- saharanRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0overall for a fan fiction it is very good story the writing is continous and there are not unexplained or dispurtive twist and turn that are the norm of all the stories today so we can safely say that author has some good experiance and is not afraid to use it.
the style is good and somewhat different from J.K.Rowlings but that is to be expected and it is a nice story line in the pre established world. the story could use some side character who would be devloped along with the main character becuase the expectatons on the harry potter universe is always about good friends
Character is good and especially since he is not overpowered like multiple protangnsts so it is good to know
Grammer is very good and is leagues above my own so that aspect is full starts from me and it is very good for the whole story some times it requires precise grammer to keep the reader engaged so it is pretty good that the rythm does not break due to grammer errors.
Author is doing the good work and it is nice to know that you are going ahead with this story and are consistent with it. That is difficult to maintain and I hope you maintain it in the future. - Chaos JesterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Tez has managed to write a fanfiction that I believe fits seemlessly into the Wizarding World canon.
The story itself is intriguing, with just enough chapter to chapter to keep you entertained without bogging you down in detail. The only negative in my review comes from story, in that the pacing feels slow in some parts, but pure plot and characterization carry this flaw beautifully.
The style is a perfect fit for the rest of the Wizarding World canon without going into gross stereotypes like the original fiction. So absolutely an improvement overall.
Grammar is good. Always feels reviewing grammar in these.
New original characters are well rounded and relateable, while cameo characters are brought in long enough for fans to appreciate it without staying too long and risking an out of character feeling.
Overall, I love this story thus far. I'm not big in fanfiction, but this did it for me. I was in that sweet spot for Harry Potter growing up, and this takes me back to the feeling I had reading those books. If you love or like the Harry Potter books or anything else in the Wizarding World canon, then this is absolutely for you.
And if you've never consumed any Wizarding World media before, then this just makes for one heck of a story. - ChipcarverRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall:
This is the most well written HP fanfiction I have read yet. It contains a mix of adventure/discovery of the wizarding world with some occasional action scenes.
Overall, this is a very well written story, and could easily be published if it were not based in JK Rowling's world.
Characters:
The characters are well fleshed out for a short story, and are easy to relate to. Anthony unfortunately seems to be a rollercoaster in terms of relationships without much reasoning behind why. However each of the other family members have a distinct reason behind their actions which comes through in later chapters.
Plot/Style:
The plot is excellent, and the author fit in forshadowing of each major event well.
The tension between Gideon's experiences and the actual fires breaking out throughout Hogwarts slowly builds until the final climax of realization behind the runic ritual. This is excellently done, and holds the readers attention throughout.
Talia's pyrokenesis while not initially obvious is well forshadowed by her reactions to various things Gideon goes through.
However when we get to Ruby, unfortunately we don't get much of a view into her reasoning/process. The divination she performs appears to be an echo of the Basilisk episode that Hermione went through in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets. It is less interesting to read in that we don't understand why she is getting visions of some things and not others, nor why she is so invested in improving her divination. (Although it is hinted that the last is to assist Gideon.)
Thanks for an excellent read! - Drew RoystonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Gideon Drake and the fire within is a straight up piece of excellent fan fiction.
It is the story of a boy in a magical world to whom something awful happen when he is baby. The consequences leave him physically marked and he is brought up by a family that is not his own. After a couple of chapters of background, we then fast forward to when the boy is eleven and on the cusp of getting his letter from Hogwarts.
Sounds familiar doesn’t it? Well it is familiar and at the same time entirely new. The story picks up on a lot of things that we know and love from Harry Potter universe but then extends and enhances them.
To be clear though, if you don’t know the Harry Potter world you will struggle a bit. The writer, understandably, assumes at least a basic level of background knowledge. But, you’ll have that even if you’ve just watched a couple of the films.
Despite the similarities that I listed above, this story goes in a whole new direction that is exciting and fresh. You want to know where it goes.
As I said in the title, if you like Harry Potter (and, frankly, even if you don’t) you’ll like this.
Detailed scores
Style: A real strength. This captures JKR’s mood and style impeccably. I’m not a good enough writer to be able to identify how they do it, but it FEELS right. On the technical side: good use of vocab varied sentence lengths. The writer knows what they are doing.
Story: Really good. So much to like. I just took a notch off as some of the decisions and actions pushed the boundaries of believability just a bit too much.
Grammar: Nothing jumped out. Far superior to most reads on this site. Good job.
Character: Really well drawn. Sometime the decisions don’t quite sit right, but this is same point I raised under ‘Story’ so I’m not going to do it here as well as the characters are a real strength of this story. - anna_bRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Very enjoyable story. I liked the characters, the plot, and especially all the little demonstrations of magic in everyday life.
The style and the way the plot developed seemed very close to the original books, except the MC here acts much more realistically, especially when it comes to asking for help.
I felt that some character interactions at the end could have been fleshed out more, but this is a minor issue and the author apparently plans to expand on it in book 2. Speaking of characters, they are all well fleshed out with distinct voices and characteristics.
I didn't notice any grammar mistakes. Overall this is a very well written story and I'm looking forward to the next book. - grovekeeperRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story is very good, with great grammar and some actual english for a change. The fictional universe is the same and the author hasn't desecrated it. As everyone has said the positives, let me point out some negatives which stuck out to me.
1. The MC doesn't act his age. His conduct, thought and everything else feels like that of an adult rather than a child. I dont think smal children analyse that much. Actualy his elder brother in tje first few chapters acts more like his age.
2. The heroine is 2D. She seemed like a character written for being MC's love interest and nothing else. The shy nature isn't expressed well. And its too much support without adequate cause. They havent had much time to interact, so it felt artificial.
3. The attitude of his housemates and classmates are too volatile. There is no consistency. With one news it changes like crazy. In HP it was a believable and gradual change. Also he hasnt developed any friendships with them, you would think there would be more.
4. The pacing is too fast, it takes the beauty out of the universe. This might just be my opinion since I prefer slow burners more.
5. The MC didn't even thank Ollivander? Seems really weird.
The style is remeniscent of the original HP series so thats great. The story is excellent though a bit unbelievable at the end. The language is authentic and the chacracters O already mentioned. - mateustaioRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Relly liked the this fanfic, althoug sometimes i was a bit frustrated about the mc having so much problems but it means that the novel was good enough to make me care about the mc and the other charcaters. Good job and hope you keep writing, looking foward to book 2.
- neiluRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0An excellent story that does a great job of capturing the best of the original works, expand coherently in the world (to be fair, Harry Potter kinda allows anything because 'duh it's magic', but the things offered in this story really match with the spirit of the originals)
The grammar is close enough to perfect, the style is engaging, there are slight hints leading to most reveals that are really good at catching our attention while keeping us wondering where it's going.
Overall, a story that is better than most and that I would recommend with no hesitation to pretty much anyone.
I have removed half a star on caracters and story because some decision-making is a bit of a stretch and the story takes a bit more time in setup as it should.
Not going to the adults at the end of the story in spite of several having been shown as very reliable and understanding (Voronov in particular) is really poor decision making of the heroes compared to prior decisions and reasoning.
There's also the slight incompetence of the staff being beaten to the finish by third years. And some drama / behavior that seemed a touch offkey to me (who the hell bullies a guy that is supposedly capable of burning you to a crisp if he's mad?) but nothing major. - HWPerfidyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Story: This is a story set in the world of Harry Potter, where a boy named Gideon Drake has to deal with the various setbacks his condition has thrown at him. There’s been hints about something darker going on in the background, but I haven’t read far enough to know what exactly that is.
Style: There are a good amount of descriptions that really help the reader immerse themselves in the world. Occasionally there's be a sentence that's worded clumsily, or expressed in a roundabout way, but otherwise the style is fine. It’s been a really long time since I’ve read any of the Harry Potter books, but the execution here is good enough that the reader can still follow along easily even without having read the original work.
Characters: I don’t really have much to say about the characters, since they don’t exactly peak my interest. The grandma’s (was it Annabelle?) personality stands out among the rest, but everyone else feels a bit similar. Maybe it’s because I haven’t got far enough for their personalities to have an impact on me. Grimsby’s perspective was interesting to read, but then we got to Gideon’s perspective and I found my interest waning. He gives me the same distasteful vibe that Harry gave me, and while this is probably a good thing for fans of the books, it’s a turn off for me.
Grammar: No mistakes that I could see.
Overall: Really good writing and solid execution, especially for a fanfic. If you liked the Harry Potter books, this is a good story that gives you a similar experience. - JEPayneRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Bottom line up front: this is a professional quality fanfic that could (and should) be a published part of the HP canon in my opninion. The review title sums up my emotions reading the first 7 chapters of this book. 'Righteous fury' might be the specific sub-set. The author has done an excellent job of crafting this story to make the reader feel such strong emotions, but be warned! It is not a relaxing read. At times it made me want to punch a wall in lieu of fictional characters.
Style - reminded me strongly of early HP books, if filtered through a more adult lense. The prose was persistent and unobtrusive, subtly flavouring the text in the background as I read.
Story - amazing idea, this subversion of the early HP books by rights shouldn't work, and yet it does. Really, really well! This adult twist on the formula takes what we are familiar with as magical and wonderful, and flips it on its head, a source of shame and resentment. Brilliant stuff!
Grammar - better than anything else I've read or RR so far. Enough said.
Character - absolutely fantastic character work! Every single character feels like a living, breathing person after just a few lines of text, and it's impossible to not become fully emotionally invested in the MC and his plight
