- 3.K.CRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style: A solid standard of third person perspective narrative. Chapters are assigned a character perspective that the narrative follows, the majority is focused on the main character with breaks allowing perspective into other characters' experience. The precedent is set early on and the pacing of chapters avoids frustrating breaks in narrative between perspective shifts.
I will preface that the following demerits are largely contained to the beginning of the story. As it progresses, the author improves and they become much less obtrusive. While there is always room to improve, the author shows marked improvement with little critical feedback.
Show-not-tell: We are often told how characters feel or how things are rather than having it expressed.
Character Breaks: Often mixed in with show not tell, chapters are often assigned a character focus in the beginning, but we are told the feelings and reactions of other characters directly, breaking focus on the intended perspective.
Story: A unique perspective of the Power Ranger concept with solid world-building. The story has no glaring holes or fallacies and follows a compelling plot.
Grammar: Solid, with rare typos.
Character: The main character is properly fleshed out, with at most minor discrepancies that can honestly be written off as imperfect reactions as humans do.
As for other characters, unfortunately we do not get as much fleshed out. This in part has to do with the author's earlier struggle with character focus. It is obvious that characters are multifaceted, but most characters struggle to be fully themselves outside of relation to the main character.
Overall, a solid story I found enjoyable with most flaws being minor. I honestly didn't mind the earlier demerits as soon as I identified the author's visible improvement over time. - Camadt (Alex Hancock)Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall
I haven’t watched Power Rangers in years, so this was a nice blast of nostalgia for me. I am very excited to see where the story goes as this feels very much like an origins or “before they were deployed” type story.
Character
At this point in the story there’s really only the protagonist, Oliver Nameless. He’s a kid from our time that managed to survive the bombings only to get frozen and woken up hundreds of years later. He’s alone, with anyone he ever knew long dead. He has a less than desirable job of disposing of Ork corpses, but it pays the bills. His life shifts when the mandatory draft comes for him and he joins the Ranger’s Academy.
There are two side characters that are developing in Alan Aquila and Isabela de Luca, the two other people that Oliver was drafted with. Alan teams up with Oliver during one of the exercises and I get the feeling the two are going to be close. Isabela is part of the more powerful named families, but her concern for Oliver gave me a good feeling about her.
Grammar
No complaints here.
Story
The story follows a weak orphan who is drafted into the military to fight monsters. So far Oliver has only had to fight off an ambush and survive the opening tests, but that just means there is plenty more for him to do!
Style
GCLopes blends a post-apocalyptic setting with futuristic tech as well as an urban fantasy and school setting. While I haven’t got very far into the school part of it, the story promises plenty of excitement and danger as the threat of an Ork invasion is always looming over the story. - GD_CruzRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Spoiler-free review
As an adult who watched the OG red ranger board his T-Rex and lead the first iteration of the Power Rangers, I was so looking forward to reading this story, and I gotta say Lopes did not disappoint! It's exactly what I expected and more--full of fast-paced action and jargon that tickled my inner child's funny bone, transporting me back to a time of superheroes who did their job in matching colorful uniforms.
As an MC, Oliver is a delight to follow. He's just at the right age to be whimsical and hopeful and still be practical in his approach to protecting his world--or vengeance. That works too. He's also not the angtsy teenagers one might expect to be given his backstory. Sure, He's got issues, but nothing too annoying that would make you wanna scream at the page. Rounded out by a delightful supporting cast--and you've got a story that leans into its characters to help tell a punch-bad-guys-and-save-lives ranger tale that's worth a read. Of course, I'd say the villains are an issue, but that's something you expect from villains of ranger stories. They're always gonna be b-rate and crap, it's part of the charm.
Grammar's solid with few errors that don'teven need mentioning, and the style is also well done. It's a bit too fast paced for me but that's a personal gripe.
My verdict; read up--you can tell I'm gushing over this thing. Maybe it's just me, but we all need more rangers in our lives...and as a red ranger myself (at least in my dreams), I encourage you all to take the time to read this novel, and have it transport you back to a childhood when the Avengers weren't the standard for superheroes! - GhostDreamerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Amazing novel that packs a punch with its exciting blend of Prog Fantasy and Sci-Fi, making it a must-try for fans of both genres. With strong delivery and only a few minor issues, it shows great potential to become a standout in the progression fantasy scene.
STYLE: 4.5/5. I love fast paced battle and stories. An issues, howerver, is the use of sound effects in dialogue, and the way they are written. It breaks my immersion sometimes.
GRAMMAR: 5/5. Technically, the story is solid. The grammar is clean, with no noticeable issues. My only minor critique is that the repetitive use of certain punctuation marks like "..." at the end of chapters can feel a bit overdone, but it does contribute to the cliffhanger style that autor employs.
STORY: 4.5/5. The concept is straightforward yet compelling: a Power Rangers-inspired world with a sci-fi twist and a progression system. There haven't been too many surprises yet, but the setup leaves room for interesting developments. Fans of progression fantasy and battle/war arcs will find what they’re looking for here.
CHARACTER: 4/5. So far, the characters haven't fully clicked with me. There are several to keep track of, especially with the academy setting, and while they're not flat, I haven't found myself deeply attached yet. That said, the protagonist Oliver is growing on me, and Alan is a standout in the cast. The hinted love interest subplot isn’t my cup of tea, but it’s a familiar trope that many readers will appreciate.
OVERALL: 4.5/5 (rounded to 5). I recommend this to fans of sci-fi progression fantasy. It’s a direct, light read that delivers on its promises: engaging battles, a growing power system, and a steady sense of reward as the story progresses. It's definitely a satisfying read for those who enjoy this genre. - J BakerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0At first I was hesitant due to the title when found Book 1 on KU, (was a teen in the 90s and wasn't all that big a fan of the MMPR show) but I was between books and gave it a shot. Couldn't put book 1 down and immediately binged book 2. Quickly switched over to RR because I didn't want to wait for book 3 to get to KU. It has nice progression with the right amount of action and character development. Not usually a fan of Multi-POV but this one is more multi-POV lite where it follows the main POC and only sprinkles in other POVs when needed to expand the story/context of what's going on. As the my review title states if you liked the Iron Prince: Warformed: Stormweaver give this one a shoot.
- TheAngryGnomeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I was expecting a juvenile rewrite of a classic. What I got was a character who isn't perfect or ridiculously op, flawed and learning to cope in a complicated dangerous world. A setting that would seem over used and tired yet somehow comes across new vibrant and complex. The progression makes sense with proper growth and no ridiculous stat explosion. All in all a great read. I'm looking forward to the authors journey n can't wait to see where the story leads.
- TracyhillRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really like your story that’s one of the best ones I’ve seen and I’m quite some time. Are you gonna let him learn some old Martial arts and re-discover some old technology too for him to learn and learn how to make his own Z crystal a custom one for the reds. Or he’s gonna make his own crystal custom one like he made his own Ranger thing Crystal And are you gonna learn some arts where he can use his crystal energy on?or he’s gonna build his own mix are there ever gonna be making or there something he just come up with?and is he gonna have other weapons he can use aside for the pistol like a sword or anything else an AC ever going go back to the fight arenait would be fun to see him mess with old technology to aside for the technology they had out of now in thereOr he built his own transformer would be something funny to seeI would like to see the other races in a wreck with him as well the sea how he deals with everything else in he feels about it and I wanna how they gonna feel about the traitors and the Rangers
- tobascoasakoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The author takes the familiar trope of Power Rangers or Sentai heroes and skillfully reimagines it within a thrilling alien invasion by ORKS! This unique spin brings a grounded and exhilarating twist to a classic theme, as it blends familiar hero dynamics with the harsh realities of war. The stakes are high, and the characters' journeys are gritty, giving the story a sense of authenticity while maintaining the charm and excitement of the original Sentai-inspired setup.
From the very beginning, the story’s fast-paced nature draws readers in, with an immediate scramble for survival after the main character's mandatory conscription and an ORK attack that keeps you on the edge of your seat. The intensity doesn’t let up as the characters luckily make their way to a training center, where the real fun begins. Here, we’re introduced to a diverse mix of recruits—plucky newcomers, ambitious fast-trackers, those riding on nepotism, and raw talents—all of whom add depth to the plot without overloading it. This variety creates an engaging blend of personalities and motives, adding complexity to the narrative.
The prose is smooth, with only a few minor grammatical errors, but these appear intentional, lending a casual style that feels fitting for the genre. The writing flows naturally from sentence to sentence and paragraph to paragraph, making it easy to stay immersed in the action.
The characters are well-developed and captivating, with a lead you can’t help but root for. Even the supporting cast steps beyond stereotypical roles, becoming characters with their own quirks and backstories, which gives the story a genuine, lived-in feel.
In summary, this book is a delightful and action-packed read. With strong characters, fast-paced action, and an imaginative twist on classic Sentai themes, it’s a great pick for fans of Power Rangers or anyone looking for a fresh, fun adventure. Highly recommended! - ValdenePatriarchRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5As someone who enjoys science fiction and action-packed stories, "I'll be the Red Ranger" immediately caught my attention. The first four chapters pulled me into a world filled with Ork invasions and the enigmatic Rangers. Oliver's journey from an ordinary teenager to someone caught in extraordinary circumstances was both engaging and relatable. I found myself eagerly clicking next to see what would happen.

Style: 4/5
The author's writing style is straightforward and easy to follow, which made immersing myself in the story quite effortless. The action scenes are particularly well-executed; I could vividly picture the battles and felt the tension during the confrontations with the Orks. However, there were moments where I wished for more descriptive detail to fully flesh out the settings and emotions. Adding a bit more depth in certain scenes could enhance the overall atmosphere and reader connection.
Why it wasn't 5/5: While the writing is clear and engaging, it occasionally lacks the rich descriptions that would fully bring the world and characters to life.
Story: 4/5
The plot is compelling, throwing readers straight into the action, which I thoroughly enjoyed. The unexpected Ork attack and the introduction of the Red Ranger were thrilling and set up an intriguing premise for the rest of the novel. That said, some plot transitions felt a bit abrupt. I found myself wanting more background information about the world, the Orks, and the Rangers to fully grasp the stakes and context.
Why it wasn't 5/5: The story is exciting but could benefit from smoother pacing and additional world-building to deepen the reader's understanding and investment.
Grammar: 3.5/5
Overall, the grammar is solid, and the prose is easy to read. However, I did notice occasional grammatical errors and awkward phrasings that momentarily took me out of the story. For instance, some sentences could be restructured for clarity, and there were minor punctuation mistakes. A thorough proofreading pa - demonshadow639Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is an amazing story!!! I originally clicked it because I grew up with the power rangers, they got me through a lot lol. But I expected to just have something while a waited a few other stories… yep that was a mistake I was unable to put the book down. The MC, while he does have his moments of “idiotic MC”, is quick on his feet and a pretty realistic guy. In this case a lot of the “wtf are you doing” moments are pretty covered by him not having a lot of the same basic knowledge as everyone else. An amazing story that is definitely worth the time. Check it out.
