Description

{Adapted from the Popular Webtoon}According to history, they say wherever there is war, death and chaos, there's a Hyking. Can Lawkey, a mere human who was somehow unjustly inflicted, overcome such a curse of old, or will this saying stay true to the past?

This story begins with a boy who mysteriously survives a battle that was ravaged by a Leviathan beast. Despite losing everything and everyone he knew, he makes a promise to carry on their torch and seek out the Leviathan no matter what. However, he keeps attracting mysterious beings, monsters and situations far above his capabilities due to a curse he shouldn't have been born with, The Hykings' Curse. This constant misfortune forces him to be a danger to everyone around him.

After the death of everyone he cared about, he eventually stumbles on a hidden village within the depth of a dark ravine, where he has to juggle between surviving the hidden threats aiming for his life, and training both his swordsmanship skills and power. When the time is right and he is ready, he'll venture out to try and keep his promises!

The saddest part? The boy can't even get some Pancakes!

This is a Progression Fantasy story about a race of cursed individuals who are in constant battle with fate, destiny, and the cursed nature within them.

I want to start by saying that this is a novel adaptation from the webtoon that the author also does. This allowed me a chance to have a visual reference to some of the things that happen even though the novel covers a LOT more material than what is shown in the webtoon.
    Overall 5/5
This is an amazing ride into the Universe that the author has created and I can’t wait to read more of what they create!
    Character 5/5
The story mainly follows Lawkey, who so far in the first volume is a pancake-craving 12-year-old. Lawkey is a boy who has experienced great loss and is struggling to get strong enough so that he stops losing things. He meets Munisai, the kind mentor, who offers to teach Lawkey the way of the sword. He also runs into Jun, a girl who becomes his rival. There are plenty of other supporting characters we meet along the way, each with their own dreams and quirks.
    Grammar 5/5
I don’t remember seeing any grammar mistakes, which earns a 5/5 in my book.
    Story 5/5
The story follows Lawkey on a journey for revenge and pancakes. Along the way, he realizes that willpower alone won’t be enough for him to get revenge for the ones he has lost and resolves to learn as much as he can from the sword school to get stronger.
    Style 5/5
Despite the deep and rich world that the author has created, they take great pains not to infodump and instead ease you into the characters and places so you never feel overwhelmed. I really like their style of painting each scene because even though this is written in third person, I feel like I’m right there in the middle of everything that is happening.

I wasn't sure what to expect from a novel adaptation from a Webtoon, but I wasn't at all disappointed. Granted almost nothing that is out so far was covered in the comic, but that just really excites me about what else is going to be covered in the novel that wasn't in the comic. The author includes images embedded inside the chapters to show scenes that have just been covered. This type of extra effort is a style that really like. The author says that English is a self taught fourth language, but you wouldn't know it by reading this. There aren't any grammar errors that I could find, which easily earns it full marks. The characters so far have been mostly Lawkey at 12 and villains/monsters, though I'm not sure if the parasite is a villain or not. At this point Lawkey acts like an angry kid, but the author captures the emotions of a kid at that age really well. The pace moves through the plots as the MC struggles to get some type of recognition from each of the villains. The action does cut to focus on Munisa for a chapter, and I'm aware of what their relationship will eventually become due to spoilers from the Webtoon, but it was fun to see the start of one of the fights from someone's perspective who wasn't just mindlessly attacking with raw strength. Overall, I have high hopes about where this series is going to go!

As a long time fan of the manhwa, I'm really excited to read this! It looks like there is plenty of new content from the very start too which makes things enjoyable to read from the start again.
the story is interesting, well-written and somewhat new. It feels like a combination of a variety of popular media, but you'll barely notice it once you're into it.
The characters are almost all great. Whether it's the mc or the side characters, almost everyone gets a time to shine in the manhwa, and i'm sure that will be the case here too from what I've already read. the mentor's story is very compelling for example
and having art to go along with the text is honestly very interesting, even if we occasionally get both colored and non-colored artworks within one chapter. Even better that the original artist from the manhwa is drawing them
Can't wait to see our Mc fight for pancakes again. I look forward to seeing how the later parts of the manhwa will be written here!
Reviews must be 200 words here apparently... make sure to support the author here so we can get the webtoon back. the art in the manhwa was great
