Description

Estella, Anja and Natalia Kendrick are three normal university students living in the fairly unassuming town of Angel Bay, Australia. However, when their town comes under attack by a supernatural evil, they are each bestowed a set of special powers and equipment, and they and their closest friends (and a couple of aliens) have to band together to stop this mysterious threat.

Unfortunately, due to an even worse threat approaching the Earth, they're cut off from any additional aid, and have to deal with the problem themselves, along with the intervention of a secretive government agency trying to keep the paranormal under wraps and a nosy reporter trying to get her hands on her breakout scoop. And then there are other supernatural elements coming out of the woodwork...

Henshin Sisters is a scifi-fantasy-hybrid story, inspired by anime, comics, video games and Brandon Sanderson novels. In particular, a more mature take on "henshin heroes", including tokusatu and magical girls, with a heavy emphasis on worldbuilding, and a bit of naughtiness here and there.

So, what we have here are three sisters, pretty, confident (well, apart from some hidden trauma one sister has it seems), sexually ilberated and a lot of fun.
One day an evil emperor, who is seemingly straight out a classic show, turns up to rule the earth, starting by turning people into his minions, black goo style. The three sisters in question, all end up being chosen to be heroes by some aliens who are keeping an eye on earth, and via magical swords, alien symbiotes and high-tech nano AI's, they end up becoming transforming superheroes with a combo japanese/american flavour.
Their background is obviously deeper than they knew, as is the worlds' and the greater universe at large, and they must navigate it safetly, all the while having the kind of uninhibited, good clean fun any sexy superheroine needs *wink*
The story never portrays their gender-nonspecific sexual freedom as bad (which of course it isn't *smile*) so it's actually quite amusing to read about their lusty escapades. And in terms of the story itself, it feels a bit like something you'd find in City of Heroes/Villians, which is also no bad thing.
All in all, quite a different story to the usual on here, and a lot of fun so far!

This is character-driven story at it's finest. I instantly really liked the three main characters (sisters). It felt like there was one to fit whatever type of personality you might be looking for in a novel. I, personally, liked Anja the best as she obviously has a mysterious/dark past and is a little (lot?) sassy and forthright sometimes. Very relatable. We meet their love interests too and a circle of friends becomes instantly obvious. 5 stars just for the characters, hands-down.
There is a lot of humorous banter between the group. ...And, then, the mystery and horror of shadows and downright escape scenes as the story progresses. There's this immediate air to it that really came through in the writing.
As far as the story, like I mentioned, it is definitely carried by the characters, so I took off a little for overall story score, but I really feel that the author is going somewhere big with this and didn't let it affect the overall score. The book feels 'epic' in a tangible way, and I really hope it does "go big" for the author. There were no glaring grammatical errors or anything of that sort.
It's a really enjoyable read for those looking to dive into some characters' lives and feel the thrill of a mystery. Well done!
