Description

IMPORTANT: I will be stubbing this novel by the end of Sept 2025 to comply with the terms of Kindle Unlimited. It is published under the same title and the author is Peter Lok.

On the fog-shrouded slopes of Mount Kumotawa, a sacred shrine stands guard against an ancient evil. Five hundred years ago, Princess Chikako and her samurai defeated marauding oni here. Legends abound about yokai on this mountain to the present day, and the imperial family continues their vigil.

Yuriko, a former special forces operator turned convenience store manager, knows her job isn’t just about sales and inventory. She finds herself thrust into a world of supernatural intrigue when a mysterious cat leads her onto the slopes of Mount Kumotawa, rising behind the store. Teamed up with her fellow ex-special forces colleague Travis and the stalwart policeman Goro, she investigates mysterious incidents on the mountain for the Imperial Management Agency.

As the veil between worlds begins to fray, a malevolent god’s return looms, his sinister minions sowing chaos. At Odewara High School, a spirited band of teenagers—Chiyo, Ayako, Karen, and Sarah, members of the Gun Girls Auxiliary—rise to the challenge, guided by Yuriko's mentorship. But even their courage may not be enough.

Other allies, including the Sword Princess, arrive to help as the crisis develops. In a showdown against the forces of darkness, these heroes must stand together to prevent the cataclysmic convergence of worlds. With courage, sacrifice, and friendship, they embark on a journey that will test their limits and determine the fate of the world.

This novel incorporated my love for Japanese anime and manga but with more realism. My intended audience is readers who like urban fantasy, a Japanese setting, and anime/manga. People who like X-files or Supernatural, 13 Hours, and anime like Otherworld Picnic and GATE should like this, too.

What if there were a secret joint Japanese-American operation guarding portals to other worlds? That's the premise behind Kumotawa Confluence.
This is not LitRPG - it's a "low fantasy" set in Japan;  my first impression was that it was a bit like a supernatural analogue to Ghost in the Shell. There's a loving rendering of Japan including a carefully thought out alternate history.
In fact, the setting is almost the main character of the story itself. The shrine, the mountains the Super Quickly convenience story, even the fog and mist are all described with lush detail giving the story a tactile sense of reality. Though of course there is a cast of interesting characters, each with their own history and relationships.
If you are looking for action, you will find it in this story. In just the first few chapters there are suspenseful and well choreographed action scenes that manage to blend supernatural horror with detailed and (I presume) acurate depictions of special ops weapons and tactics. To me both of these are equally exotic.
However, I would classify the Kumotawa Confluence as a slow burn. The chapters are well written but, at least so far, they are taking their time at setting the stage. It's interesting and I'm becoming invested in the story but I still don't have a clear idea of who the antagonist is or even which of the characters so far is going to be the primary protagonist. This is not a bad thing! It's just that the story has it's own pace and it seems perhaps a little more measured than most on Royal Road.
Long story short - if you are looking for a story that expertly blends Japanese mythology with special ops action in a unique and well realized setting, then this is your story. You're going to love it.
