Journey Through the Underdark - Eric EarthScorn Book 1
Community Rating
Description
Eric wanted to be a barkeep, like his father. He wanted only to run the inn and enjoy the small slice of life that he had. He didn't dream of adventure or power, his dreams were more modest and humble.
Those dreams were never to be. As the bastard son of Lord EarthScorn, he had a Knack, and that meant he would have to be trained as a wizard for the council. He would have to defend the kingdom from the evils of the outer world. Magic came with benefits; power, long life, money. But Eric didn't want any of that. His time in the magical academy only reinforced his views of magic and the kingdom. He didn't want to fight for old men who had lived far longer then they should. He didn't want to be relegated to far-flung outposts where he would protect those same men. But the alternative was potentially worse, fleeing from the wars, fleeing from his home, and escaping through the most dangerous place in the kingdom.

- Coolcid78Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0If you have read any of alstonsleet’s stories then this one is just as good.
as of chapter 31, the story has been great the MC is well rounded and funny, he’s a little impulsive and has the wounded lust about him when it comes to magic. But that’s understandable as a 14 year old with magic, and he learns from his mistakes
after this last chapter I have to say I really can’t wait to see more of it and the world at large as the MC has more or less gained his freedom and is starting to see more of the world and meat new people - TDanielRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The reason I keep trawling through this website is for stories like this.
Of course it’s early stages yet, but knowing some of your other work it’s unlikely I will be put off, as you don’t seem to go infor all the crutches and poorly wielded tropes. I have actually not been annoyed, vexed or disbelieving of any part of the story so far, thank you.
Absolutely loved it, thank you sincerely for your artistry. - chazziRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Firstly this story is set up to be a book, the chapters were probably of sufficient length for a book (didn't count words).
The grammer was pretty decent, did not notice anything to break the flow.
While there was decent word building, it felt a little blasé, I guess it felt like it was lacking depth.
The story/plot feels a little bit PG-13 rating, which kinda relates the previous point. The story only sees a smidgeon more depth in the last one or two chapters.
The magic system is interesting. The MC does some intersting stuff with it, though I will admit it kinda becomes the answer to every problem.
The MC himself is reasonable likeable, he does not appear to overally dumb (maybe a bit naive about the world) and can make mistakes.
***Spoilers Below******
The anlog for north korea (seems like), was a little weak. The situation described in the last two chapters would probably indicate that the "kingdom" sould be way worse off than was described earlier in the book.
The "kingdom" you describe earlier was probably better than most medieval kingdoms in history. Though magic is a consideration.
You mentioned in the book that enemy forces would only kill of "kingdom" wizards but leave the normal troops alone, so why wouldn't "kingdom" not bother to put wizards on the frontline at all. Surely they should be training a secret army of competent wizards, rather than wasting so many resources (i.e. wizards).
Also it mentioned early on that mind magic exists so why should the MC be required to visit the underdark again? I get its a plot hook but it could be explained better.
In fact it would seem likely that mind mages would be around everywhere to fact check and verify truth. Even if they might not exist in the "kingdom". They already have truth stones so it not like corrupt nobles would have a reason to get rid of one but not the other.

I enjoyed the book mainly for premise, magic system, characters. Thank you author. - dnajesterRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This story is a story that really delivers. I eagerly await to see what happens next. This review has been edited from the original when the story was only at chapter 6.
Style: I can see an improvement of style from the author's first book. The story seems to flow better and the conversations are not nearly as stilted. (This holds true although the author still has need to make more dialogue. To truely practice this.)
Story: so far I haven't seen much deviation from standard thems but atleast the MC isn't a Gary Sue of OP proportions. I can see the story getting better as the chapters come out and the world building is unique enough to be interesting. (I love the world building and the fact that our MC come from some sort of

)
Grammer: Impeccable much better than I could ever hope to achieve. (Some minor errors like missing letters or words here and there nothing that retracts from the enjoyment of the story.)
Character: I have already covered most of this earlier in the review but the people seem to have distinct personalities. Conversations are a little short but writing conversation takes a lot of practice. - sevensavethepostRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Right from the beginning, there's really interesting world-building and a unique magic system. The author has the innate ability to blend whimsy with grit, never letting the subject matter get too heavy but also not staying away from harsh realities that make the setting more believable.
If I had a criticism, (or maybe more of a pet peeve specific to Alston's writing), it's that he has a tendency to end his Arcs with very little fanfare. For example, the culmination of Journey through the Underdarks School life portion is neatly resolved in under 100 words.
But lack of payoffs aside, the rest of the story is engaging and some of the best RR has to offer. - JMcIRoyal Road★ 0.5So I read the full book on Amazon.
If you read the synopsis the premise is ok but the more the world is revealed the less I want to continue. Everything is empty shallow cruelty and apathy and the starting point was the establishment that women are pretty much cattle that are regularly raped by the nobility. The introduction of the protagonist is literally the man who raped his mother to sure him conscripting him and heading off to rape her again. This is how the story starts!
It's the typical lazy writing of a poor author and effects anything that the author makes for me.
