Description

Time is an unrelenting march. The past was never meant to be reached.

Time is also valuable. The past contained a fortune waiting to be reaped.

Consequences should have been expected. Pentacore did not care to consider them. The shareholders, the investors, saw a profit to be made.

When the world started to crack, it was already too late. The past and the present had begun merging in an ever-expanding array of pentagons. Each contained a different time sought by the company.

The Fracture would kill millions. Since it began six years ago, it has spread over the majority of North America.

Pentacore established a force of Time Officers to deal with their mistake. With the use of time-based hedronic weaponry, mission groups have set out to destroy each fracture'sbulbto restore the world to the present day.

Time, however, is unrelenting. It will continue to march until its pentagonal pattern covers the entirety of the planet.

Cade and his Time Officer team are Mesozoic specialists, fighting against this inevitably. He comes to learn about the crumbling world around him and a proposed mission to end all missions. But perhaps the mission isn't the noble one he wants to believe it is.

Special forces fighting dinosaurs - got your attention yet? The author certainly got mine.
From the very first chapter, I found this story extremely entertaining. It vividly paints a post-apocalyptic world reclaimed by nature, teeming with prehistoric monsters driven mad by a time-warping infection. If that's not unique, I don't know what is.
There's a lot to praise in this story. The fast-paced, exciting, and often visceral action sequences, such as the one we're immediately thrown into, are a highlight. However, what truly stands out is the compelling character drama that unfolds afterward. The uneasy tension between characters as they unwind after a deadly encounter, the palpable stress, the gnawing uncertainty, and the looming futility all create a brilliantly volatile mix of human interactions that leave me wanting more. The characters feel real - each flawed in their own distinct way, yet undeniably human - and tragedy always seems just around the corner.
The worldbuilding is equally intriguing. The author presents a world slowly unraveling as prehistory seeps into the present, with a shady corporation looming in the background while people struggle to survive the fallout. It's a bleak and fascinating setup, but also full of welcome surprises. The use of different prehistoric periods as distinct environments with their own fauna and flora offers plenty of opportunities to geek out. Without spoiling too much, I think it’s shaping up to be something quite special.
My only personal gripe so far concerns the pacing. The story is divided into parts, and the transition from Part 1 to Part 2 felt a bit jarring due to tonal and environmental shifts. I feel that Part 1 could have been extended a little to give the reader a better feel for the characters and their dynamics in the field. As it stands, it felt somewhat like an extended prologue… but that's simply my impression!
If I could add just one last thing, it’s that the synopsis doesn’t do the story nearly enough j
