Description
The Galactic Fringe is a deadly place. But as a fugitive from justice, Gaylen’s options are limited. Now a dangerous gamble has earned him his own ship and a small crew. It’s enough to survive, to stay mobile, from one trouble spot to another.
Savage pirates, starport gangs and bounty hunters are dangerous enough, and now a brewing war threatens a new brand of chaos.
Good thing he knows how to kick ass.
Flights of the Addax is an action-packed sci-fi adventure saga. If you like Firefly, Han Solo, scrappy survivors on the edge of space, and lots of shooting and punching, you’ll love this one.

- JosephWRRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The characters have depth to them, and while the plot is definitely fantastical it never fully jumps the shark.
The second half of book three did drag a bit for me, but I'm still looking forward to book four.
One thing I would like covered a bit more is the relative strengths of the various factions, i.e. in the big battle of book 2 is that all of the federation ships, or in the grand scheme of things is this just a minor regional conflict? - MinlettRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The world is well built, the characters fully fleshed out, and it is fun to read. Our main character has this survivor with a terrible luck who just rolls with the punches kind of feeling and the way he deals with situations comes off as realistic and fun to read. He has a head on his shoulders and he uses it. Same with the other members of the crew, and I love the humanoid sub-types. All in all, I enjoyed this. This story is episodic in nature, with each book being a separate adventure that took place on the Addax.
- Mister BillRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So, this is a really good sci-fi story, even more so for RR. The worldbuilding is great, the action is great, the POVs are done super well, it's very well written, and I've found it quite engaging so far (and I'm easily bored). I really like the space stuff and I've found the whole story gripping.
No big problems. The grammar is great (a tiny horror here and there but not at all distracting), the writing is great, and it somehow continues to get deeper as time goes on.
Very much worth a read! - TheScribeRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is why sci-fi is great. A varied crew, an apparently simple mission. A casual attitude to the law. A recipe for fun disaster!
The action is on point, very visceral and simple in the best way. The world building is immersive and interesting, with traditional sci-fi elements, but feels fresh, and the jargon is easy to follow whilst revealing more of the world and its mechanics. A cool undercurrent of the crime world, too. Each POV feels unique and conveys a real sense of personality, and the dialogue is sharp and snappy, which is important, because it’s how much of the action unfolds. Really enjoying the different characters in this ragtag crew, as well.
Gaylen is (at least initially) a traditional sci-fi scoundrel, but it doesn’t feel derivative, and the rest of the crew provide plenty of interesting contrast around him.
It’s a slower burn, but that’s perfect for me, and I prefer a more patient approach that builds towards a proper conclusion.
Grammar-wise, there’s the occasional error, but pretty rare and definitely not glaring. The style has a fluency that makes up for these.
Really enjoying it so far, looking forward to seeing where the story, and characters, go. Keep up the good work! - jmc5003Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I had been stumbling from story to story trying to find a new author whose works I would really enjoy. I found him!
This series is fun, action packed and very well written. Characters are well developed and the author writes well enough that I have a full mental visual of his universe. Although there's lots of action, the story overall is very positive and upbeat. There's enough in the real world to stress about right now - it was wonderful to escape into this author's universe and feel some positivity. - PaleProfessorRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0As promised in the blurb at the bottom, it very much falls in line with the Firefly/Han Solo feel.
Some more words here because the review system requires a minimum of 50 words because apparently 20 words can't make a good review. Obviously reviews should lengthy and possibly have spoilers. - SiliconWolfRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0A crew of six assemble to make a courier run. Captain, Engineer, Medic, Berserker, Thief, Courtesan. An odd mix of talents, but when the job is to carry a data-stick between stars, you don't need the last three people to actually do anything, right. I mean, what could go wrong?
Just about everything, actually.
THE GOOD:
Excellent grammar
Solid worldbuilding
Solid plot
Solid characters
THE BAD?
There isn't anything bad.
TL;DR:
You should read this. It's very good! - ThatWriterGuyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is technically a review swap, but my opinions on this are honest. I only read the first six chapters so far, but this has to be one of the best stories on Royal Road! The characters are interesting and cool. Gaylen is essentially Han Solo, but cooler. He got a crew together to fly some "perfectly legitimate" cargo to the Nearest Fringe as his first mission. Already, his first adventure looks like a blast!
The only sad thing is that Royal Road is not very friendly to stories like this. It's not a LitRPG or Isekai, so that's a large chunk of people who won't read this novel. Not that I'm complaining. There's enough of those on here that this novel provides a breath of fresh air.
Flights of the Addax is a great example of why Science Fiction is a popular genre and why it's so special. If anyone is a sci-fi fan, read this book. You won't regret it. - Orion DuskRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This space opera has almost everything associated with the genre - traveling to unique worlds at a frenzied pace, traps and ambushes, multitudes of bad guys and monsters, space battles, and mysterious powers.
Gaylin Qin is a man with a shady past who goes on a wonderful development while procuring a ship and crew. He first does a job he is forced to do, then jobs of necessity, and finally does something he wants to do at the end. And unsavory types try to thwart him all along the way. He's tough and composed, but he has to use a fair amount of wit too in order to survive.
His crew is quirky and joins up with him for money (and other reasons which are unique to each character). They each possess their unique talents and help Gaylen clean up some of the galaxy's riffraff. Living on the spacer lanes doesn't often afford a peaceful break. But they often like it that way!
The pacing is good. The setting moves to new locations frequently (there's a whole galaxy to earn a living in after all). The setting is wide and varied, showcasing all of what you expect to see in space stations, strange worlds, rundown slums, etc. New bad guys pop up regularly. There isn't a persistent, fully fleshed out big bad in the same vein as Darth Vader here, but that doesn't hurt the story any. And there aren't any grammatical errors which gets in the way of enjoyment. I'd give it 4.75 stars if I could. - orangepeelRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5This is a great story so far. Not perfect, it is a little on the slower paced side but has enough action and world building so far to easily keep my intrest. It reminds me of the Firefly show in that there is a ragtag ship crew trying to make ends meet, skirting the law on occation, in this case they are just starting out and still getting to know each other.
