- longwindedone1Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This review comes after reading the first two prologues and the first six chapters of Genetic Ascension. Please forgive the spoilers contained below.
Story:
This story is a cultivation tale that follows Ryuha (a powerful cultivator). He finds renewed purpose when he learns about the Helix System’s threat (they send hordes that consume universes). Also in the story are Shin Lee and her son Rin. Rin just might be the lynchpin to save their universe from destruction. This story is a nice blend of cultivation story and sci-fi.
Style:
This story is told in third-person. It seems to alternate between Ryuha’s journey and that of Shin Lee and Rin. The writing is rich with detail and seems to capture the vastness of the world and the more quiet moments between the characters well. The overall tone is best described as epic (and I don't use that as a millennial). Epic, in this case has to do with the scale of events and characters. There are some powerful characters and some real heavy-duty threats.
Grammar:
I have no issues with this story and grammar and punctuation. But I'm also not a great person to score this category based on how I consume my media and stories. I listen to all of my RR stories on the app.
Characters:
I've mentioned Ryuha and Shin Lee + son (Rin). This characters perform the perfect trifecta of MC action. There is the mentor, the protector, and the hidden potential (much like in my story). I like this style. As well, there is Yanmei (Rin's friend, and Mrs. Gwi (Shin Lee's assistant). Those are all of the characters that I could remember in these first chapters of the story.
My favorite part of this story has to be the arrival of the obelisk. It is kind of what kicks everything off (and frankly is just a cool concept). I'm looking forward to where this story goes from here. Give it a try, you will enjoy. 5/5 - Narrin DawaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Updated Chapter 14
Genetic Ascension opens with a prologue from Ryuha Huang’s perspective, a powerful and seasoned cultivator grappling with the ultimate ceiling of his power. TBH, I wasn't quite sure what Ryuha's role was during the prologue, but the author cleared it up for me in the comments.
It works out to be a detailed, mythic setup, but once we switch to Rin’s story, the real heart of the tale unfolds. Rin is a young protagonist navigating a world of cultivation without his own powers—yet. His struggles, friendships, and determination make this story feel personal, and his journey brings an exciting contrast to the grand countdown-to-doom that loom in the background.
Style: The writing is immersive and bring the Frozen Edge Sect to life. Some scenes are heavy on description, which occasionally slows the pace, but the world feels beautifuly developed. I also really enjoy the how the "System" is pre-framed in the first two chapters (ETC intervention? Sweet concept). Unexpected derivatives lesson was a fun change, too. I’d suggest keeping Rin’s sections tighter on action and dialogue, which balance out the introspection - this has been improved upon as chapters have developed.
Story: The stakes start out big, with the threat of a multiversal invasion which introduces grand stakes and giving us a solid timeline to be concerned about. After the prologue Rin’s story is grounded and heartfelt, with little Mei Mei there to liven it up. Rin’s position is easy root for as he strives to prove himself despite being behind in cultivation (e.g., having none!).
Grammar: Grammar is mostly solid, though occasional comma errors and long sentences could use a tweak for readability. It’s generally easy to follow, with only minor hiccups.
Character: Rin is a lovable and resilient kid, and his interactions with friends, especially Mei Mei, start to develop his characterization.
In all, Genetic Ascension is a solid mix of epic cultivation and personal challenges that keeps you roo - YegdresillRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story does a wonderful job of capturing the essence of traditional cultivation tales but brings in refreshing new perspectives. It delves into existential questions about power and purpose, but what makes it truly stand out is the way it balances these deeper themes with moments of humor and personal connection. This is a journey of self-discovery and challenge.
Characters
Rin is a character that draws the reader in with his relatability and determination. Though initially weak, his heart is set ablaze with an undying flame, which makes his journey both compelling and emotionally engaging. As he navigates a world of powerful cultivators, Rin's struggles feel personal and grounded, with his character development being the true heart of the story. His interactions with others, especially with Mei Mei, bring out his youthful energy and desire to prove himself, while also providing some much-needed lightness to balance the heavier moments.
Ryuha Huang, though introduced in a more mythic, almost grandiose way, plays a pivotal role in the story’s overarching narrative. As a powerful cultivator who is somewhat disillusioned with the limits of his own abilities, Ryuha’s presence brings an intriguing contrast to Rin’s character. Ryuha’s introspective moments add a layer of philosophical depth, as he contemplates the consequences of immortality and power. Their differing perspectives on cultivation and personal growth enrich the plot, with Rin’s journey serving as a counterpoint to Ryuha’s more seasoned but jaded outlook on life.
World-Building
The world is immersive and vividly crafted. The cultivation system is detailed, though not overly complicated, and feels familiar in a good way, while offering enough twists to keep things engaging. The looming threat of the Helix system and the potential multiversal invasion raise the stakes, but it is Rin's personal growth, paired with his quiet struggles, that keeps the reader rooted in the narrative. This balance of grand-scale - 4mp13Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is my first review I am more of a reader then a writer but thought this one has got great potential so here I am.
So I read the very first chapters when they came out originally a couple of months ago I gave it a 5 star then and I am giving it a 5 Star now
I really enjoy this story and can't wait to see where Rin goes the mystery is pretty good some things can be bit better like POV but alot of it has been amended and the last chapter didn't have such big problem with it.
I might be a bit biased as I really enjoy cultivation stories but this one I think is going to be great might be a bit slow right now but I think it's going to ramp up soon.(or well I hope so)
I would recommend this to anyone who likes xianxia and progression fantasy I can't wait for the new chapters to drop so all in all it's a great story
This is my first review, and I consider myself more of a reader than a writer, but I felt compelled to share my thoughts because I believe this story has incredible potential. I initially read the first few chapters when they were released a couple of months ago, and I rated it five stars back then. I'm thrilled to say that I am giving it another five-star rating now!
I genuinely enjoy this story and find myself eagerly anticipating the journey of Rin. The mystery element is engaging, with twists and turns that keep me invested. While I do think there are aspects that could use some improvement—such as the point of view—I have noticed that many of these issues have been addressed in recent updates. In fact, the last chapter didn't have the same significant problems I had encountered earlier, which was a pleasant surprise.
I might be a little biased, as I have a strong affinity for cultivation stories, but I truly believe this one is on the path to greatness. While the pacing may feel a bit slow at the moment, I have high hopes that the story will ramp up soon—at least, I certainly hope so! I wholeheartedly recommend this to anyone who enjoys xianxia and pro - ElectrikBlueRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0To start this review, I'd like to disclaim that I have never read anything based on cultivation or systems. So bear in mind I have no reference point regarding this type of literature.
That said, despite being a genre I don't usually explore, the story was captivating. The prologue is excellent and immediately gives you the stakes while building upon an original world and well-defined characters. Everything flows well, and you can understand a lot of things in a short time.
Then the story slows down a little, but you meet pretty endearing characters, and it's easy to follow along. Though I have decided to review the story at this point since I had a glimpse of enough of it for it, I'll keep reading, and I'm eager to know what might come next.
Style:
This is a point I'm most conflicted about. The author’s writing is very effective; the descriptions tell you everything you need to know without dragging or rushing. You can genuinely feel the potential. Sadly, some changes in perspective (like it has been said in other comments and reviews) and some jarring sentences can sometimes be felt. I firmly believe the style could be its greatest strength with some editing and proofreading.
I want to add that the author seems aware of it and hasn't gotten to it yet, so this problem might be resolved by the time you read. Also, it only happens sometimes, and you will still enjoy reading.
Story:
The story is quite intriguing. I googled many things linked to cultivation fantasy and system-based fiction; at no point did I feel lost, but it is a good indicator that the story captured my curiosity. The suspense is handled well, which is one reason I'll keep reading. As I said, the prologue was very good and gave a solid base for the following chapters.
Keep in mind that it slowed down a bit afterwards, but it didn't bother me.
Grammar:
I guess it’s the same problem as style. Some sentences could benefit from proofreading and some slight tweaks. But with time, this wouldn't be an issue - J. G. SadsquatchRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Genetic Ascension is like stepping into a roller coaster with your best friend cheering you on from the seat next to you. It starts off with a bang—a prologue starring Ryuha Huang, a cultivator so absurdly powerful he’s practically bored by his own capabilities. But don’t worry, that’s just the appetizer. Once we jump into Rin’s journey, everything gets personal, and you can’t help but root for him. He’s young, scrappy, and determined to make a mark in a universe that sometimes forgets it even needs him. What I love most is how the story gives you that grand, countdown-to-doom vibe (multiversal invasion? Yes, please!) and still manages to focus on everyday struggles, like Rin trying to keep up with classmates who can do flashy martial arts when he’s still figuring out the basics.
The world-building here is seriously impressive. From the Frozen Edge Sect’s icy peaks to the ominous Helix system that looms on the horizon, you get a vivid sense of a place teetering on the brink of something huge. And there’s a neat balance between that epic scale—like the meteor shower that changes the whole sky—and the more grounded moments, like Rin chatting with his spunky friend Mei Mei. She adds a spark of fun that makes you grin, even when the stakes are sky-high. This blend of massive cosmic threat and small, heartfelt interactions is what keeps the pages turning. And then there’s Ryuha again, occasionally popping in with his philosophical musings, reminding us what it feels like to reach the top and wonder, “Now what?”
Stylistically, the writing does a fantastic job painting cinematic images without bogging you down. Sure, there are times the descriptions get a bit dense, and a few commas might be out of place, but honestly, it’s all pretty easy to follow. The pacing feels carefully thought out: you’ve got introspective moments where you can catch your breath, balanced by thrilling spikes of action and big reveals. The author also sprinkles in a solid dose of humor—like a deriva - Kuma33Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0The premise isn't too unique but I enjoy how the author has written so far. I look forward to seeing how his powers progress. The author has a good thing going on here. The pacing isn't too fast or too slow. The grammar is perfect throughout, bar small typos that most wouldn't notice.
The side characters display a lot of the common xianxia tropes, but they don't come off too heavy. The way they react to scenarios is reasonable, and there are not just immediate reactions to perceived attacks on egos. This novel manages to keep the elements of the genre that keep it distinct while also adding that fusion twist that many Western authors try to do. Every other one I've seen has either failed to keep that distinctness from other genres or is just a complete mess. This one manages it.
The main character is written very well, he has both a history and demeanor that fit the aim and overall pace of the story itself. What truly shines is the plot that keeps you hooked, leaving you eager for more.
Style: Very good feel to it. You certainly feel the different perspectives of the characters. The word choice is carefully selected to ensure the scenes are clear, and to convey the feelings of the characters.
Great work. - Apollo149Royal Road★★★★★ 4.5A Promising Premise
Genetic Ascension presents an intriguing premise: a cultivation-based protagonist thrust into a futuristic, technologically advanced world. The concept of combining traditional cultivation techniques with genetic engineering offers a unique blend of old and new. The slow-burn approach to the narrative, while potentially frustrating for some readers, can be effective in building a solid foundation for the story.
A Few Considerations
Character Development: A key aspect of any story is the development of its characters. The MC's journey from a relatively weak individual to a powerful force will be crucial. It's important to ensure that this progression is believable and engaging.
World-Building: The world-building is essential to creating a rich and immersive experience. The convergence of cultivation and technology should be explored in depth, with detailed explanations of the underlying mechanics.
Pacing: While a slow-burn approach can be effective, it's important to maintain a balance. Too much slow pacing can lead to reader fatigue. Strategic pacing is key to keeping the reader engaged.
Unique Elements: To stand out in a crowded genre, it's important to introduce unique elements. This could be through the MC's unique abilities, the world's intricate history, or the nature of the multiversal system.
Potential Strengths
Strong Character Arc: A well-developed character arc can captivate readers and make them emotionally invested in the story.
Innovative World-Building: A unique and well-crafted world can set the story apart from others in the genre.
Engaging Plot: A compelling plot with twists and turns can keep readers hooked.
Satisfying Power Fantasy: A satisfying power fantasy can be a major draw for readers.
Overall, Genetic Ascension has the potential to be a captivating story. By focusing on character development, world-building, pacing, and unique elements, the author can create a truly memorable reading experience.
I'm excited to see how th - ThrillianRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is a fun mix that's unique (at least for me).
The story follows a young man learning qi, only to be frozen and thrust into a futuristic world, where he finds the martial prowess he's been studying for years has been rendered obsolete against an all-out struggle against a hungry system.
The story is very much in its beginning phases, as we're introduced to the main character. I particularly liked the arrival of the system in the prologue, which seemed to me to be an original element amid the traditional setting.
The characters and humor of the story all stands out, with every character particularly well-written. That is particularly crucial given the slow burn nature of the story. However, even though the story hasn't quite hit the story beats listed in the synopsis, it's clear that both the writing and the larger narrative are definitely hitting their strides.
There are a few moments where the dialogue feels a bit like "maid and butler", often times giving away a little too much exposition where showing would be more preferable for telling. Still, the action and pacing is well done and everything lands pretty well in the first few chapters.
I'm very eager to see where this story goes, especially when the main character emerges from cyro to hit their new surroundings. But so far, I'm just enjoying the ride! - The CollinsRoyal Road★ 0.5The book description is drastically incorrect and misleading. The book summary reads that, there is something happening to a world so a mother builds a cryo chamber for her son, he wakes up 1k year later in a new world and has to switch from traditional methods to the new futuristic methods to gain power.
Reading this you would think OK so maybe pro-log will sum up the backround and then you will join this person as he figures out that new future. Nope it doesn't do that. So then you think OK maybe this will happen a few chapters in so that there is some world building context. Nope. Chapter 20 and there is no cryo capsule. There isn't even the idea to build one! Thus there is no exploring this new future. There is literally NOTHING happening that was stated in the description for this book. It is 20 chapters (20 chapters is a very long time) of NOT what the book description is. Worse, At the time of this review there are only 24 chapters.
So if you want to read a story about someone who was forced to sleep for 1k years and then adapt to a new world, this isn't it.
