- yongomongoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0By now I have read a few hands full of stories on this site, and compared to the norm set by other works and ratings, Fodder should by all means have a full marks rating in every aspect.
There aren't any flaws that I would want to change, and I'm excited to see where the story leads.
The author is not only a talented wordsmith, but also not afraid to take paths that could ruin the attachment and immersion for some readers, and I fucking love the audicity.
It's a refreshing change from other more generic approaches in other stories.
Kudos.
And thank you very much! - LegitBurrito112Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0It’s amazingly done. Immoral main character but not hard to root for, especially with the incredible cast of characters around him. Each one you connect to, sometimes to your detriment, but it just makes the story feel more real. It has an honestly unreasonable amount of content, yet has stayed consistent with power scaling, slowly threading multiple plot lines to be tied together one by one, and so much more, read it. Just click on First chapter, read 5, and i would say just keep going it gets better (cause it does) but hopefully it speaks for itself :)
- LoDRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Truly a hidden gem deserving far more attention than it currently has. The story is really well written despite the pacing occasionally being slow.
It's the story of a crime boss reincarnated as a goblin. However unlike most monster stories, he has no way to evolve or gain more personal strength. This is makes it very different from other isekai stories as his only path to power is through "kingdom building". In other words building a kingdom isn't a side project or an accidental byproduct of "trying to live a quiet life", but his only means of survival.
This leads to very interesting stakes and unique storylines that are really refreshing to the genre.
My only criticism is that the pacing is sometimes too slow, which can be frustrating. - Mad MardiganRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I loved this story and devoured most of it in a day! Can’t wait for more : ) : ). Reminded me of a series I read a long time ago. Sometimes reading about “the good guys” just gets old. This totally mixed it up for me! I’d pay for this series easy.
- NewbageRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A novel, thoughtful, and compelling take on a traditionally trashy and much maligned subgenre: a modern man reborn as a goblin in another world.
The MC's thoughts, actions, and personality are masterfully crafted in way that makes it clear the author is both highly intelligent and well versed in psychology and moral philosophy. The MC has been described as villainous by many reviewers, and in some ways he is. But he's not your traditional scumbag.
He is not vengeful, he does not enjoy cruelty, he takes no pleasure in the suffering of others (in fact he often displays sympathy when faced with such suffering, despite his best efforts to the contrary). Nor does he pleasure in dominating others. He is not petty, and fact his capacity for forgiveness, and not taking wrongs done against him personally is, without exaggeration, saint-tier.
He is amoral, not immoral. Essentially, one might describe him as an interesting interpretation of the machiavellian ideal.
The author pokes fun at the isekai genre without undermining the readers interest or the novel's serious tone. People who are well versed in the genre will find a number of amusing nods and references. Despite the grave theme and subject matter persistent throughout, there is sufficient comic relief that the story never stopped being refreshing. I read from start until the most recent chapter (Cut Down; 29 chapters; 466 pages) pretty much in one sitting, and couldn't put the story down the entire time.
The side characters are all quite compelling as well. Both humans and non human characters were believable and 3 dimensional. A key mark of the authors skill at crafting compelling characters lies in the fact that he was able to make me sympathize with the MCs goblin nest mates -- to the point that I felt sad whenever one was killed. I'd liken the impact of their deaths to those of likeable characters in game of thrones. Side characters are also almost as prone to dying as game of thrones characters, so prepare yourse - StarlightAnonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've read up ahead on fictionpress, and I must say that this is an excellent story. Well done.
- Void UzumakiRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0An absolutely great novel, if you don't mind an amoral MC of course, because that is what he is.
This Novel is one of the best I read so far, it has everything, problems and setbacks for the MC, an actually intelligent MC that manages to get past these problems not by luck but by actual planning.
He also thinks about his decisions and prevents many problems from even being created by actually thinking things through. Don't get me wrong, he does make mistakes, but they are forgivable ones, and he learns from them.
He manages to build a city while starting out as a goblin, and I'm talking about stupid, woman raping, jumping around naked goblins, the kind you would expect in an RPG or in goblin slayer. And that without the Author giving him any kind of cheat, instead he gets stones thrown in his way again and again and manages to still go on and get closer and closer to whatever goal he has.
While many Novels where the MC is reborn as a monster try to impose some kind of human superiority upon those monsters in this one that doesn't happen, oh, the goblins become more civilized, but in their own way, they are still goblins, just more intelligent ones. And that developement isn't done from one day to the next, but takes time, not as much as it would for humans, but that is explained reasonably and is the result of a disadvantage, rather than an advantage.
In the spoiler I will explain that disadvantage:
Goblins are born at their full potential and basically cna't grow further after that, it might as well be impossible(so far there is no known way to grow ones potential that isn't detrimental in a major way(and the detrimental effect is even stronger if you have less potential)).
But the advantage of that ability is that they grow way faster and reach there maximum potential within a few days, while also picking up language and survival skills very easily.
There is also one part relatively early on where MC seems to become nice and many comment that we were promised an M - WayneRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0An intriguing tale so far, the fight between goblin instincts & the wider world is very novel.
- The true NarratorRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0(Made as of chapter 48 deep cuts).
Considering that every other reviewer here (currently, at the time of writing), for the most part, is gushing praise about this piece of literature, I am expecting this review to really bomb out.
I found this story to be an incredibly fun and interesting story at first, better isekai start than most, being more original in the way through which reincarnation occurs.
In the earlier chapters of the book, the author jumps between the past and the present of the protag in a smooth, informative, and interesting look into the protags reasons and motives for his... unique personality.
At first, this was a welcome insight into 'Scratch' (the protag) but later becomes kinda annoying and intrusive, As explaining away why Scratch is such an asshole at that point is rather unnecessary, more than enough information already being given on the pessimistic goblin.
(Even if his past experiences molded him into a manipulative jerk or sociopath, I don't always want to hear about why he became such an ass after the third or fourth time).
Also, another issue I find with this novel is the massive multitude of branching POV's, some of the varying perspectives are a welcome change or refreshing insight, but many of them are actually, rather redundant and abrupt as we jump from POV to POV like a juggled hot potato.
For one, at many points we see things through some random characters eyes only for them to die at the next instant or to live a long time then die a meaningless death after we finally attach some worth to them in our empty hearts.
This is done so many times that it becomes exhausting, making readers not want to connect with characters as none tend to live that long and most are just humanization articles in disguise waiting to be burned after finally being read through.
The author certainly is not afraid to kill off characters and while others may disagree, I think the author is too trigger happy with the deaths, while it certainly makes the wo - Cal04Royal Road★★★ 3.0As of chapter 12
Needs a Multiple Lead Character tag. I feel tricked and betrayed.
Cons: in my opinion
At a certain point, single chapters are following 4 or more character. The "lead" "heros" "bandits" "orcs" "some thief guild women" "another goblin" "another bandit" all in one chapter. And the leads sitting in a hole/ cave. How is this following one main lead? Needs a tag.
No actual plot in sight (there is a slice of life tag) but besides maybe watching someone die. Playing cave man. A sentence or two that says the mc wants to get stronger. Goblin chatter. Other people's povs.
Grammer worsens the further you read, not necessarily spelling in most cases, but funky sentences and unclear actions. (As of chapter twelve)
Characters seem to be there to help the reader follow the world thats going on around them. Its a personal taste of mine to follow a lead character, which this story is clearly deviating from.
Pros: if you like this stuff
Multiples povs
Realistic world, doesn't shy from death
Mc who (i speculate) will become op through satire
Goblins
Suggestions:
I cannot suggest much because I'm 40 chapters behind the last chapter. Besides add a tag and ask if someone is willing to edit your piece from the start.
Also this isn't a bad story if you like multiple characters/ multuple povs. 2 1/2 because it doesn't have the tags. You could say they're not lead characters, but they're more of a lead than the actual lead (if they don't die) at this point. All we learn about the world is through the "side characters" or info dumps at the end of the chapter.
