- Lightbringer1234Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Fantastic story with an interesting take on the leveling up genre. The sci-fi is cool and the characters steal the show. Just the right mix of action and Humor!
The style is interesting, leaning heavily on sci-fi action and adventure, but with just the right mix of litrpg to keep things interesting. The pace is quick but the details are plentiful. The author builds a fun big world.
grammar didn’t seem bad at all, I saw some early reviews but the author is obviously taking the comments to heart and working to fix earlier chapters.
the characters shine, the MC Andrew is well rounded and working hard to make sure that he does everything he can to save his world. The side characters are where the story shines. Tiff the guardian AI is mysterious, CJ brings levity and comic relief, and the ship AI Elvis is hilarious
the story is fast paced and hooks you early, but doesn’t let up. New elements are added and the world is built out bringing bigger stakes as the story goes on
thumbs up! Give it a read! I can’t wait to see where the story goes. The author is obviously building a much bigger world than we see in the first few chapters. - mistyiles04Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I was hooked from the first chapter! The characters have personalities that pull you in from the start. Andrew's story line is absolutely riveting! The humor his character has had me rolling! I love that he was so hesitant in chapter one but his confidence, which was subtle in chapter one, has been fun to watch unfold. I also love that he loves things that most people can relate to, like the bacon. As I read,I was able to vividly picture the scenes as the author painted a wonderful and thrilling image with his words. I found myself feeling all the emotions! I was nervous, anxious, excited and at times sad.The grammar has progressively gotten better with each chapter but it is not anything that distracted me from the story line. I appreciate that the author incorporates real life situations with a fictional story line. There is humor all throughout the story. The relationships in the story remind me a lot of my own friendships. I did not think I would like science fiction but this one has me hooked! I I am wondering if the author has any other story lines he is working on or if this is the only work so far? As a high school teacher I am always looking for books that my students might like and this one was a huge hit. They have followed the work since chapter 1 was released. If you are a teacher or work around college and career students, I highly recommend this book! It will provide great discussion and my kids love being able to assume what adventure will unfold in the next chapter. I would love to see Andrew pick up a few more solid friends! CJ brought so many laughs!! I also can not wait to see if the romantic relationship takes off. I know this book will be a huge hit for anyone who likes science fiction or fiction in general. I cant wait for the rest to be released!
- Limitless SkyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall: I've loved the overall vibe of this story. I'm a sucker for sci-fi, and author did an excellent job incorporating it with Lit-RPG. The story is unique and I'm impressed by the premise behind all the events that occurred. Good job Author!
Style: I'm very much in favor of author's style. They've painted a very lifelike and immersive picture, often adding minor details that serve to engage readers.
Story: The best part of Havok Bringer. Lit-RPGs often tend to fall into a pitfall of unoriginality in terms of story and plot devices, and author has managed to avoid this issue. The readers are eased into the MC's life, and the greater context behind the story, without overwhelming them with information. The story progresses at a good pace, focusing on more than just battles. Moreover, the story's setting exposes the readers to a sense of adventure and thrill, adding to the immersive-ness.
Grammar: In the first few chapters, there were very minute errors, mainly in form of punctuations, but there were drastic improvements after only a couple chapters. The flow improved as well, with no obvious disconnects in sentences or paragraphs. Author is constantly improving their writing.
Character: The characters stand-out and aren't just molds of common clichés. Their personalities are displayed well through dialogue and actions, and they have obvious flaws that give them depth and a sense of realism. - Lucian T. EinarRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall: Havok Bringer is a promising debut that offers immense potential for thrilling adventures. While it has some room for improvement, it presents a unique blend of sci-fi and LitRPG elements that keeps readers engaged.
Style: The story strikes a good balance between providing vivid descriptions and not overwhelming the reader with details. As the protagonist's power grows, the prose evolves with him, making for an engaging read. The author takes care not to rush through action, devoting attention to creating compelling imagery.
Story: Havok Bringer's story is a standout feature. It takes the sci-fi apocalypse genre and infuses it with a unique twist. The consequences of the protagonist's actions in the "dungeon" have a real impact on his world, making it more than just another respawn scenario. While the initial chapters might seem dense, the plot and stakes are well-explained without feeling like an info dump.
Grammar: While there are some grammatical issues, particularly in sentence structure and dialogue, the author is actively working to address them. Once these issues are resolved, the story's quality is expected to rise significantly.
Character: The characters in Havok Bringer are a strong suit. The protagonist, Andrew, stands out as a relatable character with genuine reactions. Even the AI companions have depth and motivations, making them more than mere plot devices. Side characters like CJ provide humor and depth to the story.
In summary, Havok Bringer is a commendable first work with a lot of potential. The combination of sci-fi and LitRPG elements, along with well-crafted characters, makes it a captivating read. As the author continues to polish and expand the story, it promises to be an even more engaging experience for readers. Whether you're a fan of science fiction or just looking for a unique adventure, this story is worth checking out. - Pablo_BruinRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Reading Havok Bringer for the first time brought about a sense of nostalgia I couldn't really place at first. As I got through the early beats of world building and character chemistry, it began to grow more tangible but it wasn't until the MC of this story, Andrew, began to go about his initial tutorial that I realized what it is.
Reading T.A.L Deason's premiere entry to the genre reminded me a lot of my own introduction to the genre when I first read Aleron Kong's The Land. What I mean by that is that this is a very fast pace brand of story telling with just enough personality and world building to capture the reader's imagination and run with it. As these instances are concisely played out on the page, you watch within the negative space and are left to speculate where the story and the progression will go next. To me, that's the hallmark of a promising LitRPG where the invesment is twofold- first with the choices of the MC, second with the choices of their progression.
Much like the classic LitRPGs of the early days, this story is rife with humor and pop culture references (including a surprising amount of classic rock courtesy of the ship's AI). Deason hits a sweet spot by not letting the references be mere punchlines, but serving as anchors to an otherwise alien environment. For those out there who may be shy to Sci-Fi LitRPG, this should come as a reassurance that the story is very much grounded in relatable humor and easily accessible plot points.
Likewise, a very strong supporting cast includes a quantum entangled 'Galactic Social Worker', a quirky AI with a penchant for classic rock, and a friend from home all have great chemistry among themselves and with our protagonist Andrew. What I appreciate most while reading is that the supporting characters offer an outlet to Andrew's thought processes so that we aren't relegated to his internal dialogue as many other stories tend to do. In fact, their dialogue is on par with something I'd see on late night anima - RandomBlueCatRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Style:
1st person POV communicated with clarity as the story flows in an immersive and coherent manner. All the details the protagonist sees are all conveyed. The story introduces a character that will stick around to converse with the main character so it doesn't suffer the issue of being filled with monologues.
Story:
Great chemistry playing with the Sci-Fi and litRPG aspects. We jump straight into the action in a fun manner where we learn along with the protagonist as things start to go down as well as his motivations. The story is probably the strongest aspect of Havok Bringer.
Grammer:
As the author and others have mentioned, there are a few grammar issues(Not spelling), but it doesn't break the flow while reading. It is still perfectly readable in a concise manner.
Character:
As the story unfolds from a 1st-person perspective, we get a pretty clear characterization, as we can hear Andrew's thought process when making his decisions. Andrew is a big guy with big hands, with his character being well-presented and staying consistent. Other characters such as his friend Craig seem to be more than background characters that just revolve around the protagonist, with the initiative to get the hell out of dodge when things don't seem right.
Overall:
Great story from a talented author, even more so when we consider this is the author's first story. Definitely try it out, I believe it will only get better as the authors improve as they write more. - ReckWellRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I am really enjoying Havok Bringer. The story starts off with the normal end of the world... and it goes in a fun direction with the MC representing Earth in a intergalactic competition. It's not arena style which I appreciated though... instead they get a ship, form a party and head off into space for their first destination. The world is balanced, for every overpowered boon there's a corresponding curse... and this helps keep the MC interesting even though he has some OP perks.
I'm going to keep reading and you should start! - Five6212Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5Gosh, I love the premise. The story follows Andrew, a thirty year old engineer who finds himself suddenly take away from his world and thrust into a Gamelit space dungeon where he has to defeat monsters and rank up in order to save his world which was on the verge of destruction. Very neat I say.
Style: The author’s descriptions are solid enough to give you enough idea of what is going on in each scene. It lets you play it all out in your head and still gives you enough room to picture it out the way you want it to be. The style is done well and it’s written in a very good way that will not make the story jarring for your read.
Grammar: Now this is where I stumbled upon some issues, but no biggy as the author improves further down the chapters, but if you’re here for the story and not to nitpick, then I’m sure it will not affect your reading that much. It didn’t affect mine, if it’s any assurance.
Story: Like I said before, beautiful premise and the author is, so far, executing it well enough. The world seems to be quite expansive, so I promise you that you’re in a spaceship ride for the Worldbuilding. There are a lot of things not made known enough in the world yet and we get to find that out with our MC Andrew, and even the A.I Tiff, I don’t think she knows it all too (or maybe she’s just pretending? Well we’ll get to find that out by reading). Anyway, solid story and I can say you’ll enjoy it.
Character: Now this is the cherry topping of this story. Well done characterization, even the A.Is feel like genuine people not just robots, and I see that as a good thing for the story. Well done author, it was nicely done, and I hope you keep doing them well!!
All in all, a good story that I can gladly recommend. - Solus-SolaceRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Style: Finding the sweet spot of just enough description to paint a vivid picture, but not too much to distract from the purpose is difficult to do, but this story does exactly that. As the MC progresses in power throughout the story, the level of prose likewise follows him. Even for things we are already introduced to, the author doesn't just skip over things to get to the action, but devotes word space to really focus on creating a compelling image rather than just rushing through.
Story: I admit that I'm not a huge fan of the sci-fi apocalpyse genre, but this story takes that premise and does something wonderfully unique with it. Unlike a lot of LitRPGs, the MC's transport to another world isn't just a respawn for him, but has actual ramifications on his homeworld based on his performance in this "dungeon." While a quick skim of the first chapters may give you the impression that this is a dense hard sci-fi piece that demands a lot from the reader, I found the plot and stakes quite well-explained (and shown) in such a way that didn't feel like an infodump or awkward exposition.
Grammar: The grammatical issues tie in a bit to the writing style, particularly in regards to sentence structure. My biggest gripes with the grammar concern dialogue. Often two characters will have lines in the same paragraph, leading to a bit of confusion as to who is currently speaking. It doesn't affect the overall experience too much, but it is quite noticable to a casual reader.
Character: Each one of the principal cast feels unique and defined, even in the first lines of dialogue. The MC Andy has reactions that feel appropriate for the situations he finds himself in...Tiff feels like she genuinely wishes to help out Andy, but also has motivations of her own as an advanced AI with a developed persona...Elvis seems like a completely different class of AI, but still as a character, rather than just a tool...Craig immediately gives you that sort of "loyal but foolhardy best friend" nakam - thendavesaidRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5Way too much plot armor for my tastes. It's not even the OP gear that the MC gets right off the bat, because every OP MC needs a thing that makes them better than their challenges. My issue is the MC makes decisions with no thought that just seem to be right every time.
Deciding to rescue his AI's mainframe when he's just level 3, instead of waiting til he's higher level despite the guards at the facility being just ~lvl 10. Then along the way there's a level up spot, and then we take a POV cut where we find out that the AI was ordered to betray him but she didn't because of his reckless decision to rescue her.
There are other moments like that. It's just way too convenient the way his reckless actions work out without him suffering any backlash from them.
There's also the issue that the two regular Joe humans just dive right into this situation where their own survival as well as the survival of the entire human race is on the line with seemingly no stress at all. The various interactions between characters just seem slightly unreal to the point I felt an uncanny valley effect while reading them.
None of the aliens seem alien at all. They just seem like humans in alien bodies. By that I mean, their motivations are human, their behavior is human, and their interactions are human. Even their physical descriptions are various flavors of humanoid.
Action scenes seem to be missing some cause and effect, where I don't quite understand how we got from point A to point B.
For example, the tutorial boss being 5 levels higher than the MC but being so slow that the MC can hit it 4-5 times with a powdery sock before it moves so fast as to grab him by the neck. Why is it slow, then super fast?
There's also a spider fight where he is holding two super advanced OP knives and then gets grabbed by a dog size spider, then all of a sudden he's tearing the spider apart with his bare hands. Why didn't he just stick it with the pointy end?
There's also a scene where he uses his knives o
