- ShraccRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The author seems to take a sadistic joy in writing hard to read sentences, or uses a large language model. I honestly can't tell, it's consistent enough for to support the sadistic author theory as no currently available llm has the capacity to stay consistent for this long.
As a fellow review said: I need to go to dictionary just to understand those complicated words - loukasRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0a good Fantasy novel with a cool idea the magic system is fun and easy to understand the writing is good with no grammar mistakes you can really feel the love the author has put into the book
the only thing that I dislike is the over use of description at the start but that just me other people love description otherwise its a 10/10 book - hihdanielRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Immersive Style and Captivating Voice
this immediately draws you in with its strong prose style. The author's word choices effectively capture the setting and the character's mindset, creating a sense of immersion. The internal monologues provide a window into the protagonist's thoughts and motivations, allowing the reader to connect with them on a deeper level.
However, there are moments where these internal narratives could be streamlined. While some introspection is valuable for character development, occasionally it becomes a bit "internal" and could benefit from a touch more action or external dialogue to break up the introspection.
Compelling Narrative with Room for Enhancement
The story itself is engaging. The protagonist's actions are well-motivated and showcase their agency. However, similar to the internal monologues, there are times when the antagonists' motivations could be fleshed out or hinted at more subtly. While some readers might find the internal thoughts of antagonists skippable, a touch of internal struggle or backstory could add depth to these characters and heighten the overall conflict.
Technical Proficiency and Readability
The writing itself is well-edited with no glaring grammatical errors. The line spacing, while occasionally interrupting the reading flow during fast-paced moments, doesn't detract from the overall enjoyment.
A Character You Can Believe In
The protagonist's personality and actions feel believable and consistent with the setting. They are a well-rounded character with relatable struggles and motivations. This authenticity is what truly makes the story engaging and keeps the reader invested in their journey.
Overall Impression: A Promising Work with Room to Grow
this is a promising piece of work. The author demonstrates a strong grasp of language and character development. With some minor adjustments to pacing and internal monologue, this story has the potential to be truly exceptional. I highly recommend it to readers who en - Nathan HowardRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0From my experience with most Xianxia, Wuxia, Cultivation, and Isekai genres. This was one of the most unique takes on either spectrum, that I have ever read. the Mix of Eastern and Western fantasy concepts, is one thing but the fact that both elements has been mixed so well and it becomes interconnected together is all props to the writer themselves.
The evident or presented magic system is also well written as is the characterization of each presented characters making them seperately driven and unique. I think its definetely one of the best originally written cultivation novels, and it delivers on its premises and promises.
The build-ups, expositions, and worldbuilding are wholely unique and worth the praise. As someone who loves and digs deep into a fiction's worldbuilding, this was definetely right up my alley! - PriyanshhhhhhRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0It’s a well done take-on the reborn into a fantasy world with a twist regarding the mc’s origin. It’s for you if you like xianxia and magic and are fans of books like mushoku tensei and beginning after the end.
The highlight of the read definitely is the world and the lore surrounding the family of the mc.
It is not long enough yet to see whether i will end up really liking this story or not because i just feel the story has yet to truly crescendo. It’s still in the phase of the story where the mc is growing up and has finally started facing real trouble. If you want something to occupy your time for a while with an interesting plot then this is your cup of tea as it was mine.
The stars are not indicative of my feelings on the story but it helps the algorithm so I am doing what I can. - Shiro YamadaRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Could you please not use complicated or archaic words in your novel? Sometimes it's hard for non english speakers like me to understand the scene and I need to go to dictionary just to understand those complicated words. I think simple words that are commonly used and easy to understand are better
- ThisIsFictionRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Before diving directly into the review, I would like to explain a bit more about the story. We are quickly introduced to Xue Fang. Xue comes from a traditional Xianxia world and dies.
He then reincarnates into Darius's body. However, he is no longer in a traditional Chinese world; he is a high fantasy one.
This is the fundamental premise that drives the story.
The style is straightforward. Strong prose with good, detailed descriptions of each scene. Compelling narration of the main character’s thoughts and interactions with the surrounding world.
I liked the inclusion of some images throughout the novel. It might not be for everyone, but it gives the novel a unique style.
(The only detail I would change is the line spacing; paragraphs are too far apart.)
The introduction is rapid, and the reason we are in this new world is simple to understand. Because of this, the main character’s motivation is easy to understand.
What already makes it easier to see how he will act and understand his motivation is a Xianxia protagonist thrust into a High Fantasy world.
There are no errors, and nothing stands out.
So far, Darius is still the character most presented to us, the readers. He seems interesting and well-rounded. It’s still very early, but I would like to see a few more glimpses of his past.
It has a good premise and easy-to-read prose. However, it could speed up a bit more or add more conflicts to the beginning of the story. Overall, it has a lot of potential, and I’m interested in continuing to read. - MarkMRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Interesting characters so far, interesting premise (and not the typical reincarnation story … benevolent cultivator to mage/mana universe ), but a bit of a slow start to the story with a little less show and a touch more tell than I would find ideal. There are several large time skips through his childhood, including the immediate aftermath of the test, but that does not feel too unnatural. I admit to being curious as to the MC’s training decisions when currently off screen, however, prior to the test.
The cultivation origin world also appears to be far gentler and less blood soaked than is typical of the genre … apparently resulting in a thoroughly modern and sensitive MC that is atypical of his alleged xianxia/cultivation roots. For a change of pace, there is apparently more prejudice in the mana-based world of his reincarnation than in his home. That being said, I am very interested to see where the author will take this.
EDIT: Well, I'm out. I've seen where the author took this but I won't say more in the interest of avoiding spoilers. - Narrin DawaRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Update @ chapter 13.
This is story that plunges right into intense power struggles and a strongly illustrated and detailed world of cultivation. The prologue kicks off with a bang. I always enjoy the well-trodden twist of the protagonists journey shifting from the height of his power to a fresh start in the body of a baby — new start, established knowledge? Great foundation! It makes for useful contrast of wisdom and vulnerability. The detailed descriptions add a ton of depth, bringing to life the cultivation world and its battles, although at times, I found the prose a bit dense. In some action-packed scenes, trimming down the detail could’ve kept the pace sharper and more immersive. I do, however, enjoy the vocabulary used - especially the 'archaic', genre-specific and descriptive language beyond the basic grade-10 English plus xianxia-tropes that we see in many western xianxia.
The characters really stood out to me. Darius’ parents, Amara and Jarek, are instantly captivating, bringing warmth and strength that feels real and relatable. Even the villains of the prologue are fleshed out just enough to make them feel like genuine threats, though there are a lot of names thrown in early on. A little more gradual introduction might have made it easier to keep track of everyone at the start. Still, the reincarnation twist added an enjoyable touch, and offers a fun potential path-to-power and revenge!
Overall, Grimoire of Cultivation seems like an enjoyable read, especially for fans who are genre aware of cultivation/xianxia stories and who enjoy epic action and a world that feels both vast and deeply detailed. - Davey daveRoyal Road★★ 2.0It's an interesting premise if not original. However reading it is boring, every page is 90% filler, needless supposition and ornamentation. I think the first 4 chapters could be summed up in less than 5 sentences. I believe it to be heavily LLM done, as grammar and prose are very good, but the text is overly flowery while still being formulaic. If you can't skim read it's not worth it.
