- bingbongbingbongbingbongRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I thought it'd be worth to start this review off by saying - I've never read a litRPG before and I didn't think it would be something I would enjoy. This story has proven me wrong! I think it's a great introduction to the genre.
In terms of the style, this is something I particularly enjoy about this story. I love the author's voice and his use of language. The story is action packed but also deep and thought provoking. The author is descriptive and creates great imagery without slowing the story down or boring the reader. I found the style overall to be very engaging. There are many snippets of prose that I love throughout the story so far that have made me pause reading just to appreciate.
Regarding the characters - the story follows an interesting and complex female lead and manages to switch between the POV of other unique characters as the story progresses. I love the small breaks throughout the work where we get to see events from a different perspective. Each character has their own unique voice and back story that's slowly revealed throughout the adventure. I'm excited to learn more about each character's history.
The grammar - No complaints here. For something the author writes and uploads everyday, there are surprisingly very little errors/typos throughout the work so far.
The story - The author is always subverting your expectations and keeping you on your toes. I'm a big horror fan, and there are a lot of elements in this that remind me of Junji Ito's work as well as Evil Dead. The plot is always developing into something bigger than I originally expect, I'm excited to keep reading to see where it ends up!
Definitely recommend giving this a read! - BugyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0The story starts off with an introduction to Zoe's life. I like how the author immediatly puts us in the middle of her situation. It's nice to see a glimpse of the MCs life before the system is integrated, also helps understand Zoe's personality.
The story seems to take a look at many other subjects. I found the discussion of God and the impact that had, very interesting. The author discusses many bigger themes within the story.
I found it difficult to follow a lot of what was going on before the system was introduced. There were a ton of characters that were introduced that don't even seem to be a big piece of the story.
I really liked the addition of Zoe's dreams. I think they were a cool twist at the beginning of the dungeon.
I wish that a lot of the setting was better explained. When they land it seems to be a very rushed description of the surroundings, and enviornment. I feel like I would want to hear about the new world they were all thrust into, as well as this dungeon.
The fights are well thought out, and I like the progression of the story so far.
Overall, I really like the story, and it seems very well thought out. I definitely am excited for the next chapter. Definitely dropping a follow! - BumpRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This novel has been very entertaining to read. There is a very good hook at the beginning, and it hardly slows down thoughout. You can really feel Zoe's struggle to survive, and it seems that no character is safe from the grasping claws of death. Even as the characters grow stronger, new and even more daunting challenges arise. Overall, quite good and I am excited to see what happens next.
- CaptnDonutzRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This one has been really good so far, but I will be updating this review in the future. Someone did this webnovel a massive disservice by giving a 2 star, dropping this one to an overall 4 star despite every other review being overwhelmingly positive. I will say that I am not a huge fan of the changing POVs because I am still pretty confused on a lot of fronts and the POVs changes leave me with more questions than answers, but I suppose that is the point. Overall, this book does a great job of feeling fresh despite it sharing many similarities to other novels on the surface.
- Dads Bedtime StoriesRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0So I have been falling in love with LitRPGs and am glad to have found this one.
I like the way the story starts and how they end up in the "new world". Some stories do a bad job but the transition here was well thought out and I like the anticipation and difficult decision that takes place to arrive. Suspense build up was great.
skill choices are aways fun when the choice to pick is not easy based on a name. The mystery it creates is almost as enjoyable as watching the MC try and figure out gow the skill works or what it does.
good use of supporting characters and individuals. A bonus perk is the rare female Mc. Backstory ans motivation it causes is also good and enjoyable. Just enough to add tension and create a reason for why certain actions are taken.
monsters (zombies) are a cool aspect too. I like the use of them and the variety of power and skills they have. The fight sequences and choices needed based on their skills and the skills of others are well done. I often wonder what it would be like to be "transported" and suddenly thrown into combat with no clue on how things would go down. The author did a great job conveying how I feel it would really happen
overall im excited to keep reading and seeing how the story develops.
few extra things:
great use of grammer. No major issues I have noticed which is always a perk
use of text / skills / interface descriptions. Some books fail to make the story and interface flow together well. Again well done and easy to follow the back and forth between them. - Mourning_DoveRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Insanely good prose-- among the best of the site, top tier, DO NOT SKIP THIS ONE. It's like if someone took our favorite little shitty litrpg genre and made a proper story out of it. please please do yourself a favor and read, this is a true gem of the site
- NetworkingRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Well, so far so good. Seems like your standar System Apocalypse for the moment but I can see very interesting concepts taking hold of the narrative, which is one of the most solid aspects in my opinion ( I like your writing style 👍) and the worldbuilding is very close so far (we have yet to see it develop truly, though)
Anyways, best of luck, mate. I recomend it for sure! - Ton_TonnRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've been reading this story for a while now and there have been some times I've thought about letting it go. Namely when the suffering of the characters got a little too intense, but I'm incredibly happy I've stuck with it. While the suffering is immense, it only works to boister the satisfaction of something finally going right. This story has some of the most fleshy, real, and interesting characters I've read in some time, and it is always entertaining to see them fight their way through whatever obstacles are stacked (and I mean STACKED) in their way. In terms of plot, holey, it doesn't get a lot darker. Some of the scenes have genuinely made me feel sick but that just goes to show that the author does not mess around. The prose are clean and understandable, the grammer is very good for the most part, and the dialogue actually sounds like something a real person would say. I wish this story had a higher rating, however I can understand if some people were put of by the content. It is pretty hardcore. Anyway, I'm enjoying it, and as long as you can handle some pretty dark themes and incredibly twisted characters then its probably up your alley too!
- ZeusifiedRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overview
Fast-paced and full of the unexpected, Final Boss Best Friends is the gritty story of Zoe's will to survive in a relentlessly unfair post-apocalyptic world. At first, Zoe is out for revenge: she drops everything to hunt down the man that betrayed her. That search for vengeance? It's quickly interrupted. The System hits and it lashes out. It's vindictive, harsh, and while it takes "No" as an answer, it responds with brutality.
I continue to read Final Boss Best Friends because it's a solid story with engaging prose. Check it out if you're looking for a LitRPG progression story with a strong female lead and a lot of darkness beneath the surface.
Style
- POV: The POV is a close 3rd person, centered around Zoe. We get a good look at Zoe's thoughts and feelings throughout the story.
- Tone: The tone is light-hearted at times (when humor is needed) and dark at others (engaging monsters, dealing with injuries).
- Prose: The prose of Final Boss Best Friends is one of its best qualities. The author has a talent for description, and it shows in how monsters (and their abilities) are characterized. Additionally, the author does an excellent job varying sentence structure/length to mirror the tension/action of a scene.
- Voice: The author's voice is incredibly fitting, especially in how he describes the world around Zoe. While the story is told from a 3rd person POV, I still feel as if I'm seeing the world as Zoe sees it. It's evident that Zoe has had her life derailed and is barely hanging on. Yet, Zoe is someone that refuses to give in. Her will to survive carries her forward and, because of that, we get to see her grow and push the story forward with her.
- Dialogue: Dialogue is solid. The author does not use excessive tags, and Zoe's internal monologue flows directly into how she converses with other characters.
- Horror: There are some horror elements present in the story. Right now, these elements are present in the underlying tension surrounding the characters, - FuzzybunnyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Ok, 40-ish chapters in and I feel this tale is hitting it's stride.
The world is vivid and novel, with the characters doing things that are both believable and divergent from what you'd expect from horror tropes and a lot of LitRPGs. While there was some difficulty keeping track of the characters early on in the tale, each of them has settled into their own being at this point.
Looking forward to more.
