- Jesters GhostRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I have noticed a recent trend for many authors to open a new story with an infodump explaining all the core motivations of the MC and the setting's key features.
Thankfully, Kleggt is a better writer than that, setting the tone of the story and what to expect from the MC quickly with only hints and allusions to the deeper mysteries.
The system apocalypse also seems to have more thought put into it than some others, and there's a lot of room for revelations and reversals from what our protagonist is originally told. The system and the protagonists choices within it manage to feel somewhat fresh, at least within the confines of a litRPG system apocalypse that is.
The MC is morally ambiguous but intelligent, and so far her choices seem reasonable or at least understandable. There's clearly a lot of back story to come out, but the early scenes will tell you very quickly whether you'll like her or not. As you can tell from this review, she clicked for me, but your mileage may vary. I'm looking forward to the potential development of her skills and abilities - it's not often you see a character built around psychological warfare in an action story, a neat trick that again speaks highly of the author's abilities.
I have no complaints on the quality of the prose either. Definitely well above average, not too wordy nor too hurried, with no glaring typos or errors.
Overall, a very solid start. Very few stories have clicked for me so quickly as this one did, so I expect great things. - noon foxgloveRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Kleggt is a master of setting a scene. This story opens with a short scene of the main character arriving at a diner and interacting with the patrons there, and every character feels alive and fleshed out from the moment they appear. The main character in particular, as this is a first-person narrative so far, feels alive with real motivations and a history we know very little about at this point. But the character knows about her history, and it shows in the way she approaches challenges and, of course, the onset of the apocalypse.
As for the setting itself, it is a system apocalypse story with LitRPG elements. That's a pretty generic description, but it also leaves a lot open for later development. I have a feeling that everything is not as it appears...not least because the nature of the apocalypse is so far only described by one character that we have no reason to trust beyond "it hasn't given us a reason to distrust it".
If you're coming from Kleggt's previous story, Built Different, this story is very unlike that one in a lot of ways, but it has some similarities, in particular: a main character whose past is murky from the audience and other characters' perspectives, brutal descriptions of fights and damage, and of course, snark and sarcasm.
All in all, I think that Killing Blow is a great story with a lot of potential, and I am extremely excited to see where it goes next.
