Style: The perspectives and shifts between them are consistent and smooth. Dialogue feels natural. The text is a tad verbose at parts, with unnecessary details spelled out, but this doesn't distract much.
Story: Conversation and events flow naturally together. Motivations and actions mostly make sense. The Dreamverse provides some interesting world building.
Adam's future as a merciless cult leader and Zara's war of conquest serves to drive the narrative.
It's worth mentioning a few aspects that didn't make sense: (even within a lit rpg setting)
1) Given how easily exp is obtainable, it's strange that Adam is only level 2 when he sets out. Seems he'd be at least level 4-5 just by hunting rats and small critters. (possible solution: a quick explanation of how Adam reached lvl 2 (and what prevented him from going higher))
2) Despite years of strict training, Adam's starting abilities are surprisingly basic (apart from the dreamchild title). If the only benefit was resisting panic slightly faster, what was the point of all that preparation? (possible solution: explain the advantages Adam's training produced (higher stats for a child?))
3) Just after hectic fight where he and his drone are nearly overwhelmed by enemies attracted by noise, Adam chooses the "Battle Cry" ability. In this forest, shouting loudly strikes me as suicide. (possible solution: explain that "battle cry" has a limited range and can't be heard outside that)
Grammar: Excellent. My need to edit (for grammar reasons) went mostly unfulfilled.
Character: Adam makes for a unusual anti-hero, especially since he is an ordinary powerless child in the real world. The dynamic between his irl family life and Dreamverse is interesting (do his real world parents know about his genocidal otherworld mentor?). No problems here.
Conclusion: - keeganashleyliveRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0…Okay, so, wow. This one is cool. The premise is something we’ve seen before, but it has a really unique twist to it, making the word and story instantly magnetizing. The first chapter (technically called the prologue – don’t skip it!) hooked me, yanking me into the story. I immediately had to know more. And the further I dove into this very dark, LitRPG world, the more I wanted to know. The Dreamverse is captivating in a way that really surprised me. Kudos to the author; the worldbuilding is on-poin,t and it’s such an intriguing and grim (in a good way) world to dive into. It feels epic, like the author is really building this into something on a huge scope---wonderful.
There’s a great mix of stats and narrative for lovers of LitRPGs, myself included. I personally really enjoyed watching the character’s progression as the story unfolds---it feels very satisfying.
The work is well-written, and I didn’t notice any glaring grammatical errors that hindered the story at all. Honestly, the writing really catered to the flow of the story which definitely is the star of the show. You’re not going to miss out on this one. It’s a fabulous read! - CriimsonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is an intriguing and well-crafted piece of writing that draws the reader into a fantastical world of the Dreamverse. The author has created an interesting premise, with the concept of a status screen that can be tailored to one's preferences and a protagonist who has been granted an exceptional title. The description of the Hive Warrior and the Hive Empress is vivid and evocative, creating a sense of danger and foreboding.
The author's skillful use of detail in creating the world of the Dreamverse and the characters that inhabit it is commendable. The concept of the Dreamverse itself is fascinating, and the author has done an excellent job of bringing it to life. Overall, this is a captivating piece of writing that leaves the reader wanting more. The author's talent for world-building and character development is evident, and I would highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys science fiction or fantasy. - SavitrRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I was surprised when starting to read this, it was good, really good. The concept itself is super interesting, I like the idea of someone who travels to a different world when asleep. The execution is also done wonderfully, I like the way this is going and seeing the characters interact. I look forward to reading more.
- SaxifrageRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Amazing book ! I was really impressed by the quality of the writing and especially by the originality of the story. The protagonist is neither good nor bad, he just thinks of himself and his family, it's realistic. I really hope it will continue in this direction. Have fun at reading this. You will not regret your time on this book !
- WritingHatRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Okay, so I had no particular expectations when I started reading this. It just sounded kind of interesting and the cover had a brooding guy on a throne, and who can resist that?
Not I.
But WOW, this story starts off like someone kicked the doors open and just like that, I got nothing else done for the rest of the day.
The tropes of the story are familiar, with a system and multiverse, but different enough to be innovative and, quite frankly, marvelous. This story didn't go at all the way I was expecting, with Adam spending a not insignificant amount of time in a hive in the Dreamverse. As stories with parasitic insect hives are generally a no for me, the fact that this one kept me reading anyway is all due to the story's own merits. I particularly liked how the story switched between Adam's time in the Dreamverse and on Earth. Both storylines are interesting in themselves, but when combined they create a world of ever growing depths. It made it so things simply never got the chance to get boring.
That said, I'm glad I didn't know about the insect hive when I started, or I might not have read it. And then I never would've discovered Mother Zara, Adam's Dreamverse caretaker. She's such a fascinating and complex character. For the life of me I can't figure out if her actions are driven solely by self interest, or if she genuinely cares about Adam. Will she end up betraying him? Or will he kill her one day? Will his parents ever figure out what she's been doing to him while "caring" for him? There's only so much manipulation and trauma that can be excused as "for your own good". It's driving me crazy, and I love it.
About Adam. He's a child. A child that has experienced twice his physical age and is therefore more rational and mature than most, but a child nonetheless. A child who has experienced some harsh realities and is under a lot of stress. A person's brain, specifically their prefrontal cortex (the part of the brain responsible for self control and critical think - caerulexRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I read voraciously, but it's fairly hard for a random story to grip me from the beginning such that I can't stop reading it and do a full binge. This story is the first in weeks, maybe months, to grip me like that.
The story follows Adam, harbinger of the system apocalypse on Earth -- the arrival of the Dreamverse, a massive world that spans countless planets/realities that people access in their sleep. A species begins to enter the Dreamverse when the first Dreamchild is born, someone with a heightened connection to the Dreamverse. In the Dreamverse, time is dilated at a 3:1 ratio, so if you sleep for 8 hours you are in the Dreamverse for 24. In the Dreamverse you have litrpg stats and stuff, so you can level up and access magic. If you die in the Dreamverse, you die in real life.
When Adam fully awakens at the ripe age of 8, he starts the integration of humanity into the Dreamverse. Oops.
Because Adam has spent the majority of his waking life in the Dreamverse, he's not a normal kid. How so?
1. Adam has lived way longer than his 8 year old body would suggest. Adam has issues, like anger management and hastiness, that I attribute to the mismatch between his physical body and his mental age. Just imagine being stuck in a child body for 3x the time. When I was a kid, it felt like time moved so slowly, and poor Adam grows up physically at a much slower rate.
2. Adam has been raised by a powerful hive queen, Zara, in a massive hive where he's the hive prince. I thought this element of the story was pretty creative. Zara is embroiled in a war on all other sentients on their Dreamverse planet. Adam is therefore raised by an arguably villainous figure.
When Adam awakens, he gets a sinister-seeming cult leader charisma-based class that forces him to establish a cult. It gives him class quests that have severe penalties if he doesn't do them, such as cult member recruitment quotas. At the same time, the class seems to be really powerful... and it has one other big plus. Fol - damienrjamesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The author has created a captivating world with a fascinating premise. Dreamscape incorporates some common fantasy elements, the inclusion of the hive and Adam's guardian Zara adding unique and intriguing dimensions to the setting.
Stylistically, the author excels at expressing character feelings and conflicts, allowing for full immersion. Personally I’m not a fan of cardboard characters, which isn’t the case here. Real emotions, real consequences. I was engaged with the strategies devised by the main character. The environment was also vividly depicted, providing a rich backdrop for the story. Moreover, the author's descriptions of the hive vividly brought this distinct setting to life.
From a grammatical point of view, the chapters I read were well-polished, with no major concerns that detracted from the story.
In terms of storytelling, the author displays a commendable commitment to proper development. My only hiccup is that some areas were pretty heavy on the expedition, but that is a quick fix. I’d focus more on the world building and characters in the beginning and integrate the backstory/history where fit.
Overall, the author has created an engrossing narrative, skillfully balancing world-building, action, and character development. The story has the potential to become even more compelling. Keep it up! - josh065Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0It's a great story so far and I've honestly been enjoying it but I came across an ad for the story on RR in the form of advertising for the cult. I'm assuming the loop hole you created with MCs power in the advertising will appear in the story later which isn't anything major but any and all spoilers I hate and can really put readers off.
