- catterwallerRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I really like the central character! The quandary they find themselves in unfolds as he learns more. Good supporting characters too.
Reviews must be at least 50 words long, so I'm adding more verbiage. Better add another sentence to be sure. And maybe one more.
Still not long enough, so add bulk again. Reviews must be at least 50 words long, so I'm adding more verbiage. Better add another sentence to be sure. And maybe one more. Although not many chapters are currently available for the consumption of the masses(and myself), what chapters are out are all quite excellent and worth reading. Stop hesitating, and fulfill your destiny(your destiny in this case is reading this book if you didn't realize it)!

At the time I am writing this, there aren't a lot of chapters out, but I am all caught up and eagerly awaiting more. And that itch to click next is a good sign.
The author's prose is clean and descriptive without becoming flowery or dwelling on irrelevant things.
The characters either feel real or feel like they are becoming real (It's early in the story and we have only one PoV, it's hard to know other characters quickly). I really like our protag, and there are some interesting mysteries.
I feel like the pacing could be a little slower; I wouldn't mind a little bit more time to breathe simply because I want to see the cultivation system explored, but I can't say I've never done similar. Still, it feels just a bit hectic for now, so I am hoping for some more time to be reflective soon.
The grammar is pretty much perfect, the only thing I've seen that I'd change is because of different styles, neither is 'correct'. I prefer singular-s word possessives to end in s's, but the title is Magus' instead of Magus's. Different style guides conflict on this. If that's the worst I have to say about grammar/punctuation, I think the author is doing pretty damn good. :)
There's a potential romance, which I am generally in favor of, and it looks like it could be a good build-up. And I say potential because they could also vibe as friends (which is a good start to a relationship anyway). I am pretty sure it's not going to be the driving force of the story though, for those who want romance to be relatively low-key in their stories.
And really, I just like it. - RednyteRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Within the cultivation subgenre, it may be impossible to design a book that appeals more directly to readers. The MC powers up by reading! Feels very relatable.
However, that's just like writing a good headline. A solid premise for a story is not enough. This book follows through with excellent pacing and characters, near-perfect copy, as well as a unique and intriguing world -- both within the library and on the outside.
Without spoiling anything, the development of one and a half characters was very unexpected, and in a way I found pleasing and realistic to how personalities grow and change due to the people we surround ourselves with.
Also, it's easy on the eyes. I don't mind spelling and grammar errors, especially in serials, but you're not likely to find many here. The copy is extremely clean and flows well.
The only negative is that currently, the story could continue and many plotlines of interest to the reader are left incomplete.
That being said, I think the end of the current arc is a satisfactory enough endpoint that I would highly recommend a read to any fan of the genre regardless of whether or not the story ends up continuing. - Gameknight2169Royal Road★★★★ 4.0This story is indeed well-written, but I give it 4 stars because it lies to you about what it wants to be. The title makes you assume it’s going to be long bouts of cultivation, coming out of seclusion to do the stabby stabbies, then go back in to cultivate more with the insights you had.
But no - Oz is continually exploring and running around, with the bare minimum of reading. There’s not really any progression, just running around.
If that’s what you like, go for it. But I came here for what the title implied, and I didn’t get it, so I’m docking a star. - JOC1994Royal Road★★★★ 4.0First and foremost I'd like to say the author Is talented. His overall writing ability and the clarity of the picture he/she paints is elite. It's fun and easy to mentally follow along.
Grammer is also amazing, it's like there's an editor already working on every chapter.
Personally think then story is good, it's not for me because I think the MC is too much of a white knight. He wants to forgive and save everyone. I understand that there is to be development where the MC develops calluses on his heart, but this MC is a reincarnation. He already been through the struggles of a man, but yet we get a 2nd chance MC who either lived a sheltered life or Was unaware of the nature of mankind in his pastlife. After chapter 14 I realized this might not be for me because of his soft heartedness.
Also the library was seeming like a secondary aspect of the story. Minor problems pop up constantly where only the secondary characters, whom he is supposed to have issues with, are the only ones who can help fix.
He forgives them and allows them in a sacred space to solve issues they created. They become his primary source of info and he stalls his primary goal a bit too long for me.
I think the author should've showed what the potential of the library was give the readers a sample or something to look forward to before the stall tactics took place.
It's still very early in the novel and he does make you aware that it is a slow burn. I will try to read on if I find myself between novels.
But when this is published on Amazon the author won't have cliff notes telling readers to have patience. I think that's something worth considering.
This book, idea, content has huge potential and I really look forward to seeing when the line drops. Again I think the writer is talented so I am sure patience will pay off here. - PeteRoyal Road★★★★ 3.5Since I also read his previous big work I will compare it a bit with that. Master, This Poor Disciple Died Again Today took quite a few chapters until I really liked it so maybe the point will come with this one too. But imo Hui had one advantage, he was a major weirdo which can paper over some oddities.
First off expect a prodigy MC, as of now the story operates without any timeskip and we see every day. Meaning
MC rushes from zero to opening all his Meridians, absorbing the knowledge of a lot of books making up alchemical antidotes from scratch that work at least well enough, experimenting with a different dangerous variant of the magic system and using it in enchanting in just a few days.
Kinda absurd. He is of course still super weak in comparison with the world but his growth rate is high and everything he tries seems easy to him. Some readers like such MCs others don't, for me it is a bit too much.
Now some criticism, I feel like the MC often acts for plot not character reasons. Like he is aware he is in a dangerous position but tends to act with almost zero care. Maybe it is just who he is but I feel he is that way because it would be hard to progress in the super accelerated time frame the story works in if he was actually careful. Like getting allies would definitely take longer if he felt people out first and acted like someone who knows many want him dead and that most are much stronger than him. So he just doesn't i mean he has some protections but a) they aren't perfect and b) he still acts like that without his main one.
Like going with 3 quasi strangers into the world shard where he lacks the protection of the shield. One of them was rather sus another not the greatest guy to trust and all three stronger than him
To come back to the This Poor Disciple Died Again Today comparision, this story is more serious but verisimilitude wise (for me at least between MC behavior and prodigyness and everything happening in a few days) I would put it on comedy sto - ImhaysRoyal Road★★★ 2.5Based on the synopsis and title alone, we get a rough image of an MC who is trying his best to defend his new library from the world while still being a nobody himself, being his way of strength is by reading a lot of books.
That is exactly what you will get when you read this story, with the added extra of MC unable to adjust properly to being in a different world with different settings and rules, having trouble concentrating, and of course, minimal reading.
Spoilers below
In a gist, continuing from the synopsis above, the story follows a reincarnated MC who was an adult in his previous life, yet making naive mistakes here and there. The chapters mostly consist of fixing one problem to the next, mostly due to said mistakes, then making other mistake, rinse and repeat. MC is painfully trusting of everyone, despite everyone in the new world warning him and him coming from a world where a little bit of caution is normal, he has none.
The main part of book reading itself were actually sparse. The action parts could also be improved.
Up until chapter 54, there were barely any plot advancements since the MC barely has time to do his own thing (read) before he gets distracted, again. It feels like the main plot revolves around the MC solving problems (problems he could have solved with actually having power) rather than MC reading books to gain power.
Overall, if you prefer a slow burn, slice of life fiction, give it a try. - ReadingSnakeRoyal Road★★ 1.5As of chapter 106, the author has announced Grand Magus' Library will not be leaving Hiatus and while there will be a few more chapters on the author's Patreon - that's it.
Writing Style:
GML is a pretty easy story to understand, the author shows the main characters' internal thoughts and does a fantastic job describing the setting, although they tend to forget basic character details when introducing someone new and so the reader is off wondering what the missing hair or eye color is and any main features separating one person from another slightly similar one.
Grammar:
I didn't note any significant spelling errors.
Story:
MC died in a library fire saving a kid from his reading class he was in charge of - and had no reaction to dying, transmigrating, leaving his students who might have been injured, and being stuck in a library with people trying to murder him outside it. This library is an endless tower that goes up, however, by chapter 106, MC still has not left the first floor. There is not much progress in tower climbing and it bothered me more than I wanted to admit. The worst part was all the deviations - there was a whole necromancer side plot that happened that wasn't even his business! There are too many distractions and eventually, the library and cultivation get sidelined - to top it off, the novel will likely forever remain unfinished.
Character Score:
He's not super intelligent and very childish - upon coming to the realization that he's essentially locked in a magical library of ultimate knowledge which people are trying to loot, steal, destroy, or sell the books inside. He announces, IN CHAPTER 9, that he wants to make the library public. It's a cultivator novel, these people are very obviously not going to sit down, read a book, or borrow and return archaic tomes of knowledge and I legitimately don't understand where he gets his logic from. He blatantly invites people he's just met inside based on his feelings and a pinky promise not to harm him amo - Antyl3214Royal Road★ 0.5I don't understand, why open the library door!? The guy was warned, it's the same as putting two glasses of water on a table and writing 'poison' on one of them, so he almost drinks the glass with poison, it doesn't make sense!!!!
Another problem, the way the protagonist faces his situation is ridiculous, the author seems unable to develop something like that.
