- Wo7fRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0An enjoyable story, the world building from the beginning is rich and varied. Clearly a great deal of thought has gone into crafting this fantastic world with characters that have great depth and potential.
there are some grammatical errors which detract from the overall experience however my overall experience is very positive.
great story. - starburst98Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story has a great balance between action and flowery description, making it the best of both worlds of flowery xianxia and action. It really makes the various techniques feel extremely powerful rather than full of hot air. Also, unlike many xianxia the main characters are not sociopaths and karma is both talked about and followed, with the bad guys being more sneaky than blatant so far.
- CKJ5Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Story 5/5: Immortal Foundations is a martial arts progression story. It is actually the first pure progression story I have reviewed, so I was excited to get some experience with the genre. One thing that impressed me was the author’s detailed work with Qi control and how it relates to his work. After a lengthy prologue introduces some awesome themes, we meet Fan Zhong just before his father sends him to train with his older brother. I immediately had flashbacks to the many Jet Li, Jackie Chan, etc flicks I repeatedly watched as a teen, so needless to say, the setup clicked with me.
Style 5/5: I love the style of Immortal Foundations. I am a sucker for a good mood-setting opening to a chapter, and the author delivers this often. At times the prose is almost poetic but not purple.
Grammar 4.5/5: There are a few issues, especially in the earlier chapters. I think looking over the earlier chapters again would be a good move because the later chapters are written quite well, but with that said, I never felt as if I didn’t understand what the author was trying to convey.
Character 5/5: The relationship in Fan Zhong’s family is done nicely, especially between the two brothers, who find themselves not only in the role of younger and older brother but also student and teacher. The dynamics are brilliant, and I enjoyed their interactions as they traversed their roles tremendously. Of course, the father and other siblings are also well done.
Overall 5/5: I had a blast with Immortal Foundations, and as I said earlier, it reminded me of early kung-fu that I wish I could have had more time with than the movies allowed. I also enjoyed seeing the author’s progression as a writer and can’t wait to see what happens next. - randomranterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a pretty great story. You can tell that the author spent some time fleshing out the world.
The story itself is slow, deliberate and flowery. Sometimes it reads like a memoir of our protaganist Fan Zhong.
There are many info dumps, especially near the beginning that might cause casual readers to drop it. So I'm cautioning you in advance.
It is a xianxia scale story, so obviously even small territories are millions of kilometers in area. The destruction even by a Qi Condensation or Foundation Estabilishment is something that cannot be understated. It is ridiculous in its scale (reminds me of Desolate Era) and even when the author does try to convey the effects, my mind frequently fails to imagine it.
The cultivation itself if pretty detailed and flowery at the same time. I especially like that to start your immortal journey you have to be an extraordinary mortal in the first place.
We have just finished the part 1 of the story and will be going from wuxia scale to xianxia in the next part. At least that's what I'm feeling.
The characters are well fleshed out and even small characters have depths and their own quirks. The writing sometimes does feel a bit simple but it is nothing a small amount of edits can't fix.
Some people have called out about skipping the prologue but now that there are so many chapters I think you can safely ignore that advice.
All in all, I'm super glad about the feature (Others may have liked) which allowed me to read this story. - JEPayneRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Story - this is a martial arts progression story, something I didn't have much experience with before coming to rr, but I've seen my fair share since joining. This one feels 'weightier' than most, I think due in part to the prologue. I know it is going to be contentious among some people due to its length, but it really sets the tone well, setting up a sense of scale and some pretty glaring parallels between the main characters in both the pro and maim story. Engaging from the get go!
Style - Though there's quite a few of these sort of stories on rr, where this one really impressed me was the clarity and detail the author was able to use when describing the various techniques, while also achieving a sense of mysticism and aesthetic itch scratching. Some of the scenes playing out in my head were like visual hallucination ASMR!
Grammar - 4 1/2 stars due to some issues in the first few chapters, but it quickly picks up after that. If there's any readers at risk of 'bouncing off' of the first few prologue chapters, stick with it, you won't regret it.
Character - the relationships between the characters are very well done, and while xianxia isn't renowned for being especially character focussed (sort of. It is but mainly through the lense of the cultivation?... you know what I mean) this story bucks the trend to a degree. The relationships between the members of the family are all really well executed, especially the dynamic between the brothers.
All in all, a great read that gets better as you get further into it! - Jack0fheartRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Immortal Foundations is a very traditional xanxia we've all come to know and love. In the beginning, we're presented with the MC, Xing Zheng's, unfortunate fate of being effectively exiled from his clan.
Style score 5/5: I'm a huge fan of xanxia, I find the author's style to be very traditional in that sense. Another important thing to note, is that the author does a very good job of showing and not telling!
Story score 5/5: I love xanxia and Immortal Foundations is no exception. To borrow the words of the synopsis "To live as a mortal is to be brief as a spark but to withstand eternity an unshakeable will is the lowest requirement. To achieve such a lofty goal your roots must be firm and your Dao heart unshakeable so that no one under heaven can deny your immortal foundations!"
Grammar score 5/5: This is my least important rating. A story only needs to be legible for me to read it. Immortal Foundations more than meets this requirement! There are absolutely no jarring mistakes that remove my immersion from the story.
Character score 5/5: The characters are all distinct and unique from one another. Xing Zheng is very stoic in recalling his past at the beginning.
In summary, Immortal Foundations is an interesting xanxia set in a world of cultivators and immortals. I highly recommend it to anyone that enjoys more traditional xanxia! ♥ - TurtleKingRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a well-written xianxa that has elements of what most people like about the genre. Although I don't typically read this sort of story, it is well-written. Opting for third person, very descriptive writing fits well for this type of story. While I feel as though the story fits the main sort of archetype of xianxa stories and isn't completely subverting the genre, from what I have read it doesn't fall into all of the pitfalls and cliches other stories do.
In terms of style, the story follows the stereotypical xainxia setting. Where cultivators run rampant, clans are ominpresent, and reaching the heavens attainable. While I didn't read to far into the story since it isn't soemthing I typically read, I could tell that the progression is done right.
In terms of grammar, this story is well written. The varying prose made the writting smooth adn easy to binge. I didn't find any noticable spelling mistakes, so the quality of the writing is good.
The characters are also done well. The seem nuanced and have their own amibtions. The main character is someone you can root for.
Overall, I'd recommend this story to those looking to fill their xianxa itch. - crgmysterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story takes it's time to flesh out the characters and world. This makes a story that feels more "real" than many in this genre. The slow pace is broken up by some truly epic moments. The story spends more time in the mortal realms and each advancement fells like it is something that must truly be earned. Overall, a fun story for any cultivation lover.
- PulgaSenpaiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I think this story has a lot of potential too bad my time is short so I can't read more.
About the story itself you can see that the author has a huge love and care for the story for those who are patient it is really rewarding because everything is being worked meticulously.
I loved the concept of the lazy young master, in the very first chapters we see that he would like to live longer than normal but doesn't feel like working for it, which I find funny because shortly after this scene, with a little effort, he had an incredible use of his abilities.
As I said for those who have patience and want to see a world slowly but perfectly constructed give this book a chance and you won't regret it. - askeriRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0As the title says, this is really good xinxia but it's primary virtue isn't just avoiding all the pitfalls (young master, harem, infinite repetitive leveling up, OP items, ect). The fights are really well done, the world expansive and creative, and the magic system is immersive and diverse. The characters, however, is where the book truly shines. The two characters who sort of share the MC spot combine the best of both worlds- the young hero with a tragic backstory growing into being a leader and the wise old sage. In a world of people who just care about power, they're compelled by family and doing the right thing when their contemporaries struggle to stay on that path.
There's also a level of realism in the story that makes it very compelling. Cultivators are depicted a obsessive perfectionists for the most part rather than just people who happen to win the superpower lottery, with each sect having different motivations for their pursuit of power. They also fight as part of armies and in formations, giving powers a cool way to mix and match in situations other than single combat.
I wish I could do the book full justice but it's really good and you should definitely read.
