Description

As a precocious child, Janus struggles with integrating his two identities and concealing his extraordinary nature while he is driven to understand the origins of this society. The creeping tendrils of a dark web of technological control loom, with mysterious 'Tecka' figures that horde knowledge and maintain the advanced infrastructure through means indistinguishable from magic.

    Quick review.  Posting again as my first one was lost because I use a VPN. Really frustrating.
    I've followed this author under a different name and fiction site.  He's written many stories there,  I'm guessing he doesn't want to associate this account with that work and that genre so I won't mention the name... but he's just letting new readers know this guy was one of the more popular writers on that site,  he's good! Got me to make a royal road account finally.
    OK the review (thank goodness i wrote this in discord first,  lol):
    This opening immediately pulled me in with its intriguing premise of a man seemingly reborn into a new life with memories intact. Right away, the author crafts a palpable sense of disorientation and mystery as Janus emerges into this unfamiliar world. Descriptions are vivid, with visceral details like "searing his chest" as he inhales his first breath. We feel immersed in Janus' perspective.
    The pacing moves swiftly as Janus grows from newborn to child, peppered with fascinating hints about the technology and customs of this society. It's clearly an advanced civilization, yet also pre-industrial in odd ways. This gap between Janus' expectations and reality amplifies the strangeness. Supporting characters like his enthusiastic mother Rose add warmth.
    The narrative voice has a lyrical quality that makes ordinary moments feel magical. When Rose sings young Janus a lullaby, the prose resonates until "each corner of the space humming with her soft, melodic tones." Lovely writing style throughout.
    By Chapter 2, the stakes heighten as Janus has an emotional reckoning with mistakes he may repeat from his past life if he can't form human connections. We see beneath his rational exterior to insecurities, rendered poignantly. The mysterious Tecka amp up the intrigue.
