- SEBscribeRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5A simple and straightforward adventure story about martial prowess. Sometimes a bit all over the place and maybe even too simple, yet endearing in where it is going. If you're into swords, this is your story.
Style: Mostly dialogue driven, it could use a bit more vivid descriptions of actions, but is doing well enough on this front. The worldbuilding tends to be a bit too all over the place and at the same time has no details and can come across as bland. Outside that, everything is perfectly fine and fits the formula.
Story: To the point I read, it lacks a bit of an overarching plot, but that is fine enough. After a quick introduction to the world and background, the story quickly becomes a travel-piece where Katsuo and Taka run into various challenges one after another that aim to grow the protagonist. Not just as a fighter, but as a person, even though a bit bare-bones at times. I'm seeing forward to see new and creative challenges in the future.
Grammar: Does exactly what it is supposed to do. Only minor note would be that dialogue is sometimes split in two paragraphs where it should be in the same and that can make it hard to know if the speaker has changed. But not too hard.
Characters: Katsuo just works. He is your teenage protagonist, out to conquer the world of martial arts with a slightly older and more experienced mentor at his side. He's not in an overpowered spot at the beginning, but a typically gifted fighter that is going places in no times. His struggles are what makes the story and I am stoked to see how the relations to the rest of the cast and the characters themselves are going to develop. - drechenauxRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The story follows the tale of a young apprentice with only one goal- to master the blade. And that he does while travelling with his teacher to faraway places in the hopes of obtaining greater skill with his sword and to master the 8 techniques.
Style: I would say is slightly simplistic, and might need some polish but there is nothing that is very wrong or bad about it. I would describe it as 'serviceable' and it doesn't detract from the story.
Grammar: I couldn't really catch any major errors or issues. so there's nothing that would take away from your enjoyment of the story.
Story: The story follows an expected path, though one thing that I do greatly appreciate is that extreme power is not just handed over to our protagonist, but he fails. He fails quite a bit- which shows there is room for growth and this isn't your typical 'Overpowered Main Character' kind of story, but there kind where there is room for true progression.
Character: the characters are all likeable and have traits that really make them memorable, even when they're only 'on screen' for a few lines.
Overall I think this is the promising start to a story about a young boy's journey to master the blade.
