Currently following the author's Shard story (which is an excellent story) and decided to read their other works. This is a short, sharp story about the limits of strength and ambition.
No gratuitous power leveling, no tricks, just the exhaustion of desire and meaning. His apology was a perfect ending.

In LOTR, Tolkien described the Ring as preventing aging without giving more life, while he describes natural death as a blessing for mankind.
This short story pays off on both of these ideas and provides a very good action scene into the mix. Greyly also nails the atmosphere in this story, capturing the melancholy, fatigue, and indifference of depression that each of the characters deals with in his or her own way.
This was a uniquely pleasant read and, perhaps paradoxically, a good reminder to make the most of what you have, since more isn't always better.
