I'm writing this at only chapter 16, so I won't bother trying to talk about character development or consistency or story evolution.
The worldbuilding seems pretty good, but we haven't seen nearly enough of it yet. We know there are some non-human races, and apparently some magic, but the focus of the story appears to be on a non-magical MC and his similarly non-magical party.
I was really mad when I hit the end of the posted chapters. It is right at the end of the first battle and there is a good rhythm set up, so running out of words is infuriating. It made me so mad I had to write this review!
Since this is RR, I'll point out the following:
* This is a "gritty" fantasy, and may turn into "dark fantasy." So far, it bears a lot of similarities to the "Black Company" deadtree novels. There is the notion of mercenaries with a code of professional behavior but not honor, per se, and the idea that an individual's past doesn't matter, just the current contract.
* This is not gamelit/litrpg/progression/xianxia, so ... there goes 90% of RR readers :-|.
I'm optimistic about this story. I hope there are 100 more chapters just as good as these first few.
