- longwindedone1Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0This review comes after reading the first four chapters of Familiar Magic. I apologize for any spoilers.
Story:
Let me start by saying that even before I started reading, I knew I was going to like this story. It has puns! This story is a nice mix of LitRPG, isekai, and progression fantasy. IN the story, Ethan Bishop finds himself transported to a realm called Nexum. He is armed with a box filled with magical stones that grant him skills. Nexum is filled with knights, magical beasts, and dimensional rifts. Eventually, he finds some knights who are battling a huge fire breathing beast and aids them.
Style:
The author manages the alternating between introspection, humor, and intense sequences pretty well (and that isn't always easy). The tone for this adventure is suspenseful, but there are some moments of humor that lighten Ethan’s journey. The perspective follows Ethan in third person.
Grammar:
I didn't notice any grammatical issues, but I'm listen to all of my RR books on the app. No complaints in this category for me.
Characters: Ethan is well done. We get a taste of some of his medical background, which doesn't really happen much in the isekai that I have read. Valanor (who I immediately liked because his name appears to be a tribute to Tolkien) is a nice counter character (personality wise) to Ethan. There is also Toby (Valanor's familiar), a referenced mysterious woman in silver that gave Ethan the box, Prince Calevaro, and Dean (Ethan's older brother- only appearing in memories).
Come here for the survival elements, the magic, and the adventure. Come here for the fresh takes on the MC and how he acquires skills. Come here for awesomeness. 5/5 - CoJoGoRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0This is a story that hooks you quickly, explains itself and the setting well, and rolls forward perfectly with plot and progression. I can't wait to read more.
Style:
Top marks - the descriptions are visceral and so full. From the vistas in the opening chapter to the descriptions of tunnels or caves, I know where I am and have a clear vision of the scenery in the story. The author drips humor into their writing, and in general just does a great job of painting vivid action and scenes with their writing.
Story:
The first chapter is a magnificent blend of hook, exposition, and development. What follows is also a wonderfully paced set of scenes - including really well done action. There's very obvious threads to pull for the story, and at CH4 you really start to see where the MC's powers and interactions with the world is going to evolve.
Grammar:
Everything is well edited. There are some minor bits, but this is a very technically strong story so far.
Character:
Ethan is a well-introduced and well-explained character, even only 4 chapters in. The opener really does a great job of conveying who the MC is, information about his relationships, and his interactions with / thoughts on the world around him in a straightforward and subtle way. The other characters so far have been interesting, and it feels like there's depth waiting to be explored. I generally wouldn't do a full five stars for character this early in a story but the author has shown a great ability to build personality with the MC that I expect to see applied to other people. - EldenMonkeyRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0In short this story is great. With the 24 chapters that are up at the point of this review, I have found myself invested in the MC and the side characters. The worldbuilding has been pretty good so far with more being slowly unveiled. As for the litrpg elements, it is kind of like HWFWM in that it is based on the soul but this story uses familiars that are investing and esay to like. Overall, I would highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys stories with familiars or who like HWFWM.
- Karl_D_SmithRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0From what I've read so far, this webnovel promises to be a really compelling story with plenty of suspense to keep me engaged. The prose is really smooth and exciting, short where it needs to be short, and long where it needs to be long, while also being very vivid and descriptive; I was never lost in the paragraphs, I always knew what the MC was doing while also being aware of where they were and what was around them.
Style
As a progression fantasy, keeping in mind that I've only read a short few at this point in my own journey, it really stands out to me. The way the system is implemented in this setting is both interesting and fresh-feeling, and I love the way the MC's own abilities and skills come into reflection with the in-game elements present in the narrative. It feels a little different in the way it's presented, and I'm excited to see how that develops later in the story.
Story
There's great pacing in these first few chapters, as well. It's never boring, even in the quieter moments, and it always feels like the MC (Ethan) is up against it; struggling from one thing to the next while building up the suspense.
Grammar
I, personally, didn't spot many mistakes, and if there are any, then they're not very intrusive to the reading experience.
Character
There is plenty to say about character on this one. There is plenty of intrigue, especially concerning their relationship with their brother, and piles of personality. The character is funny and also methodical in their attitude, which I think is a perfect combination for the kind of story the author is going for here, and I appreciate the pop culture references they make (like, for example, Half-Life).
I'm excited to read more, and I can't wait to a quieter moment after my next few reads to continue this story. - R. C. VettaRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Something that always grips me about stories is a good magic system. This story delivers. Currently, there is much we still do not know as the main character is still learning, but I am getting some He Who Fights with Monsters vibes with a dash of WoW Beast Master.
The hinted at variety of abilities, familiars, manifestings and affinities lead me to believe there is going to be room for truly unique power sets. Additionally, the verity of familiars show already hint at them being both ubiquitous yet incredibly powerful when used in specific combinations.
The over all style of the text is very casual. The author makes many references to real life and contemporary pop culture. There are times when that can feel a little out of place, but you get used to it as a quirk of the text and character.
The grammar was excellent and made for an easy reading experience. The story is fairly new so there are occasional misspellings, but nothing egregious or really worth mentioning if this wasn't a review.
This is a thrown to the wolves style of rift fantasy as the main character is dropped right into the thick of it not once , but twice. Two portals for the price of one! There is a lot of lore that is unknown so far so in that regard the story is a bit of a slow burn. Much of the main plot doesn't kick in until around chapter 7 and 8, but the magic system was enough to keep me interested while that part was building.
The character comes in and is immediately made a healer, which is a nice touch. He takes to the new world and system rapidly and when given the opportunity dives right into the fray. This guy has hero of the ages written all over him and it would not surprise me to see him outpace those around him in a dozen chapters.
I highly recommend this book if you are a fan of badass magic-ed up Isekai main characters and incredible magic systems that seem to have endless possibilities! - Recon1342Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I was a bit bored today after having caught up with my follow list. As I’ve not read any familiar-based stories, I decided to give this one a try.
It has thus far been full of exactly the type of craziness that you’d expect from being dropped into another world- miscommunications, lack f knowledge, and a populace that is used to a far different type of ordinary than the MC.
Rollicking good fun so far, and as I came to the latest chapter, I found myself disappointed that I could not read on.
Read it. You won’t regret it. - SchusfusterRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0When I caught up, which is how I know it's good.
Systemically similar to "He Who Fights With Monsters", but with Familiars instead of Essences.
A very clever, focused, driven, multifaceted protagonist, and a cast of multidimensional supporting characters.
This is really good stuff. I hope Ethan lives so I get more story. :p - armedleosRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I like how the story drops us right in the middle of his journey and gradually fills in what happened through clever bits of backtracking, like the MC’s thoughts and his interactions with others. The way the author describes characters is also done well, carefully sprinkling in details across the chapters rather than all at once.
The banter in the first three chapters is a great touch too. Usually, this would throw me off since it can feel comically detached from the storyline, but here, it’s well-executed and flows naturally. The MC being a doctor is also a nice detail. Since I watch hospital/rescue shows with my partner, I could relate to his experiences—the assessments, triage, and the way he realizes he almost missed a “patient” that needs urgent attention all feel accurate. The MC’s medical skills come from his own expertise, and they’re even heightened now thanks to a system he can access.
Yes, this is a LitRPG with a system that gives him skill info and helps him along his journey one step at a time. I liked how the language barrier is handled too, where he uses a special stone or rune to understand the language by absorbing it into his body—unique and refreshing! The author’s description of fights and scenes is well-done, with sensory details that pull you in like you’re there. I didn’t notice any grammar issues that would disrupt the flow.
I’m a slow reader, but I’ll definitely be checking out the next chapters! Overall, a solid start with so much more to uncover as the story progresses. - Apollo149Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0Worth a read just for this line!
“Dr. Ethan Bishop, born-again optimist, fell off the mountain.”
This has to be one of the best lines I have read all week!
General Story so far! Monsters become Familiars (which is always a fun idea! There is always one person in my D&D groups that wants to love on all the monsters), bestowing incredible magical abilities...However…Not so easy for Ethan Bishop, he ends up with a Dimension Devourer, the Royal Guardian, and one so forbidden that it cannot be mentioned. He is a healer and a heretic. An Assassin with brilliant, explosive abilities, and a guy who has no choice but take the most perilous and unattainable roads. I get the vibe that Ethan must utilize each trick, joke, and scrap of strength he can muster.
Now for the review: I'm very happy with how wonderful the starting chapters are. Typically, I find that the initial chapters of many books in this genre are either uninteresting or a massive dump of information that you must endure before the real plot begins. But, no, not this one! This is a narrative that rapidly pulls you in, clearly explains itself and the environment, and moves forward with a flawless storyline and progression. I cannot wait to read more.
Overall, I enjoy the writer's style. No problems with grammar for me. I found it easy to read and follow. I have nothing bad to say, I look forward to the next bit. - bewareoftoadsRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5Overall: Story is off to a great start! So far, the skills the MC Ethan has gotten are pretty well-balanced- not too OP, but with lots of interesting applications and ways to grow. The fact that Ethan is a healer makes the story unique compared to other isekai fantasy litrpgs. One thing I really like is that Ethan's old life translates into his new one- he gets climbing and healing powers because of his old life. Also the story is pretty funny and includes references to spiderman and stuff which make it very relatable.
Style: Very funny. Action and humor are well-balanced. The real world references are definitely a bonus.
Story: Started a little slow, but picks up very nicely in chapter 2. Healer MC + familiars who fight is such an interesting concept, and I'm excited to see where the story goes. The worldbuilding is solid, and in a few short chapters we've gotten a good idea of the scope of the world. The worlds all feel like they have a history from before the MC, which is good to see, and the magic system feels well-established. The progression of the MC with his familiars and healing definitely promises to be exciting.
Grammar: No mistakes that I could find.
Character: I found him a little strange at the beginning, but Ethan is a very relatable, funny MC. His powers are also super cool which helps. The other characters feel pretty distinct, and they have logical motivations- protecting their kingdom, being loyal to their prince- which make the world immersive.
