Description

Azarus, a newborn god, is trapped in a game where he must guide his chosen Champion(s) through a series of Trials. Robbed of his rightful power and pestered by exploitive screens, Azarus must discover what he is the god of, manage his Champion’s murderous impulses, and compete against a mysterious pantheon for the title [King of the Gods]. To do so, he is forced to play the game, experimenting with Classes, Skills, and Boons to enhance his Champion’s natural abilities.

What to expect:

Gritty —> No power fantasy here, but not exactly grimdark either.

Roguelite —> The game system is based off of the Roguelite game genre. Characters are tasked with defeating a Tower, consisting of a series of Trials set in different worlds. If they fail at any point, they must return to the beginning and try again. You can expect each new attempt to feature different Classes and worlds, but also to maintain certain themes and character arcs.

Litrpg —> Classes, Skills, Character Selection, Boons, and more! Light on the numbers, heavy on the progression.

I only came across this tale a few days ago and have read up to Chapter 51 at this point, so obviously I am captivated and enjoying the ride.  I like the ferocity,  endurance, determination, pluck, and faith (if not worship) of the Champion.  She is a lot of fun, but far from perfect (Lord, save us from the unflawed.. how could we relate?)  The Champion's God is also a fluid, growing, changing, interesting character and I think it is very clever of the author to have us, the readers, discover the quality and expanse of his character by having him realize the nature of his domain by reflecting upon his Champion's actions and trials. So, like a detective novel, we're trying to figure out the puzzle in tandem with the characters.  A central question, what is his domain? What IS he the God of? I've got theories, but who knows.  Developing, right?

Enter to experience a fresh take on the classic style of video game-fantasy writing blend. Quirky, yet not overtly pandering or derivative. Eloquent without losing its audience, and gripping when necessary. Fans of both video RPGs and literary tales will find elements to enjoy. The story begins with a new perspective on "Character Selection" in a way that will grasp both readers and gamers alike, and continues with a hook to begin you on the journey. SeaGangster's writing will take you along a familiar path but with a unique twist on how to approach what once was typical or expected. Plan for new situations and new experiences to challenge your idea of either medium. As a fan of video games, you'll find familiar themes that naturally escalate your own path and further your journey, but fans of more literary words will appreciate the articulate and well-written approach to the finer details. Mundane moments typically breezed over with the flipping of pages or mashing of buttons have been accentuated and elaborated upon to find yourself reaching into the mind of your main character. Give yourself the viewpoint of a new & unbound god, and take 5 minutes and dive into your next adventure

Let me start by saying I cannot believe there are not more stories like this.  God based systems where the god influences their followers.  At baseline, I love the concept of this story.  The writing is of good quality and there are not many notable typos.  For my taste I’d love more screens and more numbers but that’s subjective and it doesn’t detract from my ability to enjoy the story.  There is a lot still to flesh out since we are only a few chapters in, but there is more than enough already to keep me engaged.

Dive into the captivating world of Gods and champions, a compelling LitRPG that seamlessly blends the best elements of LitRPG and Roguelite games. The characters are not just random players; they are vivid and compelling contributors to the overall richness of the narrative. Azarus, the protagonist, is a well-crafted and proud character who strikes a perfect balance between action and hints at future character development.
As I read into the pages, I found myself completely absorbed in the unique magic system and the many challenges that Azarus and his champion faced. The story unfolds with a perfect blend of excitement and depth, delivering a thrilling and satisfying reading experience.
While the style occasionally drags a bit, I found it to be an overall enjoyable aspect of the book. The premise of the story is strong, offering numerous possibilities for its development, keeping readers intrigued and eager to explore the narrative's potential directions.
Moreover, the grammar is commendable, making the book an easy and engaging read. I appreciate Azarus's refusal to be manipulated and his unwavering trust in his own strength, adding a layer of complexity to his character from the very beginning.
In conclusion, [Gods and Champions] is a captivating masterpiece, skillfully combining LitRPG and Roguelite elements. Fans of the genre will undoubtedly find this book to be a must-read, offering a thrilling adventure and a well-crafted world to explore.

When I stumbled upon this story and saw it was about a god I was excited to see what kind of path this new deity would take since there appeared to be a system. The fact that this deity did not just dismiss the champion candidates without feeling pity for them and his vow to change the fates of mortals pleasantly surprised me. His determination to make his own choices and to not let himself be defined or interpreted by a system are awesome as well.
However I foresee a long journey ahead for this god and his champion, change does not happen suddenly after all and I am curious to see more.
May the gods of writing guide thine Quill.

A lot of stories exist to share an idea, concept or world. This exists to tell a story and I like that the whimsical whims of a god clashing with a system constraining his ability to help. It’s interesting, making in the style of a rogue like is equally interesting, since this isn’t a story of repetition there’s no time loop this genuine effort for growth and change between each trial with the efforts of his champion enacting genuine change and maybe hope.

Gods and Champions is exactly what it promises. It is gritty, it's a roguelite, and it's a litrpg story. It's also well done. The characters are compelling, unique, and personable. Moka is a wonderfully complex character. Azarus is complicated, but truthfully I find him to be a tad more frustrating due to his circumstances and how they seem to hamper Azarus's view of himself.
My two biggest critiques for this are:
Moka's perspective is more interesting and we get saddly little of it now.
The early Roguelite elements feel rushed and I worry that "advancement" will suffer later because of it.
Overall, I love this story so far and can't wait to see where it goes!

    The work is truly mid.
I give the author credit where it is due. Where many authors use litrpg to show a modicum of progression through numbers, at the very least this author has it where the system is the potential enemy with a more darker neferious plot.
Where the story truly falls on its face however is the bleeding heart dying cringe lord of an mc who cries wheels and pines for every fucking human soul he runs into. He is one of those painful iMnOtLiKeoTheRmeN,iREAdNitcHE duckers.
