I never read the previous book, so most of the worldbuilding and hidden lore are probably unknown to me. Still, at the grand scheme of thing, the worldbuilding is still good enough for those who've never read the previous book, and the fact that the Gods were among the people might one of the unique things I notice in this review. Still, good read. Style-wise, I couldn't think of any meaningful complain as far as I could think of as the point in which I've read the book.
Story
The thing is, I am not sure where this story is going. At one side, I am more than impressed about the worldbuilding, the various characters and their motivation and where it would take the story too, but I think I'm missing some of the information from the previous book at this point. Bottom line, it's not perfect merely because I don't have time to read the previous book, but I think those holes would be filled later if I read the previous book since this is the fourth book in the first installment.
Grammar: No complain
Character: I find it interesting that Kiyora, the protagonist, being a good figure at the end of the day with likeable characteristics. There are plenty of side characters which are described greatly. So far, no complain either. Still, I am not sure about the scale of the goal of the main character, since I haven't dugged much yet. - ArachnodollRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5STYLE
Jumping into this without reading the prior books, so perhaps some of the worldbuilding is lost on me, however I like that the political setting is realistically complex and we have a setting with plenty of factions vying for power in a world where the gods walk among mortals and cohort with them. Becoming a deity while dreaming is a fascinating concept that I applaud the author for writing well thus far.
STORY
Unfortunately I can't give top marks for the story, simply because I am unsure where the grander narrative is taking us. I've only read the first 10k words, so I'm sure much of that is building up to something greater, but given the sheer number of conflicts and nations we've been introduced to already it's hard to discern what the main character's goals are and how they will be achieved. However the vivid depictions and in depth description of the mortal characters close to her and what they desire is done well.
GRAMMAR
Not much to say here, everything seems to be in order. Sentences flow well and there are no spelling errors or misused punctuation. Perhaps a little too much dialogue for my taste but hardly relevant as a critique.
CHARACTERS
In 'The Dark Dreamer', I find an interesting contrast to how the majority of stories develop their characters. The first few chapters take Kiyora, the protagonist, on a journey around various parts of the world where plenty of side characters and foils are vividly described and partake in plenty of dialogue that gives the reader a window into their personality, however the main character herself seems to be lacking much time to grow on me.
Regardless, I am a huge fan of large scale epic fantasy stories which take time to set a realistic narrative and don't include factions with no real tangible goals for the sake of padding the story. Wholly recommend.
