Description
James had always dreamed of inheriting his father’s throne. And then that dream turned into a nightmare.
Within the span of a decade the prosperous Duchy was been betrayed, invaded and pillaged. His father, the Duke, is dead, alongside a million of the finest sailors and marines the galaxy had ever seen.
And he…is sentenced to exile.
The last loyalists of the Dynasty stand by him. A mismatched flotilla of ragged warships and weathered freighters, turned away from civilized space and thrust into the deep end as the unwilling vanguard of human expansion.
Awakening in a universe wholly different to the one he left, James sees that humanity has forgotten the Akrites name.
Time to remind them.

- skrublordRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Ok to start off, some of the backstory of the old empire early on isn’t super fleshed out but given the nature of the story much of it doesn’t really need to be as they jump location and time forward to the point of making much worldbuilding in the old world not very relevant. I still wish we had more about why the Akritans ruling family are the way they are in terms of ruling or how they are maintaining technological development while seemingly the rest of humanity is stagnating, however it’s not immensely problematic.
The people feel like people in the story so far and have reasons to behave the way they are and none of their decisions feel super forced for the plot to move forwards as the sole driving factor. The next thing I absolutely loved about this story it conveys what needs to be conveyed without 5 chapters and 10 paragraphs of needless text, some stories have 2 characters debating the pH content of soil and if it could grow xy and z crops for multiple paragraphs or chapters this one doesn’t do that but still conveys that people are concerned about the topic and convey that in a concise way. All of this is to say the pacing is good and the story isn't primarily composed of fluff.
There are a rare typo here and there but not problematically so, in the 24 chapters there were only three I noticed. None of which were so problematic you could not discern what the intent was.
All in all a great sci-fi kingdom building story so far and am looking forwards to where it goes moving forwards as things continue rolling. - XCoyKoiXRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Overall: Excellent story! It scratches EVERY itch I’ve had for a space opera for quite some time. It feels similar to reading a Halo novel more focused on the command aspect(think UNSC FleetCom) while drawing from settings such as StarSector. It’s an ode to what I love about sci-fi, space operas, and empire building. Though the space opera aspect definitely takes a back seat for most of the first few chapters.
Style: Excellent style. I love the authors use of fine detail to add depth to a scene. They manage to strike while the iron is hot, maintaining a perfect balance of not-over explanation and not-under explanation. All in all, a perfect brew of both.
Story: The plot is a mix of consistent progression and introduction of side characters that play a smaller role. It allows the reader to develop a broad and detailed understanding of the main faction. I’d describe the story as painting a very succinct, detailed picture and still not giving too much away. There is always a plot thread for you to pull on or a conflict for you to wonder about which absolutely makes reading it a joy.
Characters: To build upon my previous point I really appreciate the introduction of side characters. They always serve a purpose to further the plot and the progression of their character development is at such a rate that it is satisfying to eventually see how it ties into the main storyline.(Run-on sentence of all-time) Most, and I do mean most, are very well fleshed out. It is very satisfying to see how the author uses side characters to breakup the speed of the story and make the progression of the main faction feel earned, rather than given. However, I do feel the sudden introduction of a faction in Chapter 24 could’ve been more fleshed-out. It was initially hard to follow along and keep track of the multiple factions and characters introduced in that chapter. I think that it would’ve been easier to understand the chapter by expounding on the relationships between the factions and wher - CyberSorceressRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0As a huge fan of space opera, I often find it challenging to discover a truly compelling science fiction story on RoyalRoad. However, Exiled to the Future by Ian Jager has been a breath of fresh air. The world-building is exceptional, detailed without relying on cumbersome walls of text that disrupt the flow of the narrative.
What truly sets this story apart is its blend of sci-fi and kingdom-building elements, a combination I’ve been searching for years to read. It’s a rare gem in the genre, and one that I wholeheartedly recommend. For me, this is an easy 10/10. - EpsilonRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Finding a good space opera is hard but the plot is okay but the intro needs some work as in background why people are do loyal to this duke. furthermore, explanations on the polities, and why and how akritians are superior technologically even though imperium has stagnated. But im being harsh i like the plot and the some of the other attention to detail.
- Lapochka8Royal Road★★★★★ 5.0I was scrolling through sci-fi esque novels on royal road and found a complete drought.
outside of the most notable one, first contact/nova wars by Ralts Bloodthorne, there was great lack of any others.
that is until i stumbled across this novel.
i haven’t seen any grammatical errors, and the world building is surprisingly intricate and in depth. The sci-fi actually makes sense, the concepts are esoteric, but not so far out there it’s hard to follow along with. The basic premise behind it is something that to me seems unique as well.
there’s not a lot of kingdom builder esque novels like this based in space. At least not any that i can remember reading off the top of my head that have captured my attention for as long as this one has.
the character building is good as well. The characters that have been introduced so far feel very lifelike, something that i as someone that has tried writing know is very hard to do. So huge props to Ian Jager for their skills in that department.
Any and all FOV switches that happen are 1) not overly frequent, and 2) do not detach from the story in any way. If anything they just expand the world more.
Overall, i give it a 10/10.
it’s a really good story, a really talented author, and it definitely deserves to be on top of rising stars, and within the top 100 ongoing novels if it isn’t already.
like i said, it’s surprisingly refreshing AND well put together.
pardon any capitalization mistakes, i wrote this on my phone. (I don’t usually write reviews so for me to write one does mean a lot.) - Phase WhaleRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Love the sci Fi vibe. Hope you can use more inspiration from the StarSector, specially it's story line. Hope you add the threat, the unknown, the remnant and redacted. Also add the other factions such as tri tech, the church, the league and independents.
Additionally, add some exploration stuff such discovery of an abandoned research stations, weapon caches, supply caches, cryogenic status and many more. - SininenRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0Well written scifi stories are rare, ones in space even rarer and colony building into ... hopefully... a bright future even rarer still.
Characters seem interesting and do not have mysterious powers to make them untouchable. I can believe that they might have setbacks or even be defeated if things go too far wrong.
Story has been advancing at a good pace, enough to keep me interested even reading it a chapter at a time.
Try it, I don't think you will regret it. - The_TripointRoyal Road★★★★★ 5.0I've beta-read this one till around the twentieth chapter, and I must say, going far, it's a very good story.
Space Opera stories are one of my favorites, and this one is technically an isekai story (lul) as a twist. But...in space.
Style:
I like the style of Jager's writing. It's pretty straightforward, but with a decent variety that it still reads with enough eloquence. Moreover, I generally like the style of the story's tones/themes. Sci-fi Kingdom Building is pretty epic, and the story exudes a sort of "light in the darkness" style of storytelling about the MCs faction versus the technologically inferior and usually backward foes of his Duchy.
Story:
The story mainly follows James of the Akritan Dynasty, and the basic premise is that he and the remnants of his Duchy are flung in the future. The story is about him and his nation essentially trying their best to rebuild in a hostile environment. Lots of politicking, diplomacy, etc, and of course, the most essential part of space operas: space battles.
Grammar:
I'm not a strong judge of the grammar of any story ever that isn't published professionally on Amazon, so all that matters to me when it comes to web serials is readability. I believe there are mistakes or typos here and there, but none that severely affect the flow of a reading session.
Characters:
There are a lot of characters in this story, but the main focal point is the MC, which I believe matters the most. He's ambitious, competent, and most of all, benevolent. The characters that surround him also seem competent, which I believe is the only way for an extremely small faction to survive and thrive. - DraynoRoyal Road★★★★★ 4.5The setting is fun and the conflicts are growing in scale really well!
I really enjoy the balance between the dynasty's good morals but also underhanded public manipulation and indoctrination. Seeing how the wars have actually changed them as a people.
The little interlude stories are fun and keep building on the experiences around the worlds!
Some more care could be taken to fix spelling errors and such but it's not so bad to stop me wanting more chapters quickly XD
Thank you author for the work you've put into this story, well worth the read. - kkmeRoyal Road★★★★ 4.0Even though the story is good, I'm not completely hooked.
By chapter 10 there's a cast of 50 named characters and the pov switches often. Time marches on without pity and while that gives the story a sense of grandeur, it makes the individuals within feel small.
I'm never really excited about the next chapter, because it could be about what Olaf, the ice cream salesman, thinks about his cousin in the navy after the latest news.
I suggest you give it a chance, but be prepared for a lack of focus on a small cast.
