"Last Among the Stars" is an exceptional piece of space opera storytelling that blends thrilling military sci-fi with genuine character depth and worldbuilding that rivals some of the best in the genre.
From the very first chapter, the story offers a fresh and insightful perspective on humanity's role in a galaxy teetering on the edge of chaos. The framing device (an alien emissary's classified report on human nature) is a brilliant narrative hook that sets the tone for a story that never shies away from both the brutality and brilliance of its subjects. The backdrop is a galaxy torn by war, but at its heart, this is a story about people, specifically Jack Nereus, an ordinary young man thrown into extraordinary circumstances.
Jack’s journey from a nervous recruit to a reluctant leader is deeply compelling. The writing captures the raw fear, idealism, and quiet courage that come with being thrust into combat far too young. His interactions with Eve and the rest of the crew are nuanced, often funny, and sometimes heartbreakingly real. The camaraderie, tension, and occasional mystery surrounding his shipmates feel incredibly grounded, even when the setting is light-years away.
The author has a rare talent for pacing. Exposition is interwoven seamlessly with character moments and gripping action sequences, and the escalating tension (from a recruitment office to a desperate boarding assault) never lets up. The action is intense and cinematic, yet it’s the emotional stakes that really stay with you. The moment when Jack steps into a literal kill box and chooses to fight on anyway? Absolutely gut-wrenching and inspiring.
Perhaps most impressively, "Last Among the Stars" doesn’t lose itself in clichés. The aliens feel alien, the politics are messy, and the heroism is hard-won and costly. It’s not just a story about war, but about finding purpose, trust, and meaning amid destruction.
Highly recommended for fans of The Expanse, Battlestar Galactica, and Mass Effect. If you’r
