For reference- I've read up to Book 6 of this series that I've had the opportunity to check out elsewhere, so I do mean it when I say that I believe this is the beginning of a great series. But as for book 1:
Style: Tracers is written in first-person past tense, with a focus on the protagonist Kyle and other main characters- but with occasional POV swaps to other non-MC characters as well. I've heard that POV swapping in first-person novels can be a red-flag to readers here, but for me personally I was never left confused/frustrated due to the POV swaps- and I didn't see any other past readers leave comments about the POV swapping being annoying to them either.
The only reason why I docked .5 off of the style category here, is because the author seems to have a standard "voice" that he uses for narration, and that sometimes overlaps between characters and leaves me wishing the narration was a bit more unique for some characters. Other than that, the story's style is smooth- with environments/actions being described properly, and with run-on sentences not being common either.
Story: I would probably call Book 1 of Tracers a bit of a "slow-burn", that serves as a solid introduction into the larger sci-fi Tracers universe. Mainly because it slowly introduces different aspects like the groups of people in the world, the "power-systems" present in the story, and the history of the world as well.
Tying that in with a heavy focus on the characters, as well as a plotline that develops with tension and real stakes, made this formula work nicely for me at least.
Characters: Tied for world-building in my eyes which is why this category is also 5 stars, book 1 of Tracers is *very* character focused. Which is a good thing, as the light-hearted nature of the first chapters of this book really help show their personalities and unique senses of humor- as well as their flaws.
Also, book 1 had a interesting antagonist as well- that opened the door for many interesting plotlines later
