Hopping Toward Home : A universe hopping, What The Trope?, non-progression romance adventure!
Community Rating
Description
After a long night at work, Zaria Joseph finds herself faced with the unbelievable. Knocked out of her own universe and into another, she has to traipse through the tropes on a long road heading, hopefully, toward home. Armed at first with only her polite manager's smile and her...mostly calm demeanor, she makes her way through worlds she didn't know existed outside of books. Knowing the stories inspired by the worlds she is traveling through won't help, though. Reality can be very different than fiction...
Due to the nature of the book, there will be tone and POV type changes across the different arcs. Arc 1 has been described to me as a satire, and, honestly? That fits. Every other paragraph at times you get poked in the eye with a trope from the stories that world is based on. And it might be somewhat light and romantic, but it won't last. Things will get serious, and things will get dark...
Trigger Warnings:Violence, mild mature physical affection (make-out scenes), assault, death, mention of rape/sexual assault, anxiety and PTSD, dark subjects like captivity
**Author note: This story, as with every story I write, was a challenge to myself to write outside of my comfort zone. I don't like 3rd person omniscient, I find it dizzying at times, but most of the stories I have read that inspired the first arc are all 3rd O. One day I know I will go back and rewrite the whole arc to change to limited. For now, the story is as it was when it was when it was first completed. After that arc is over the POV will wobble a few times as the MC recovers from her time in that world, but it will mostly become limited with a few exceptions.

- AbbyCeeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Interesting and I will keep reading, the tags and description got me curious. Is it a romance, but there is gore and there is fantasy but also science fiction? Main character is a strong female who goes through a portal into another world and gets trapped. She has to move from one world to the next alone until she gets home.
Style Score - The style feels like it fits the MC. Summary says there will be POV changes, I want to see if style will change as well.
Grammar Score - A couple of things I wasn't sure what they meant, but google fixed me. Pointed out one punctuation edit. Out of five chapters that isn't bad.
Story Score- Interesting story so far, already one common story 'trope' by chapter four that turned out different than how its normally used. Her reaction with the drunk guy was a nice change.
Character Score - I took a little away because I wasn't sure if MC is supposed to be angry all the time or if she is really sad. A couple times in chapter 5 it is clear she is scared but then she runs right at danger. If she is young how is she dealing with things that well? Is it a fake out? Or does that get explained later? - AsmeonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I have followed along with Hopping Toward Home on another platform and would highly recommend it to any reader of online books. You will for certain recognize the tropes that Zaria comes accross as she travels through dimensions and it is fun to have a collective laugh at them or to even notice how you prefer some over the others!
Also, akingroberts has a fun writing style and makes sure that she edits before posting, so it will be a breeze to read. I would say, give it a chance and see how you like it! - S_WinterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Although there isn't a huge amount of this story written yet, what is published so far is promising. A normal woman stuck in an unsatisfying dead-end job has an unexpected encounter one night near the dumpsters. That catapults her into a different world with a strange man. By the point I'm up to (Chapter 3) she's starting her epic odyssey towards home, though I suspect that like Odysseus, she's going to have far too many stops along the route for her comfort. Though it will be interesting to find out if she will develop any sort of powers on her journey.
Style
A really nice style, easily readable and engaging.
Grammar
No issues noted - perfect grammar and word choice as far as I can detect.
Story
Again, it's only early days yet, but so far the story is intriguing and seems to have a good foundation. I'm sure whatever gamelit elements are intended will show themselves soon, perhaps as a result of something given to her in Chapter 3.
Character
I like Zaria - she's a cool customer who manages to keep her head despite the strangeness that's happening around her. She has an intriguing power which may be the basis of some events later in the story - I'm interested to see how this is developed. Plus, as mentioned earlier, I'm curious to see how the gamelit aspects are going to come into play.
In general, good start and I look forward to reading more! - GonoaRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5That's the phrase I have in my head when I think about the MC. She is my favorite part of this story, but later more on that.
Story:
I really like the story and the setting of her having to travel between universes to find her way home. The story is engaging, sometimes funny, sometimes serious and sometimes mysterious. And I didn't get bored for a moment while reading it.
The only part I didn't like was the info dump in the second chapter. But this is really negligible, as it is only a short part. But I think the story would be even more interesting, if this big amount of info wouldn't be told immediately, shrouding the whole thing in some more mystery.
Style:
Generally very easy to read. Not too much explanation and not too little. Just the right amount to set the mood.
Sometimes though, there are kind of confusing descriptions of scructures or actions, which I have to read twice. But as these are rare occasions, it's really not a major issue.
Grammar:
Great. I saw maybe one or two mistakes per chapter, which I think is an accomplishment.
Character:
I really love the MC. She is very well written in my opinion, and has many interesting sides to her. She is bold and confident, but also has a sensible side to her. And she feels very human to me, which is the biggest reason why I like this character. The only reason why I'm not giving 5 stars is, that I think that the whole thing doesn't impact her that much in the beginning, which was a little irritating for me. But I guess that's just not the focus of the story and the author doesn't want to spend too long in the beginning scenario which I also understand. So as with the other parts: Really not a major issue.
All in all I really enjoy this story and also follow it. I can only recommend for you to take a look into it.
