- ElorieRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Is what makes this one a bit different, very much deliberately.
Thus far, it's adequately done, with the necessary self-winking from a reincarnator who expected 'young masters' and the usual cultivator novel craziness.
Of course, that's just in his particular sect... the yarn ranges widely.
Word Word Word Word Word Word Word - slargonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So far a good take on a Xianxia style novel
Characters are engaging and so far 3 dimentional
The setting seems well thought out and while the cultivation system isn't anything novel, it is well fleshed out and works.
Overall a good read so far if you like classic Xianxia, with no sign of an impending harem to ruin the story. - TheHuscarlRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Reincarnated MC in sect focusing on combat with special alchemy friend who focuses on alchemy. Has a rival, and characters in general seem to follow what is expected from the genre, but well-executed imo (the characters aren't annoying/completely-irrational). Especially love the slight twist on the alchemy friend.
No major plot has come up, or been alluded to afaik. Maybe with the orphan raising the sect does? Eh. So i'd think of the story as a great Slice of Life until that point.
Great recommend till this point. - The Storm KingRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0The story has very good potential.
The characters are interesting, the pacing is good and the setting is standard but appears well done. There don't appear to be any story hooks yet, except watching a young cultivators life. But it's still early so I assume we will get more.
I find it strange, and it hasn't been yet explained, that someone reborn in a world of cultivation, who could think on an adult level from being a child, isn't a prodigy. Though there appears to be a story behind that so I'll wait with making it a real criticism.
One more negative that I see is that the author needs a bit more writing experience. The sentences flow sometimes a bit strangely and are often unnecessarily long. Some more description of the characters thoughts and some more of the visual setting would also be good. Too often it feels a bit as if actions and situations are narrated one after the other.
But all of those things go away with more experience - so I have high hopes for this work.
All in all, especially compared to some other stuff here that people love that I find to be garbage, I very much recommend giving this a read. - VevcdfRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5This is so far definitely close to your typical power fantasy.
But it does have better writing and is overall a lot better.
Saying that, there is a few places I THINK could be improved.
(Sorry this gets a bit ranty and sorry if it sounds harsh, not my intention)
First, the amount of times the phrase "green eyed Cultivator" or "feline cultivator" is used makes me physically angry.
Secondly, 62 chapters in and there doesn't seem to be much of a story. A-side from simple slice of life cultivation. There is definitely hints and I imagine the sects will end up in conflict with the great empire.
On that note I REALLY hope the story doesn't go down the "the empire is pure evil whilst the sects are pure good" path. I think it would be cool to see some internal conflict between the sects instead of just all the good guys being friends. It is much more realistic and entertaining for there to be multiple faction even within each sect that although work towards the good of the sect, they will suppress their oposition whilst trying to increase their own benefits. There is only a limited amount of resources right? So when an elder gives MC resources that is resources that cannot go to someone else. Other elders should be upset about that and should challenge it and give MC's master trouble over it.
Another point about the story and MC is I don't remember him losing or failing at all. He seems to have endless talent and can do no wrong always succeeding st everything. If the author were to introduce actual challenges where the MC even fails some times, it would increase stakes when it is important, subvert expectations and generally increase the realism and immersion in the story, it can also be motivation for the MC to continue trying.
Furthermore, we don't know the MC's goals, if he even has any. He seems to just Cultivate and risk his life for the fun of it? Without a motive the story can sometimes feel like it lacks direction.
Thirdly, the magic system is convoluted and not we - Temet NosceRoyal Road★★★ 3.0On the plus side the novel manage to eschew some of the common problems with xianixia - most notably the characterization of the protagonist and the people he interacts with has more depth. Unfortunately this depth tends to be relatively limited in each case, coming across more as a 'things the author wants you to know'. Similarly, it doesn't extend to the villains.
Apart from that, the two things I'd note are that combat scenes sometimes seem disconnected entirely in terms of how much time/things that happen during them, and there's a lack of the palpable, meaningful power increases or focus thereof that tend to be so central to xianxia (also a problem with some narrative reasons for the way the sect handles information) to the extent that I'm not actually entirely sure where the cultivation of most of the characters are, or what it means. - Mr. MochiRoyal Road★★★ 2.5You know those free app games that give you a small dopamine hit every time you get loot or a new character?
This story offers the same thing although it lacks the extreme highs and lows. Just a fun story about adventures in a cultivation world. No real “villains” or rivals, a teased romance between characters I feel is utterly contrived, and a vague notion of what the ultimate goal is.
To be concise, this story lacks depth. Think Harry Potter without Voldemort or Slytherin. A fun read, but not a fantastic one. and that’s fine if that’s what you want. But for me, that’s not what cultivation stories are about.
Its about the constant battle between man, the world and the heavens, with man seeking to defy the heavenly limitations. It’s an epic tale, where every step closer changes the man, removing his impurities, his relationships and his wants, for the sake of power.
Here you get the PG version on that. And yeah, seeing a wizard at magic school is fun, but its not Harry desperately learning a spell in order to fend off creatures that use his mothers screams to suck his soul. You feel me?
In all fairness, the sect orphanage backstory was very interesting and novel, and I quite liked how it manifested. The cynical side of me thinks it’s just a
Excuse to have a Quest giver
But I can appreciate flavor text and insight on something I’d normally wouldn’t think of.
Also the dialogue choices are a bit too modern. For example a character POV has them using today’s lingo for a profound statement. Utterly immersion breaking. I’d mention the random beastfolk or the cat boy subplot, but it’s never really explained or expanded upon. Same deal with the MC able to wield lightning. Just never really explained. I thought lightning was a holy element or something?
It’s a kiddie pool cultivation fanfic.
