Labyrinth of Shadows lives up to its name!
It is a tight paranoid read that is a tense and thrilling mystery and I can't wait to see how it keeps unfolding!
Style Score: The negatives out of the way first, the author is still finding their feet with their own writing style and sometimes this shows in a bit too much show dont tell. However, they are very receptive to feedback and are actively improving the prose as they go.
Character Score: Akio is still a bit of a mystery at this point. He is determined and resilient but we are still learning his backstory and character. So far he is a bit of a blank slate but that makes sense since his memories have been wiped!
Story Score: Here is where LoS shines. The premise is fantastic and the writing and plotting are tight and claustrophobic. Every chapter we are left with more questions and more fear about what is going to happen to our MC. Story crumbs are being fed to us at the same time as the MC and it makes for a paranoid reading experience as you don't know who to trust or even if you can trust the MC's own perspectives. Every chapter leads you to wanting to read more and find out what has happened.
