existing apparently. Unless the author is trying to go for an enemies to lovers trope I don't understand her extreme reaction to him.

I'll be honest, cultivation novels aren't usually my thing. However, the cover is amazing and drew me in, the summary enticed me to open the first page, and the story itself had me keep going. This isn't a story to miss out on if you can't get enough cultivation fictions, and even if you can, you still need to check it out.
Style: The pacing is excellent and kept me interested for more with each chapter. The style is descriptive without being too much, and I honestly have no complaints. Easygoing, flows well, what more do you want?
Story and Character: He Yu, the young man seeking to become a cultivator, is really the star here. As it should be. He's believable, likeable, and easy to root for. There's also a sense of a larger world at play here that is established early on, that a lot of fictions have trouble establishing well that makes sense in the narrative. Not here.
Grammar: No issues at all. It was obviously edited. There's an occasional comma out of place but that's incredibly minor and doesn't pull me out of the story.
tl;dr: Great fiction for Xianxia that's well paced, easy to enjoy, and fun to read.

Something that I really appreciate is the fact that the protagonist doesn't immediately get used to how ruthless the cultivation world actually is. He instead learns through experiences and makes his own conclusions about the overall society, instead of just immediately accepting that this is how the world works.
I also appreciate that the author (intentionally or not) makes the main cast feel like actual teenagers. In nearly all cultivation books I've read, the only reason the Protagonist is in his or her teens, is to make their progress seem all the more impressive. But the main cast of Legend of Ascension have to deal with their own insecurities and conflicts that are just apart of growing up.
All in all, this is a really great story and you should definitely check it out.

This isn’t some crazy out there cultivation subversion story. This is just the pure, raw unfiltered elements that make the genre great condensed in an extremely well written, well executed journey. The characters, setting, and plot are standard, but still distinct enough to make something worth following and getting invested in.

This is an awesome adventure, filled with trials and tribulations. It could, with a little polishing, be as great as the legendary Cradle series.
The story is very well thought out and, now that I've caught up, I can only be happy for what I've experienced, and sad that what is to come won't come any faster.

Boots weaves a tale of adventure, drama, and of course progression, along with plenty of rich worldbuilding in this book.
The core cast consists of convincingly written characters with their own convictions, morals, and consistent personalities that are all distinct and likable. Any drama is generally resolved reasonably without any stupidity for the sake of plot.
Not much moral greyness to be found, the main antagonist is established to be distinctly evil early on in the story, and the MC is most certainly righteous without any dabbling in the demonic side of cultivation.
The overarching story is being built up slowly but at a reasonably pace and promises to pay off, and each smaller arc has never failed to exceed expectations of their build-ups.
The cultivation system is explained well throughout the book as it progresses, and has clearly been fleshed out and thought through.
Style has only improved over time, and it was good to begin with; battles and climatic moments are painted vividly with words, speech patterns are consistent and dialogue is well written and at times impactful, especially between the main cast.
Good and consistent grammar is maintained throughout the book. There are some infrequent typos, but nothing egregious.
Cannot recommend following this book enough.

This is a great story following a young boy from his childhood in a remote village, through the trials and tribulations of life (and then a few more, because life is not all roses) to an epic confrontation. There were times when I struggled to read the next chapter because things were going so badly for our hero but each chapter was well written and, more importantly, a few chapters later some light would return to the story.

Full disclosure: I'm not a fan of cultivation stories. But, a friend of mine encouraged me to check this one out,  and I've been very pleasantly surprised.
The characters are all very fleshed out and well written. I'm just as invested in Chen Fei and Li Heng as I am in He Yu's path. The desire to punch Sha Xiang in the mouth is strong, but I'm hoping there's something redeeming to her character later on. And what is Zhang Lifen's *real* plan for He Yu?
Like I said before,  I'm not a cultivation fan. However,  Boots describes it in a way that flows nicely with the story and doesn't bog you down if you aren't well versed in the concept. I actually think I understand it a  bit better now than I did before if we're being honest. I'm looking forward to He Yu growing his talents (and maybe putting Sha Xiang in her place????)
On technical aspects like spelling and grammar, it's pretty clear Boots has been at this for a while. A clean read for sure.
Overall, if you're a fan of cultivation stories, give it a read. If you're a fan of well thought out characters and their interpersonal relationships, give it a read. If you're just looking for something to pass some time, maybe don't give it a read, unless you're willing to become invested.  This is one you're going to want to keep up with till the end.

Disclaimer: This is a review swap.
    Style (4/5):
The style of the story is quite engaging. It's written in a light fantasy style that draws the reader into the world of cultivators. The descriptions are vivid without being overly flowery. The action flows smoothly and feels natural. The dialogue matches the characters well. Overall, the style works nicely for the story.
    Story (4/5):
The story follows a young cultivator named He Yu who leaves his small town to join an elite sect and work towards ascending the realms of cultivation. It captures well the sense of a larger world beyond the protagonist's limited experience. The pacing moves along steadily without dragging. The stakes feel real as He Yu tries to catch up to his peers. The story sets up interesting plot threads to be explored. Overall, it makes for an enjoyable adventure fantasy.
    Grammar (4.5/5):
The grammar is quite solid overall. The sentences flow together smoothly. There are no glaring grammatical errors. The tenses remain consistent throughout. The only nitpick is the occasional misplaced comma or odd sentence structure. But these minor issues are infrequent.
    Characters (4.5/5):
He Yu is a likeable underdog protagonist who is easy to root for. His friends like Li Heng and Chen Fei add personality, as do antagonists like Sha Xiang. Most characters feel distinct with clear motivations. They help move the story forward. Perhaps some side characters could use a bit more depth. But the major players are developed appropriately so far.
    Overall Score (4.5/5)
This fantasy adventure makes for an entertaining read thanks to an engaging style, steady plot, relatable characters, and solid technical writing. The world and magic system around cultivation are interesting. And the story raises intriguing questions to hopefully be explored later. Some side characters may need more depth eventually. But on the whole, it's a well-done beginning that leaves the reader wanting more.
