- DjwhyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story made a great job introducing its character while simultaneously presenting their trial and goals. The narrative also succeds in balancing telling enough to invest the reader while not demystifying.
These distinct characters have a goalz making you want see them through. For example Lumina’s intense survival training and Eldin’s journey of elemental mastery. The author also fairly competently describes the environment and setting in an profound manner. We hear of historical events which set the stage like the great cataclysm and inter racial conflicts. There is also well executed magic systems which enriches the battles these adventurers encounter.
In these early introductory chapters I also felt that there was a underlying tension set up for challenges ahead which could introduce some much appreciated complexity. On the other hand the author could be going for straight well written hype. Although I got the vibe that story will blossom into the former I would also appreciate the latter.
I also want to point out the dynamic between Lumina and Eldin. I really value defined dynamics which are twisted in al sorts of ways to create entertaining and dramatic moments. This bond between the main character's is what I hope the author executed well in the later chapters. I recommend this story to people that enjoy action fantasy with focus on it's characters! - Darker7Royal Road★★★★ 4.0This story is very charming, but suffers from things being told that needn't be told and being a bit lazy on the execution when something is shown.
Most of the worldbuilding asides can either be inferred, are not necessary to understand just yet, or really ought to be shown instead.
The grammar is overall pretty good and most people won't notice the few defects. The biggest issue here is that conversations aren't broken into as many paragraphs as they should be.
Truthfully, I didn't get very far into the story before dropping it, but I'm also living by the motto, "There's so much stuff out there that fits my tastes 10/10, I don't need to settle for something 9/10" :Ü™ - RznRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5The title sums up the direction of the book. The author might add to this in the future or make a separate fiction, so I am hedging a bit with this review in that case. Eldin and Lumina venture out into the world and come across the beginnings of a foul plot; it takes some steps, adds a bunch of elements and comes to an end. There is a loose narrative arc. It is not fully developed, instead it leans into the promise of book 2.
The characters are developing throughout the book. Eldin's father Elrin is an Archbishop while his son becomes an Elementalist. Lumina is daughter of Lucina. Yes, names can be a bit of a problem (particularly if you have dyslexia) and because the parents are important it remains a minor issue throughout. Eldin and Lucina are not very intelligent protagonists or competent. Particularly frustrating is how Lucina is a Fereece (animal trait hybrids) and despite being 90% human with fox ears and a tail - her kind is hunted, enslaved, and branded. Does this become a problem given her living situation and her employer who deals in Fereece - absolutely. It stops short of what I would call 'denial', but just barely. Eldin who travels with her remains oblivious to this fact too. He's innocent and naive, but with awesome magical power.
As more and more characters are introduced, the prose improves and the narrative struggle grows more obvious. There is a fair amount of POV head hopping which can be disorienting because of two things. A character will speak and a different character will add to it in the same paragraph. This occurs in reactions and internal thoughts from time to time. Later on, this becomes more of a problem when certain characters are introduced. Reading this in light mode may pose an issue because of the yellow text that accompanies a specific character. The author might fix this though.
My gripe is how it takes half the book to start the main plot and how it sidesteps what might have been a solid conclusion of an arc. The handling of t
