- J. S. KaaronRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5After looking at the synopsis, reading the tags, and seeing this was only a few pages, I thought why not? And Inalienable Rights delivered. It was a short comedy sci-fi in every sense. It's lawyers in space! Which is not an itch I thought I had, but this story scratched it all the same.
Story: The story is fun as it follows human lawyers representing alien agents and engrossing shenanigans ensue. There are funny twists and turns and the plot ended up as the strongest portion of the story for me.
Style: The style is light and fits the comedic atmosphere. There are no paragraphs of detail or deep waxing explanations, and the story for the most part does not need it. The writing has a fast fluid pace and it works.
Grammar: Besides the occasional small typo here and there, the grammar is good.
Characters: the two main attorneys are a interesting duo with a straight man and wise guy. And they make a good pairing to enhance the situational comedy when discussing the absurdities of their situation with the aliens. The real problem with the characterization is that there is not enough of it especially for characters besides the main attorney duo. And from what I have read of the sequel, which I still have not finished due to pesky things like work getting in the way, more characterization is out there.
So if you're looking for a sci-fi comedy series? Then check this story out.
