Description

When the colony carrier Caduceus is hijacked by pirates, it manages to fire off a single escape pod as a forlorn hope. Aboard that pod is Marissa Sokolov, an idealistic post-human woman, equipped with an advanced artificial intelligence named Shep. Together, they have a single goal, to find and retrieve the colony ship containing her friends and family. Unfortunately, arriving on Gagneux's World is possibly a worse fate than that which befell the Caduceus. If she has any hope of seeing her people again, she must first fight her way off-planet.

At the same time, the megacorp Infinitech, which funded the colony expedition in the first place, wants to make good on their investment. They hire a private investigator by the name of Tarin Henrikson, a ruthless cyborg more than a century old, who sees the world in black and white. He will stop at nothing to see his job completed, and woe to anyone who stands in his way. Fate will draw the two together as Marissa seeks to find her homestead among the stars.

A breath of fresh in air on RoyalRoad, Homestead Among the Stars boldly sets itself apart through carefully thought out prose marrying what in a lesser piece of fiction might be called inscrutable technobabble, and manages to find a steady middle ground that will satisfy the technically minded as well as those of us who's eyes tend to glaze over upon reading the phrase 'quantum link'.
Mr. Henderson demonstrates a clear grasp of the English language and a distinct style, effortlessly weaving expository worldbuilding while continuing to drive the narrative forward, a somewhat daunting task when you must present a world so complex.
While we only have a few chapters at this time to examine our small cast of characters, they each have a clear voice and endearing traits. My favorites thus far being Gerald and Baron, who I'm hoping don't meet their end during the white-knuckled battles that we can come to expect from the examples of Chapter 2.
Though Homestead Among the Stars is, unfortunately, a bit of an odd duck amongst the Stars of Royal Road, if post-humanity scifi and dystopic space adventures is of any interest to you, I hope it finds a homestead with you.

Yes, you might have seen from the title of this review that I got into the Elden Ring rabbit hole once again. Truth be told, there are similarities between this novel and elden ring, or at least my brain seemed fit to evoke passages and themes from the game as I read. Why? I do not know, but I know that it only means this is as awesome and inspiring as playing the game was for me.
Onto the review. There was once a story, waiting to be told. And so here we are, weaving between many points of view, engrossed and immersed in a strange universe far far into the future. Where alien and strange technologies lie. Where people dip out of reality, into simulation, as readily as a thought. Where AIs are friends, and foes. An alien world, yet so filled with human emotion. Where pirates still sport the skull and bones flag. Where space is like a great ocean, and once you venture out of the known waters you find yourself in that part of the map where here be monsters. And monsters there are, pulsars and space stations, pirates and the expanse of space.
Might we see Eldritch horrors one day? I wouldn't be surprised if this novel took a bit of a Leviathan Wakes turn and, frankly, I'd love it. With how evocative the writing style is, with how entrancing the plots and subplots are, i would read anything this author throws at me. And I'd totally buy the paperback book too!
Descriptions are on point, aligned with the usual scifi habit of throwing you in the deep end of things and letting you figure it out yourself, with some explanations sprinkled in here and there to help you out. But dont let the thalassophobia get to you, we've got deep space for that, for the characters are all deeply human and relatable, people you could find here in the world but now they are out in space.
Close your eyes, let the words take you. You dont need to research every term, just let the scifi lingo roll on your tongue, savor it, let it take you on an adventure. There are three storylines from the get-g

One of the most striking things about the story is how it paints a mental picture of its technology and world.  While there are only two parts at the time of writing this, the larger universe is slowly being explored alongside the main plot. The story is focused on three central figures, each radically different in personality and lifestyle. While constantly changing perspectives could lead to issues, the story does a decent job at having the emotion of each scene flow into each other if it can continue this trend as the story develops, it would make the story very comfortable to read. Overall an interesting start to the story, and I look forward to seeing how the setting and plot develop.
