I'm not into PvP, but got thrown into the Arena World

Description
This is a story for those who feel they don't fit into the world they're in, and are dealing with systematic oppression.
----------------------------------“In this world, survival means fighting others to the death.”Such were the words of those who had endured this unforgiving realm.
For Zi-Cheng, a game designer who detests PvP gameplay, this was the last place he wanted to be.
After a betrayal by his business partners leaves him bankrupt and ruined, Zi-Cheng is suddenly thrust into a brutal new world where “PvP” is more than just a game — it’s the rule of survival.
Stranded in a foreign land without combat skills or allies, Zi-Cheng assumes the nameVentusand relies on his designer’s instincts to stay alive. The Kingdom of Izanish, once founded by noble heroes, has rotted into corruption, with its leaders pushing citizens into constant “People vs. People” conflicts as a mean to tighten their grip on power.
As Ventus walks the fine line between survival and surrender, he faces a choice: find a way to outsmart this ruthless system or become another pawn in its bloody arena. In a world where betrayal is currency and survival demands sacrifice, can he hold onto his ideals, or will he become another puppet dancing at the fingertips of the powerful?
----------------------------------What to Expect
[+] Weak to strong progression[+] No Harem (realistic relationships)[+] The protagonist is a game designer[+] Isekai story with connection to modern world[+] Lots of game, anime/mange, movie reference[+] Third-person perspective[+] 1,600 - 2200 words per entry (multiple entry per chapter)[+] JLN (Japanese Light Novel) inspired writing style[+] 1st Volume (64 Chapters) already completed in Chinese, this is the English translation[+] Update every Mon and Thurs (18:30 PST)
----------------------------------Note from Author (Jan 11, 2025): Changes to Update Schedule
I'm slowly recovering from the flu, and regaining my strength to continue with the edit and translation. Happy to announce new chapters are going to resume on Jan 20, and updates will continue to take placeevery Monday and Thursday, 18:30 (PST). In addition to the new chapters, I have also went back to fix several issues with the story based on comments I have received. This include adjustments to passages to better reflect its original Chinese version, as well as some additional paragraphs added to better describe character's motives and action. I am also aware that some readers may find the AI-generated illustration distracting, and as result, I decide to hide them behind spoiler buttons, only reveal if you wish to see them with a press of the button.

This is a story of tenacity and hope. Zi-Cheng is offered a chance to go to another world after losing everything in the “real world” due to treachery. Once there, things aren’t easy and he has to struggle for every little bit of progress, but he never gives up. I’m curious to see just how far he’s able to go and what heights he’s able to reach!
Character 5/5
Zi-Cheng is always on the backfoot. Even though he’s experienced deep betrayal, he’s still trying to believe the “best” in people. That’s part of what drew me into this story. He never gives up, but still doesn’t want to turn into one of those people who mistreats and distrusts everyone. That hope and tenacity in the face of dishonesty and bullying fills me with hope that there are people who still look for better ways through difficult situations.
Grammar 5/5
No complaints here.
Story 5/5
A world that is built around PvP where the MC doesn’t have any combat skills. And worse, doesn’t have a broken OP noncombat skill.
Style 5/5
Definitely could see this as an anime / manga. NoxC even includes images to help set the scenes, which adds more imagery without taking up large chunks of words. - FritakRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is a cool isekai. Instead of another “chosen one with a big-ass sword”, the protagonist gets this game-themed skill that forces him to think his way out of problems. Honestly, it’s amazing! Feels like a mashup of Log Horizon’s strategy with Reincarnated as a Slime’s creativity. You’re not just watching another overpowered hero biggy bang through fights—it’s more about using brains, and that’s what makes it fun for me.
The MC is scrappy, and weirdly relatable. He’s got issues, but don't we all? He just keeps moving forward. Sometimes he overthinks things, and those moments drag a bit, but they help him be relatable. The world feels alive and that's great. There’s this one nighttime scene early on—it’s quiet and totally draws you without a bunch of exposition. Honestly, the world-building is really good without slowing the story.
Side characters are... good. Some feel a little one-dimensional at first, but there’s a growth and my favorite is lowly obsidian rank :) If they get fleshed out even more later, they'll add so much to the story, I can't wait!
Pacing-wise, it mostly works. Some parts fly by with great momentum, while others slow down. My favorite are Chevalier Licorne :), that prologue ending, Elena and... how everything runs on "oil" :D
Overall, it’s clever, different, and worth sticking with, can't wait for more parts. - Ryujin2xdRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The first few paragraphs absolutely sell the desperation of Zi-Cheng’s situation. I really like the use of the ruined studio, the broken dreams, the unpaid rent—it all feels painfully real.
This isn’t just a typical "loser gets isekai’d" setup. Zi-Cheng was actually good at what he did—but that didn’t save him. That makes him far more interesting than the usual "down-on-his-luck" protagonists in the genre.
When I read about the betrayal from his business partner? Totally gut-wrenching in the best way, and it works to cement interest in the plot and characters. That's fantastic world-building.
Zi-Cheng doesn’t just wake up in another world—he gets erased from his own first. And the imagery used to describe the descent into the world is a poetic mix of dream-like prose and lingering nightmare material.
That small detail changes everything. He doesn’t remember the full terms of his "deal," which makes the entire process feel more like a trap than a second chance. It’s not just a new world; it’s a contract with fine print he hasn’t read yet.
Zi-Cheng himself is a fantastic protagonist. He’s bitter, but not pathetic. He’s clever, but not overpowered. He’s cautious, but still takes risks. His inner monologue is hilarious without going over-the-top, and most importantly, he questions everything. He doesn’t blindly accept that this is a game-like world; he compares things to game logic but doesn’t rely on it. That alone makes him more believable than most genre protagonists.
The worldbuilding is another standout element. The arena system isn’t just a gimmick; it feels like a legitimate social structure. The Sanctuary ritual adds an eerie layer of mystery, and Chris Coleman, the ex-fighter turned guide, helps make even the "normal" people feel like they belong in this world. The setting doesn’t exist just to serve the protagonist. It feels lived in, like it has its own history and rules that existed before Zi-Cheng showed up. That level of detail makes a massive difference. - jkmancyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This story is just getting started with only one chapter so far, but wow, it’s already impressively well-written! The descriptions are vivid, and there’s a nice sense of intrigue that pulls you in. I can’t wait to see where the author takes us next—I really hope they keep it going!
