STYLE
The style is a mix of script-writing, short quick sentences, and heavy dialogue. It's a very unique approach to writing, especially for a Writeathon entry. It's interesting and fast paced, but because of it being very dialogue heavy with shorter 'action' sentences, it feels like some details are left out a bit. (if you are on mobile, there's a chance that some of the lines might break)
GRAMMAR
Nothing to complain about here!
STORY
The story is primarily a comedic one in tone, so don't expect any hyper-dramatic or serious moments. Certainly there's some pathos occasionally but this is mostly just a fun adventure comedy! The story itself is separated into arcs, about 3-4 chapters long each, but they go by pretty fast due to the style. I feel the story does suffer a bit from this, but otherwise it still keeps itself going as a sunny little and VERY meta comedy. This is also a rather referential and half of a fourth wall kind of tale as well.
CHARACTER
It's a boy and his pickle, honestly I'm not sure what else to tell you. They are the foremost characters while the others basically serve their purposes per arc. There is nothing wrong with this, because Iggy is of course quite delightful and clever and the choice of a pickle as a companion is ALSO pretty darn interesting.
If you like comedies, especially meta-comedy, and experiments with styling and formats, this would be for you! - LacunyktRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5[This review was spurred by a forum post.]
To be honest, I'm not entirely sure what I just read. But I liked it. It's cute, it's bizarre, it's irreverent, and above all, certainly unique. The characters are written pretty well; they're interesting and all have good personalities that aren't too similar to one another's. The comedic tones are also pleasant.
In general, things move pretty quickly. Most of it is written in lines rather than paragraphs. Not a bad choice, but a bold one. So because of this pacing, there isn't a lot of detail or development. The occasional plot point feels a little vague. But the story itself isn't very complicated, so it's far from egregious. The spelling and grammar are overall good; it's the structure that suffers the most. I understand that fast pacing, frequent line breaks, and minimal paragraphs are a stylistic choice. No problem! But the one thing that stuck out to me the most was when new pieces of speech started on a new line, despite being the same speaker and having very little non-dialogue in between. Perhaps this is intentional, but it's unconventional, so I kept thinking a new character was speaking. Besides that, everything was pretty solid.
Follow Me! puts the pedal to the metal and hauls you along on crazy adventures!
