- AiLovesToGrowRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Being upfront, Ri is a friend. I think the story has begun to take off as of the third chapter. Lots of amazing possiblities moving forward and I can't wait to see what happens next. I particularly am enjoying the dialogue, lots of nuances that require more than one read through to pick them all up. Great job!
- Eric VanderlipRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The Hidden Eyelight follows the story of Chantria Keita, a young woman trapped with her two sisters in an abusive relationship with her uncle Ayele in a fantasy world. A chance meeting with a soldier provides an opportunity to escape the jealous man.
Style: a consistent perspective and smooth writing. Excellent descriptions bring the world to life. However, the author doesn't use the past perfect which can make determining chronology in certain parts difficult. Style still excellent overall.
Story: Conversation and events flow naturally. An extraordinary care has been given to every facet of the worldbuilding and lore. Chantria conflict with vile "guardian" drives the plot forward.
Grammar: Easily readable. The minor mistakes do not detract from the story (except perhaps the past perfect issue).
Character: Chantria makes a compelling, sympathetic protagonist. The rest of the cast is just as vibrant and well-developed in all the best ways (Chantria's uncle is an instantly hatable villain). The writing expertly coveys what characters are feeling. Great character development.
Conclusion: I recommend Hidden Eyelight because it's a gripping tale in a fascinating unique fantasy world. You'll soon find yourself rooting for Chantria, and dreading what her uncle might do. Definitely a fun read. - Jack0fheartRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Hidden Eyelight is a beautifully written novel with a captivating story that keeps you engaged throughout. Story score 5/5: The story is captivating and full of surprises, taking the reader on an emotional rollercoaster. The author has crafted a world that is rich in detail, and the story is expertly woven together.
Grammar score 5/5: The writing is clear and easy to read, making the story accessible to all readers. The author's use of language is beautiful, and the writing is free of errors.
Character score 5/5: The characters in Hidden Eyelight are complex and well-developed. Chantria is a strong and determined protagonist, and the other characters are equally well-crafted, each with their own unique story.
In summary, Hidden Eyelight is a fantastic read that is sure to captivate anyone who enjoys immersive fantasy stories. I would highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a compelling and thought-provoking read! ♥ - JaffaJessie ( J.L.Rabone )Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0The advance warning for this one is not just for safety, it's something every person should take note of if they have a sensitive stomach. Despite this, I would recommend this novel to anyone who can handle that, it is a fantastic representation of the psychology of trauma.
Beautifully written, this story emaculates the trauma of abuse in a fantasy world with an interesting concept of finding your other half through the joining of a soul. The world is vibrant, detailed, and interesting alone to keep me intrigued. However, it is the story of the MC and her suffering that you follow from a mature voice that really made me feel for this novel.
Style: This is third-person prose and it often refers to past tense. The pacing is well set and suits the situation to every unsettling new bit of information that is given to the reader. The description is very detailed and clearly written by someone who has a good command of the English language.
Grammar: A few typos, but who doesn't when publishing without an editor? Nothing derails from my reading experience or detracts from the story in any way.
Characters: The psychology of the MC is thought out, researched, explained by the author in comments, and incredibly real. All of her actions are frustrating, but sadly, very relatable for someone who has gone through the trauma she has. The author makes sure to cross-research her MC's reactions to ensure she captures them correctly and it really shows. Truly, this is where this novel shines. - strigidae713Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0A story of a woman with a mysterious origin. We start off where she has her fair share amount of past behind her muddled past. The first chapter told you mainly about the background and her origin. The later chapters try to uncover the mysteries she hides from people.
Style:
When I used to read old, well-written, and long fantasy novels, this brought a lot of memory and joy when I read it. Unlike most stories here, the author makes sure to use a verbose style, which is rare nowadays.
Grammar:
Nothing that I note of. Mainly using British spelling; I was surprised to see one here. Nothing to report because I'm not an editor.
Story:
Romance? Fantasy? Or a mix of both? I get the fantasy setting and all, but I love it when fiction, or should I say, magic takes more role in the story. Here it's just a background. But kudos to me because this is the first romance novel I read, and I feel invested in the story even without magic blasting.
Character:
A deep research to a psychological study. Each character has a story; you can even feel them with only six chapters available.
Overall, I love this story and consider myself hooked! - Arlen K.Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5Overview
First of all, I want more!
This isn't an action heavy story, or something that ends in a cliff hanger at every chapter (although Spoiler : ) but even then, I found myself binging this story,
This won't be everyone cup of tea, particularly if you're wanting to avoid sexual content, as the psychological elements of it plays a fair amount in the story so far.
But if you like brillaiant descritpitve writing and character development, then this is for you.
Story
The story revolves around the union (the meld) of man and woman, and follows (to me atleast) a traditional view of the family unit; where the men are the primary caretakers and the woman have their own equally important responsibilites.
No it's not a love story (not yet) - there's magic, drama and trauma here.
We follow the story of a young girl of marrigable age, who's been shielded from finding her match. Men are unscrupulous afterall - atleast, that seems to be what has been ingrained into her.
After a fairly uncomfortable experiance and getting married in the most bizzare way, we learn that not everything is we were first told.
Events follow a logical and chronological order. I really like how the author weaves in her past trauma into the story, giving the short flashbacks similar to how one might've experiaced it in real life.
Though there aren't many 'action' scenes in the sense of fighting, the tension and threat of violence is always there, particulaly within a certain household and by a certain man, whom you will come to hate.
There's not enough chapters for an overall story arcs (yet), but there are certainly signs of character arcs already beginging, particularly with the MC. She's still skittish, and says the absolute minimum, but from the initial chapter of where i viewed the melding as evil incratnate to now, where both me and her dont think it's the be all and end all.
The overall premise of the story is great. It's using the whole idea of "the eyes are windows into your soul" and "signfic - ElaraRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This story made me very uncomfortable, but that is of course by design, as far as I can tell.
This is a good story, but I would warn every potential reader that it is not for everybody. I have a rather broad taste and a high tolerance when it comes to narrative, plot and genre, but even I wasn't completely on board with this. What I found more disturbing than the rape and torture was the psychological damage that was left on the MC. Every interaction the MC has is marked by her warped personality. This is great from a pure story telling and writing point of view, but also had the effect that I was shaking my head half the time while reading, thinking to myself: "What the fuck are you doing, MC?"
The worst thing is that the action of the characters are not even unrealistic. I can perfectly imagine somebody in MC's situation reacting exactly in the manner she does in the story. This only makes the experience more frustrating as well as disturbing. Anyway, that's enough of a disclaimer, I think. Let's get to it:
Story: The story is interesting! I enjoyed the world building and the premise so far. The world seems unique and there is much more to discover, even if world building takes a clear backseat to character development. The story is, in my opinion, largely character driven.
Style: The style is good as well. I enjoyed the pacing, and the unsettling nature of every interaction and conversation sets the mood perfectly for the kind of story this clearly wants to be.
Grammar: Some minor mistakes, but for the most part ok.
Character: This is where this story really shines. I feel like the characters are by far the most important part of the story. There was clearly a lot of effort and thought invested into making the characters as interesting and lifelike as possible, and it shows. Great job! - Golenishchev AndreyRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Opening: The first chapter is intriguing. The author perfectly reveals the world and the main character (a little more below).
Story: To tell the truth, the story has captured my attention since the description. Something new, interesting. Unique worlds always attract.
But the further I read, the more I realized how distant the subject of the narrative was to me, namely, a dystopian world in which there is oppression of female society by men and attempts to adapt in this cycle of chaos, to escape.
The story is interesting, I like how the author keeps the reader, even someone like me, in suspense. From the first minutes, as Chantria met with three soldiers and to the denouement (I don't want to reveal any spoilers).
Style: The narrative style seemed very close to me: good and long descriptions, diluted with competent dialogues. There is nothing more to add. It's good.
Characters: The main character Chantria, seemed to me a curious character. She has a kind of attractive magic, mystery and at the same time subtlety and vulnerability. What can't be said about her uncle Ayele. He's terrible in all the manifestations of this word. Moreover, from the first chapter he seems just bad, why he is the way he is, is not very clear to me, although I have always been attracted to negative characters, but only if they have a personal history and motivation to do certain actions. In general, the fact that some of the characters, such as a soldier with friends, are bad (well, more precisely, they behave badly within our reality, in that reality it is a common thing), does not repel, I just would like to see this topic more open.
Conclusion: In conclusion, I want to say that to all those who are looking for books with a utopian world, with a female character and a difficult fate, I can safely recommend this work. It's good, but not for me (subjectivity). - Septic_RedRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Hidden Eyelight is a great story to read to begin your day.
It contains a lot of descriptions, which you do not see often on web novels from this platform or on others.
Characters that seem believable with stores that, in my opinion, can be taken from real life. Good thing the author did not take too much inspiration of the case of the Austrian who trapped his own daughter in basement for almost two decades and used her to make babies who were trapped in that basement for one of his sick experiments.
I did not read all of the chapters, but I can assure you reader, the first three chapters are good. - GuthanRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5I'll start off with my first impressions. Firstly, this story made me feel quite uncomfortable on first read. The MC's sexual assault is very realistic and uncomfortable to read about. Honestly, reading stuff like this can be a bit depressing for me at times. It was quite gripping and I found myself falling into the world. I do love dark fantasy fics.
Style score 4.5/5. The style was decently good. The scene for me flowed one from to the next. The scenes were described well with the exception of a few parts where the tension falls flat.
Grammar score 5/5. I'll admit I was too immersed in the story to really go over this well. I didn't need to stop and do a readover, so there wearn't any obvious mistakes I found.
Story Score 4./5. There's something deeply unsettling about this plot. The world this story takes place it requires people to "meld" to get their magic and have kids. The world building for this is superb, although I'll admit I am skeptical about the long term viability of this kind of reproduction. Personally, I don't think this is a sustainable method for a population, but I'll accept that this is handwaived for plot reasons.
Character score 5/5. Everyone is in character. The characters depicted so far are very realistic. This is really good for making a gripping tale, but for me I find too much realism can be a bitter pill to swallow. The characters depicted are acting and reacting exactly as they should in a real life situation, and that might turn viewers off who want things to not suck for all involved.
