- luda305Royal Road★★★★ 4.0Feather has an interesting premise. In a xianxia-lite world, a dying man is offered the chance to become a guardian spirit to his daughter. It's an interesting variant on the familiar or fairy godmother story, being told from the perspective of the other, rather than the human. And it seems to start that way.
The actual story itself quickly devolves into something else entirely. On the one hand, I can't even summarize what that is in a single sentence because it's being pulled in several directions at once and it's not even clear if the "father spirit" or the "daughter" is the protagonist, one of several protagonists, or possibly even just a side character (we don't even get a POV from her until the double digits).
There's serious doubt about what the "daughter" is because she isn't his literal daughter. They have a strange relationship where they mostly ignore each other. They get swept up into some side adventure with a minor noble familiy and some adventurers. She starts to exhibit miraculous powers. There's a rebellion going on. And there's this extended sequence involving the crown princess and the bastard son and a (faked?) assassination.
Now, all of those have good merit as a concept, and they are largely well-executed (though how they all fit together is a complete mystery). The style is good and clear; grammar excellent, good flow, most of the characters are fairly distinct, etc.
As another aside, if the story really is meant to be multiple lead characters, than the synopsis needs to be entirely reworked because it's misleading in suggesting that the lead character is the spriit father or maybe the daughter.
