His new job might kill him. But if he quits, he can’t keep his new magic artifact.
Matteo lives on the back of a giant turtle, one of several kaiju that roam the land. It's the only place safe from the hordes of monsters roaming the forest below. Everything from goblins to grasshoppers make living on the ground deadly.
Matteo's new job is to kill those monsters in the giant turtle’s path, pest control for their home kaiju. He just has to survive the training. Unfortunately for him, the other recruits hate him, the mortality rate for recruits is sky high, and every outing involves fighting monsters that can easily kill him.
He has help from his squad and the magical artifacts they were all given. The goddess creates random artifacts with esoteric effects. Matteo needs to figure out how to use his artifact and help his squad do the same. It’s the only way he is getting out of this alive.
Slow progression story, MC isn’t OP, magical military, unique magic system, mysterious political plots, minor swearing, some gore, no harem, no sex

- CatVIRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This fiction makes you wonder.... no.. Really!
Long:
Grammar: The chapter is written pretty well and there ain't any grammatical errors. The sentences are clear and stuff, and they get the point across without any confusion.
Story and Style: "Kaiju City: Tartaruga Town" is a super interesting story that has got all kinds of cool stuff like fantasy, adventure, and personal struggles. The writer does a good job of building up tension and making us want to know more. The chapter starts off with Matteo almost getting killed by a spooky horse and ends with him being late for his girlfriend's place. The whole idea of a city on a giant turtle shell and the magic artifacts and kaiju stuff make the story really unique.
The writing style is descriptive and makes you feel like you're right there in the scene. The author gives us lots of details that let us imagine everything happening. The pace of the story is just right, mixing action with moments where we get to know what Matteo is thinking. We can see Matteo's character really well and see how determined he is to overcome his disability through his art.
Characters: The characters in this chapter are fleshed out and easy to relate to. Matteo is the main guy, and we feel bad for him because he lost his arm. But he doesn't let that stop him, he keeps on working hard. We can see that in his interactions with Emmanuel and the district chief. There are other characters too, like the Wardens who are being reckless and Matteo's girlfriend Eleni. They all add depth and make us curious about what's gonna happen next.
All in All: "Kaiju City: Tartaruga Town" is a cool chapter that mixes fantasy and real-life stuff really well. The story is interesting, the writing is good, and the characters are relatable. It makes us excited to see what happens to Matteo in the rest of the story. - JCMA_Just_Call_Me_AuntyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I quickly knew that this book was gonna be 1 of my favorites!
2 minutes on a giant Kaiju Turtle named Tartaruga (which I still call Tortuga (get it? cause it's a tortoise)) We meet Matteo.
The classic down on his luck, starving artist MC.
Even as we watch these first moments fate is rubbing his nose in his failure. The author immediately starts dropping more fate threads to suck you in, before you know it you're emotionally invested and looking to slap some bit....uh a people, who could have been kinder... Anyway bullet dodged and unto greater plots!
I will not discuss Gojira, you will have to experience the sacrilege yourself. Poor Jiji but I loved every minute of it anyway!
There's a lot of action, friendship, devastation, tragedies and a little hint of romance!
The world building is fantastic and I can see a ton of fan fics or spin offs being spawned. PM me I will read them all lol!
I came back to add well written Giant Kaiju beats Giant Robots any day... but decided not to be that person , even if I'm right!
Tldr;
Love giant monsters? Super powers? Weak Punk to OP MC? Then binge like crazy 2 books completed!! - bnazRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Really enjoyable concept. Living on the back of a huge monster and all that entails. Story isn't profound in terms of motivations or stakes. More your every day individual just trying to live their life. Slow burn in terms of progression. Excited to see where this goes. Also excited to see some people get what they deserve.
- goldensquirbyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0We're introduced to Matteo, a struggling one-armed artist trying to make ends meet. The author does a fantastic job at getting the reader endeared to him. Most importantly, by showing his struggles and failures as an artist. We're introduced to Matteo at his lowest point, and throughout the first few chapters, we see him start to claw his way back up. I love MCs that struggle and work their way up. Matteo himself, as well as his interactions with others characters are grounded and believable.
Where the story really shines for me is the world. Humanity lives in densly packed cities a top roaming kaiju as monsters roam the surface. The author does a wonderful job at making Tartaruga feel like a lived in location. Mostly through the little details such as descriptions of the restauraunts and food, and the sprinkle of gossip and small-town politics. The world exists, lives, and breathes without the MC and I found myself wanting to learn more about the world as a whole.
The story is litrpg but so far, doesn't bog itself down explaining stats and mechanics. We have artifacts that provide their wielders with special abilities, and depending on a user's aptitude, they are better suited to wielding certain artifacts as opposed to others. I like this approach to the Litrpg format. The system still feels grounded to the world without feeling too "game-y." Which I understand is the appeal of the genre, but I've never been a big fan of litrpgs in general for that reason.
I've decided to follow this project to its completion. I love what I've read so far and am eager to read more! Also giant turtles are cool. - keeganashleyliveRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Honestly, this was a five out of five stars in all areas read for me. I thought about it, and I really don't feel I can dock the story in any of the above categories.
Let's start with the main character---this is where I feel the author shines the most. Matteo is any extremely relatable and likable character who I'd likely follow through an entire Sunday trek through the wood just to see what he was up to, and this kind of reader loyalty isn't an accident. He's well-crafted and thought out. We instantly "fall in love" with him because he's the underdog (handicap, life looking a little bleak, relationship issues, starving artist, good guy---all these factor conglomerate to make us root for him without question). Insert this epic character into a larger-than-life world with really interesting elements and you get a kick-ass story. I was enthralled, and I feel the author is really going places with the introduction to magic and artifacts; it's a very interesting environment.
There were no glaring grammatical errors in the text that stuck out to me. In fact, I found the author's style to be excellent and flowing.
I'd highly recommend this story. Well done!! - GheldanRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This story is really well done.
The main character is interesting, has a good backstory, and at no point ever feels invincible. None of the characters do. In fact I think that is my favorite thing about this serial is how much I end up worrying about all the characters. Will they make it?
So yeah I know this is short but I've really enjoyed this novel and you should give it a try. - Slightly_MorbidRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0A bit hit and miss this one. The concept is cool with people living on the back of a giant Kaiju. Add a sprinkle of intra-Kaju warfare and political intrigues, and random upgradeable superpowers and we're off. This book wins on a factor of cool.
It doesn't really win on the main character. While he starts of as mature and likeable, he deteriorates as the book goes on. Getting more emotional, questioning everyone above him in hierarchy, demanding to be in meetings while having almost no experience, coming up with half-assed plans only saved by plot armour.
Also...
The main character is also somewhat greedy, sneaking valuable treasure items for himself without confirming with anyone in charge. Also quite irresponsible. He plunders the safe of the wealthiest man of the city, just takes what he himself needs (again without checking with anyone in charge) and drops the safe with immense wealth and treasures at the feet of two random guards, even when knowing plenty of them have been traitors.
There's also a plot holes and consequences of actions not really thought through, but as the book is written by The Rule of Cool, I can accept this. The book is really much about wishfulfillment and it's good at that. Who doesn't dream about having the coolest magic and become more and more awesome?
It is in many way plain YA-fare. And it works well as that. - Melrid_JomRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Reviewed at Book 2, Chapter 50.
The story flows nicely and the power system is well done. The main character develops themselves and is shown to struggle with their trials, not just breeze through.
The author shows the varying cultures well and world-building is done organically. Lots of cool locations and groups are displayed and it seems that will continue in the future.
I feel the dialogue between characters can be a bit choppy but other characters views and points are shown. The MC is not always right nor the smartest person in the room. - EmpireofTrustRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Great fun adventure with trainees getting thrown straight into the wood chipper.
A little too much info dumping for my tastes in places but considering the world created by the author I can understand the wish to share it with their readers to get to the good stuff.
Intrigue, acting with too little information at speed under deadly pressure, an OP MC developing and Kaiju!
All the good fun things as spells fling, shields bounce and slavering monsters enlarged way beyond reasonable sizes. - MagikerRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0I admit it's early for a review. So many stories start strong then peter out or just go right off the rails. But at this point, I feel comfortable enough to put a favorite recommendation on this delightful beginning of a story.
Main character: likeable. Not over powered. Seems balanced and relatable. I love the direction of his abilities.
Side characters: let's be honest, it's way too early to tell.
Plot: I'm not sure I believe the main character's motivation in the sudden choice of vocation. That could use some work. But it's kinda the premise of the story so not a shock either.
World: I love it. Its a contained environment by nature, so I hope we eventually get some serious detail. The start is compelling anyway.
Technical: grammar and spelling are good. Pacing seems in point.
Give it a try.
Update: book 2 gets tougher to like. MC is a regular Gary Stu. Oh well.
