Description

When the flies of war die, even the warlike nuzzle with homely comfort and familial bliss. In such a peaceful world, where the roars of war are faraway and forgotten, only whispers at dusk keep memories and warnings of brutality alive.

Louder are the cheers of the once warlike Arrkad'vla Empire celebrating strength and valor. Countless there set out to bask in these applauses. Among their ranks is a young, barely educated young man -- Jyevodirr. To be the Kraturr, the Emperor of Arrkad'vla, all he needs to do is be considered the strongest. He knows he has the strength to do that. He believes in himself. What concerns him more are the connections he wants to make. People, politics, and the world — he hardly knows any of that. What he does know are the changes he wants to implement once in power. He's quite certain of them —but does he understand the gravity of Change?

Home of the Duskis a High Fantasy tale in the form of an age old 'Coming of Age' tale that looks like a 'Quest for Power'.** But any glance beneath that surface will reveal a complex world, complicated people, and questions tearing down assumptions — of power, strength, decadence and progress.

Whatnotto expect?

*A breakneck pace of plot plot plot, because this story lives in the quiet gestures as much as in the grand scheme of everything.*Monologic tone, meaning more characters occasionally focused on rather than the protagonist only.*Power driven plotbecause power is not everything here.Doesn't mean power is irrelevant either.*Simple numbers, meaning no Tables, Skills, numbers and RPG Systems. We honor the complexity of information here.*Barebones Prosody, as I don't believe in the report format of writing. Not for a Novel.

First off, I LOVE that the pronunciations are available for certain words! Just hover over it and pops up! That is so cool to me!
I'm enjoying this story so far; the prose is very old-fashioned, poetic, and high-fantasy.
The culture is interesting. There are many references to strong/powerful women as the objects of affection. As a fellow lover of strong women, I agree with these characters passions and ideologies lol.
Let's dive into the nitty gritty, the meat of the story so far without spoilers:
We've got an isolated, privileged heir with philosophical musings. I may not agree with said musings, but that's ok, it doesn't break the story for me, it's what makes it interesting. I think this is the most intriguing character to me so far because of the paranoia, political backstabbery, intelligence, fragility, and worries about public perception.
We've got a streetwise, pragmatic, cynic acting as a foil to his royalness. Yet it seems we're seeing the first signs of mutual reliance! It's too early to tell, but I look forward to this story line developing further.
Then we've got RAW POWER! I shant say much more about that.
This immersive, introspective, dangerous, slow-burning, fantasy story is rich with character development. I highly recommend.

High Fantasy can be a challenging genre to write, especially when one is attempting to tell a story that will evolve over a long time. It can be difficult to ground characters in settings that are so different from the world we ourselves inhabit but this book absolutely does that.
I am reviewing this after having read 2 chapters and there's a reason for that: I want to stack up at least a few more chapters so I can read in one go.
Yes, that is how much I like it.
Firstly, the opening chapter introduces us to our MC who I am going to call Jeyvedir in this review (I know the spelling is probably wrong but stick with me here.).
While I was slightly confused at first with his fascination for food, I quickly adapted to the feeling that this was a quirk of his, something that makes him seem human.
His friendship with Rvas is the same. What sets him apart though, is the fact that he has ambition, one that maybe far more overreaching than he himself realizes.
Him being from the countryside is something I am curious about. How did he come to wish to become the one who led his country, the Krratul? And even more importantly, why?
I love the way we see the magic of this world in the first chapter. The idea that magic leaves a notch, a wound, on reality is something I find fascinating.
Rraos is also an interesting character. A seemingly deviant playboy who happens to be much more than he seems.
I still want to see how the story plays out but this is a very solid beginning.
Special mention to the fact that names and words are explained with pronunciations if you hover over them. Adds a lot of flavour to the text.
The use of the technique mentioned above also helps introduce lore in a more natural way.
Overall, I am extremely interested to see how this pans out. I have a tenuous relationship with the genre but I want to actually read this.
