- Mano MenaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The clearest strength I can see is the descriptive power. The narration is so detailed that it feels like watching a movie. It’s about a group of teenagers who, if this were real life, would make you want to dunk their heads underwater. Maybe their lives are too comfortable, so they go looking for challenges?
But we can’t really blame them. It’s like in real life when people go climbing mountains and end up needing rescue teams because they can’t make it back down. Reading this novel gave me the exact same feeling as watching news like that—except with stronger emotions, because this isn’t just a mountain. It’s a forbidden island.
And I kept thinking to myself, are we really going to spend taxpayer money rescuing hot-headed teenagers like this?
In the early chapters, when the characters are being introduced, I think the author did their best to present them fully. Still, I didn’t feel deeply attached to them yet. Maybe that will improve as I read further.
I’ll say it again—the descriptions are very detailed and well done. But it wasn’t until Chapter 10 that I truly felt, “Okay, this is Jurassic Rescue.”
Whatever happened in Chapter 9, you’ll have to read it yourself. But in Chapter 10, that’s when it finally started to feel genuinely interesting to me. Watching Emilia and Maria struggle to survive against something we can more or less guess was happening took some time before it fully pulled me in.
Now I’m hoping the rescue operation will be written in a compelling way—showing just how necessary it is to mobilize so many people to save just two individuals who entered a place that everyone clearly said was off-limits. - S.N. KeirsteadRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This almost feels like a short pilot for a standalone Jurassic Park story! Each of the main characters has a strong a voice in their narration as well as their own personality and goals. It makes their meeting all the more satisfying to see the story come together.
Jurassic Rescue has everything you'd want in fan fiction on this source material. Science/Biology. Interesting. Oh, and one more thing. Dinosaurs. Don't worry, they're here and they do exactly what you'd expect.
If you like Jurassic Park, this is a definite recommend. It's short too, so there's not much committment to read it from start to finish. - MeelonahRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The first chapter of every story holds a vital strength: the power to attract readers and compel them to continue. You have done a great job in this first chapter by including only necessary details and deleting what wasn't needed. Your choice of words and the flow of the plot makes perfect sense.
Character Descriptions & Personality
Everything about the character Maria—from the black boots and the oversized hoodie to the frizzy ponytail and the paperback sticking out of her bag—is a smooth description. It allows the reader to immediately form a vivid mental picture.
Additionally, the phrase "the snug expression of someone who believed the world was her oyster" is a classic, idiomatic way of describing Cassy’s personality. The tension you’ve built between Cassy and Maria in Chapter 2 successfully spikes the reader's curiosity.
Areas for Refinement
Word Choice in Chapter 4: The phrase "patchy remains of a once-manicured lawn" feels a little wordy. Since "remains" usually implies something dead or static and a lawn is still growing, you might use a word that suggests a struggle between the old grass and the new weeds.
Revision Idea: "The strangled stretches of a once-manicured lawn".
Technical Notes: Aside from a few minor phrase-checks, keep an eye on punctuation throughout.
Final Thoughts
Overall, the story delivers great adventure vibes. I am personally very interested in Maria’s character.
Nice work! - J. L. JonesRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5As of right now, with the current amount of chapters, the author is doing really well building dread with the island and its inhabitants. The story starts off like any regular last adventure with a group of friends before parting ways to begin their adult lives. However, unlike the usual slasher or world-ending event, we are given clues to another threat altogether: dinosaurs. Now, when I first read JP back in school, it gripped me and I can say that this story will grip you if you like JP and a slow reveal to dinosaurs.
The characters themselves have yet to fully come into their own as the story is still new and setting up the tension, which is done eloquently. The plot so far has added two mysteries to keep you guessing whether things will take that drastic turn we are used to in horror books. Once the author has produced more chapters and gets into the meat of the book, I will come back to give a full-fledged review but so far, its worth the read! - MarkeshRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5From the blurb alone, I could tell this was going to be an interesting read. Maria Sullivan and JJ Muldoon immediately caught my attention. One being trapped, one being a savior. A rescue operation involving dinosaurs? What kind of mysteries will be discovered on the island? I wanted to find out more.
I have read through the first four chapters (the ones currently posted), and I already enjoy the writing style. It feels close to a published novel. The descriptions of Maria, Sandra, Cassy, and even the yacht itself are vivid and easy to picture. Visual clarity like this is hard to pull off, and the author does it well.
In the second chapter we begin to see internal conflicts between the characters, which I think will pay off heavily once the crew is stranded on Isla Nublar. Each chapter makes me want to click into the next, which is always a good sign.
Style: This story uses the Jurassic Park universe as its foundation, and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it. It feels respectful to the source material while still telling its own story.
Story: The plot development is solid, though a bit slow at times. That said, it seems intentional, as the author is building emotional investment in Maria and the rest of the crew before things escalate.
Grammar: The writing is clean and flows well, making it easy to keep reading without getting pulled out by too many technical issues.
Character: The cast is diverse, and each character has their own distinct personality. I can already see how their differences are going to create tension and drama in later chapters.
All in all, I am looking forward to seeing where this goes. The first four chapters have me invested in Maria and what’s about to happen on Isla Nublar.
Keep up the good work! - NihilunRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The prose is really smooth—like it's binge-worthy without being boring. Maria is such a mood. That girl did NOT come on this vacation and honestly? Same. Every time someone ignored her obvious red flag radar I was screaming. The fact that she's just trying to survive her "last adventure" with people she barely puts up with and then SURPRISE, actual dinosaurs might still be alive? Yeah I'd just pass away.
Cassy is just hateable. Like you KNOW she's gonna go and get someone killed with her main character syndrome. But Emilia surprised me?? I thought she'd just be mean girl #2 but she's actually... interesting? The part where she stays behind with Maria at the Visitor Center while the others go hike off to certain death? That was different.
The mood in chapter 3 is just chef's kiss. The destroyed Visitor Center, the dead bodies, the jungle reclaiming everything. You can just see it. And then that ending to chapter 5 with them trapped in the dark while something scratches at the walls?? Hell no. Wow, what a cliffhanger!
If you like Adventure Horror with a little Sci fi mixed in, springle around, and you like the basic fiction that this story is based on, then this is for you. Grab it and read it! - PurpleharpRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The author is a clear fan of the Jurassic Park franchise, and you can feel their passion throughout their writing. I find myself torn on this story because while I enjoy it, there is something off about it for me. (Sorry, Morbid.)
The premise starts out fairly simple: rich kids partying and getting into trouble. The snark in the writing is palpable, and anyone who has been an outsider in high school can easily understand Maria's feelings. I also appreciate the continuation of the Muldoon line and the fire that drives JJ.
Style: There is nothing to comment on the author's writing style. It flows freely and carries the story on to the next moment. The length of the paragraphs and sentences is just right, without getting too long or too short. There are a few times in the story where the writing style jumps from third-person limited to third-person objective. The way something is described cuts from your typical third-person reading experience, to suddenly feeling like you're reading a script giving acting directions on how your character feels about something.
Story: The story is great and a fairly easy-to-appreciate Jurassic Park premise. People with too much money and too little common sense are a story old as time when it comes to the JP franchise, and the author does an excellent job continuing that trope.
Grammar: The author has a clear understanding of grammar. There are a few examples of consistency errors (such as calling the MC Marai instead of Maria), but overall, they have a clear and understandable grasp of the English language.
Character: The characters outside of Maria, Emilia, and JJ feel a little flat. Maria and Emilia show multiple sides of themselves, and JJ shows his passion to live up to his father's memory. But if you asked me to describe anything about Jake, Sandra, Clint, or Cassy? I'd be hard-pressed to give you much of anything other than basic high-school persona tropes.
Overall: Overall, I appreciate the story being told. I appreciate the a - RyukiroRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Complete title: An adrenaline-fueled, nostalgic dive into the terror of Isla Nublar
This novel is a must-read for anyone who loves survival thrillers and the tense, claustrophobic atmosphere of abandoned parks. The author does a fantastic job of dividing the narrative into two distinct but complementary phases.
Atmosphere and Tension: The first half of the story follows a group of teenagers trapped in the ruins of the original Visitor Center. The psychological horror experienced by Maria and Emilia as they hide in the dark, listening to the sounds of unknown predators scraping against the walls, is superbly written and really keeps you on the edge of your seat. The descriptions of nature reclaiming the island are vivid and unsettling.
Action and Tactics: The introduction of JJ Muldoon (a fantastic callback to the original lore) and the Soaring Star Rescue team shifts the story into high gear, turning it into a tight action-thriller. The contrast between the helplessness of the kids and the lethal professionalism of characters like Little Bear and Loni is extremely satisfying to read.
Conclusion: The combat scenes, especially the clash with the raptors and the large dinosaur in the maintenance yard, are highly visual and frantic.
An excellent, fast-paced read that never drops the ball. I can't wait to read how the rescue team tackles the search for the other survivors! - Daniel CortaRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Morbid Writer offers a thrilling, fast-paced return to Crichton's imaginary world.
Jurassic Rescue draws on tactics familiar to Crichton's fans. Tensions between characters melt (or, sometimes, intensify) when they face primordial peril. The author drops us into the action fast, taking just enough time to acclimate us to the setting. The prose, clean and sharp, never gets between the reader and the horrors lurking in Isla Nublar.
Some fans might find that this story leaves them hungry for a little more meat. The speculative side of Crichton's fiction is noticeably absent (at least in the first nine chapters). That being said, the choice feels justified. The characters aren't Noble Prize winners, but high school graduates. In truth, it feels refreshing to see non-experts come face-to-face with these scaly, prehistoric dangers.
As this story grows, I hope the characters grow with it. For now, they remain straightforward types, albeit eloquently executed types. As the story stands, it works well; but I think a truly satisfying climax will depend on the audience developing a little more attachment to the protagonists. Or, alternatively, perhaps a little more antipathy towards them. Will we pray fervently for them to make it out alive? Or will we shudder as we see them pay the ultimate price for their hubris? Only time will tell.
My favorite aspect of Jurassic Rescue is the love it shows for the subtle impression, the little details of plastic armrests clicking, badly labeled keys, cheap storage shelves. It makes for a satisfying blend of atmospheres. The carnivorous Lost World collides with the cheaply manufactured structures of modernity.
All these details take center stage because the prose is easily digestible. Every sentence goes down smooth. The author put in the effort: you can tell because their labors are invisible.
Read this story. The writer knows their craft. - cmmschottRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I was hooked from the beginning, I felt that the character seemed fresh and relatable. They avoided a lot of the, this is stupid what are they doing, that some of the newer Jurassic World installment have fallen into.
The story feels refreshing and the ideas blend together well. I personally did not love some of the stylistic choices but that is just a personal nitpick and does draw back from what this book does as a story. I never felt bored that I was just reading a story that has already been told.
The environment in this story also feels alive which I feel is important when writing a Jurassic book. Readers need to feel as if they don’t know what’s around the corner if it’s going to be something dangerous or beautiful. This story did that for me which I appreciated.
I would recommend this to anyone who loved the classic tale and is looking for a more modern spin. It really answered the question of what a Jurassic event would look like in today’s current day and age. I like the. Choice of the Yacht is adds a nice dynamic that I appreciated when reading this story.
