- Apollo149Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0A great premise in a complex world. The basic idea of a regressor is a character who dies in the present and gets sent back in time, and now they can start over. Here's an interesting twist to it, The Regressor of the Regressor Elimination Agency, a whole agency exists whose sole purpose is to eliminate such people. Hans, a top-notch regressor hunter gets sent 15 years into the past after being killed while protecting his wife from a revenge-seeking regressor. It is a pretty fun take to the whole regressor idea.
Style: Easy follow. The style for the most part has a good amount of description and compliments the pacing of the story very well. The strength of the story is the gradual reveal of the intricacies of worldbuilding that at first sight may be underestimated. The writing style is incredibly engaging and easy to read. There are lots of vivid descriptions and moments that bring the world to life. The dialogue between characters is natural.
Spoiler: I was going to mention something about having a super skill so early could be a problem for pacing but I think it is balanced with the three-month coma. Plus thinking about it could have some fun story tools for jumping time. Like a lot can happen in three months, in the end, I think there is more than a fair downside to stopping the hero from becoming completely broken.
Grammar: Like the style, it does the job and there are no glaring issues. I saw perhaps two or three very minor grammatical issues. Nothing that wrecks the story. The author also seems responsive to feedback, which is always great to see
Character: Hans is an interesting character, that I simultaneously root for and dread that he'll fall to whatever darkness is out there as he's now a regressor.
Overall, I'd recommend giving this a read if you like stories about regression! - DuvilRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A great premise in a complex world. I love regressor stories, and this one dares to do something new! As a litrpg it is so far lacking, but there are hints that the litrpg system is more important than it seems...
Style:
Decent. I wonder if the early chapters were written in a bit of a rush, because a quick once-over could greatly improve the flow of each sentence. While an editor would be a marked improvement, I think simply rereading and editing as you go could be good.
Grammar:
Good! While the grammar could also use a bit of editing, it is overall pretty fine.
Story:
The shining jewel of this story is its story! A world with complex systems and power systems is combined with the unique premise of a regressor who was part of a notorious agency that kills regressors. There is the usual intrigue of regressor stories, which is only as effective as an author's knowledge of their story; the author of this story knows what they want to do!
I have some gripes in the later chapters. A 3 month coma is a tough sell, and unless the next few chapters explore Hans's mental state, this is a dangerous road to tread on. Also, while I initially thought I would hate Hans revealing his status as a regressor to PP, I think I am fine with it. Though, I feel the interactions in that chapter could be cleaned up to feel more natural.
Character:
Pretty good! Hans is an interesting protagonist, and this early on, there are few characters that can be said to feel as complex or interesting. Hans's group of friends is okay, PP is pretty great, Gabriel is alright, and so on. As each character is given more time to shine, I believe they will become interesting and fun characters.
Overall good stuff! A bit bumpy at times, but with a bit more intensive editing process, this awesome premise successfully sticks the landing! - MelantheRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0There's a fair few of stories about regressors, and quite a bit of those happen to be here on this site. However, this is the first story I've seen with an agency dedicated solely to the eradication of regressors, and I think it's a genius take. In a world where regression is possible, can you imagine how disruptive a regressor could be to decent society?
Another thing I find interesting about this story is its setting. There's some LITRPG elements, yes, but I find myself drawn to the urban fantasy of the setting. I'm curious about the rules of the world, and the history of regressors and the agency to kill regressors in this world.
In regards to grammar and style, I think the author would benefit from an editor or proofreader. However, it's not difficult to read the story, so it isn't a punishable offense in my opinion. What's really important here is that I noticed the grammar improving as the story moved on! Later chapters are better written than earlier chapters, and that's a trend I like to see.
Overall, I'd recommend giving this a read if you like stories about regression! Great work, and I look forward to reading more from the author. - JoJoTKobeRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5A world where regressors are not only widely and publically recognized, but also deemed as enough of a threat as to warrant an entire agency dedicated to eliminating them. I really like the premise and concept of the setting! I'm interested in seeing how the regressed Hans navigates the world he's in. I'm especially interested to also learn more about the world itself, how the Agency works, its history, etc. There's a lot of potential for an engaging world as well as a compelling story to be told based on what I've read so far.
The writing as pretty straightforward and to the point, and it works well with how relatively fast-paced the story has been told so far.
I'm also interested in learning more about Hans based on how he's been depicted in the story so far, though the other characters haven't been fleshed out so far. Would like to see more of Hans' inner thoughts and monologue though to flesh him out more as well.
Grammar based on first few chapters definitely needs some work but it's not to a degree where its disruptive, mostly small mistakes such as missing punctuation for dialogue and such. Some slight fixes and it'll be all good. - Luca DRRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5So, this is an interesting take on the whole 'regressor' meta that's been floating around lately. It follows the adventures of, you guessed it, a regressor who also happens to work and want to be working again for an agency that kills said regressors.
The whole premise is interesting, and while it has not been explored much yet, I feel like it will be source of tension and conflict later on that will be interesting to see. It does add the latent feeling of something could go wrong at any moment, provided that the author does not go too thick with the plot armor for the main character. So far I did see some plot armor, so please do not overdo it okay?
As for the character, I like him. The others are not nearly fleshed out enough to give a review of them and I hope this will change in time. However, it's not a problem since it leaves space for the story to breathe.
Style and story are good. The style is clean and gets to the point, while the story is interesting and hints at a good worldbuilding behind the scenes that I am interested in reading more about.
Grammar is the weak point: there are some typos that survived the review of the chapters and sometimes they take away from the experience. - Rookie12Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5This review is based on the eight chapters that were available at the time.
Before you we have quite an interesting story. You know the familiar plot of "a character dies in the present and gets sent back in time, and now they can start over?" Well, here's an interesting twist to it: A whole agency exists whose sole purpose is to eliminate such people. You pop up from the future, they stop you. Lethally. Why, you ask? Well, in addition to simply being sent in time, these people also get magic powers and a "system" (for those unaware, the system is usually used in LITRPG type stories as a way to power up) to boot! Of course these people would try to "correct" the world.
The main hero is one of the people who hunt such people. However, due to some unexpected events, he himself ends up being sent into the past. Now he has a choice. Either he does his duty and ends himself to prevent untold devastations or... Or he may try to live his life again, trying to save people. Will he use the system and fully break the rules? Or will he stick to his principles and only use what agents can use? Read and find out!
The worldbuilding. It is a mix between the real world and the magic world. The magic is very common in the setting and blends rather well into the story. Aside from that, it is our typical everyday world.
Style. There are some problems, the MC sometimes does not fully explain why this or that technique or magic is so impressive, or when he knows something from the future, it is not really well conveyed to the reader. But overall, it still does a very good job.
Story. It is an interesting take on the "redo" type of story so far. Rather than lording over everyone, the MC tries to blend in and live his life. So far, I like the premiere.
Grammar. A few mistakes here and there, nothing serious. Given time, the author's style will improve, and they'll be gone forever.
Characters. Here is a bit harder for me to tell. On one hand, the MC is interesting. On the other hand, the o - AJ FluffRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The premise of people coming back after death is incredibly compelling, particularly with the threat of being hunted down afterwards. There's backstory and flashback details worked into the "present-past" narrative, with ages and times included to avoid timeline confusion (much appreciated). We get a sampling of the kind of baddies Hans (MC) has gone up against, as well as how he's driving the present off the rails of the future almost immediately. Guess the future isn't set in stone here. Intriguing.
Hans is an interesting character, that I simultaneously root for and dread that he'll fall to whatever darkness is out there as he's now a regressor. I'm docking points though for inconsistency: Hans plays it cold as ice in his normal everyday, then pulls off excited newbie when he has to, only to lose his cool at the drop of a hat. Seriously, for government officials, people scream at each other way too much.
There's some elements of litrpg, but the system takes more of a backseat to the setting, which is very urban, leaning to the superhero side of the spectrum. Puts me in mind of Vicious by VE Schwab.
Style and grammar could use some polishing. Some sentences just don't make sense where they are, while others hang empty like something got accidentally deleted. But with some polishing up, this could be a phenomenal read, especially with such a promising premise and really hard-hitting action sequences. - CapaluchuRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Let me start by saying this was a Review Swap. I struggled in Chapter 1 but I had made a committed. I had planned to stop at 10k words, aka Chapter 5. When I got there, I did not want to stop. I passed through 15k, then 20k, and kept on until I had finished what was posted so far. So from a rough start, this story kept getting better and better.
STYLE: The author plays his facts close to his chest (which usually I am not a fan of). You don’t have to wait too long until the tale begins to unfold. There are flashbacks but given that time is an important and obvious feature of this story they are easy to follow and appropriate.
STORY: Even at 20k words, the story is still taking shape. This is a slow burn mystery not an action romp. The action that is here is well written but it is the history that is the focus.
GRAMMER: Good. There are some typos but nothing too bad.
CHARACTERS: Here we have a mixed bag. Many characters scenes see someone go from normal emotions to explosive in seconds flat. On the other hand, the author does take the time to give us a good feel for who everyone is, with small nuances and details that make the cast come alive.
Overall this story is one that you should try. The first action sequence is very dynamic but a bit baffling. It is that way on purpose. Once you start following young Hans forward it really draws you in. - A V DalcourtRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0This story has an interesting concept, an Agent who works for a government institution who hunts down Time Travelers. In the middle of a fight that changes the course of his life, he finds himself propelled through time back into his younger self. His job now, correct the wrong that will occur in his future while also retracing his path through life all the avoid detection.
The tension is intense particularly when he’s surrounded by the government agents. This element kept me reading onward, anticipating that he would reasonably avoid detection by the skin of his teeth.
The author does a good job upping the conflict between the MC’s motivations and his personal feelings which often conflict with his end goal. How these seemingly small actions will drastically cause a butterfly effect through out his life has yet to be seen, but it’s definitely something I’m looking forward to reading more about.
There’s a chapter that has some LitRPG elements, but then the idea promptly drops off as though forgotten. I’m not one who feels LitRPG should be default, but I do wish he’d either lean into it, or drop it entirely, especially since the story works just fine conceptually without it.
