“You sure about this?” I looked dubiously up at the towering gate in front of us, surrounded by trees.

Hector shrugged. “Did you have another destination in mind?”

“Not a city?” I suggested without much hope.

Hector narrowed his eyes at me. “Where else do you suggest we find work? We’re soldiers. Besides, this one has trees. I thought you liked trees.”

I scowled up at the massive redwoods like they had personally offended me. “Cities don’t deserve trees.”

At that moment, I never would have guessed that I would still be there two years later, holding the rank of Captain and investigator, willing to lose everything for the people within its walls, and plunged into a conspiracy that threatened to take all that I loved.[Completed!]

Let me start off with saying, this is really dang good. I want to read a series or three set in this world. Doesn't always have to be this main character as the focus of course but its been a great read.
Story: 4.6 for me.
The World building is great here, so many neat things that make you would just how deep does things go. What is the true history?
Characters: 5 for me
The characters really sold this one for me. The dialogue, the motives, how they interact, bounce off of one another, and then change by doing so. Its fantastic.
Grammer: 4
There are a few mistakes I noticed typos/wrong tense sorta thing. Not a huge problem but I have to knock off some points for it somewhere lol.
Style: 4.7 for me
This style really worked well for me. The main character is of course a huge draw but I enjoyed myself even when they weren't the focus. There where a few times when I was a bit confused about the order of events/what happened/why someone did what they did but none if it was enough to hurt my enjoyment.
I would rate this as 4.7-4.8~ I agree that its ridiculously hard to get a perfect 5/5 rating since there is always going to be something you dislike/want changed/or wish it was expanded on but this was a great time.
This is easily the best offering I have found so far that is not super popular on RoyalRoad so far but should be popular! This was a blast to read and I would be glad to read more from this author.
Fair warning though you have set my expectations to be very high for any other stories you make!
